FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

My dear people,

On this, our Independence Day weekend, we expect to host many visitors at our Masses. We welcome them all. To be honest, I’d have to admit that a few of our visitors can raise the blood pressure. I mean people like those who receive Holy Communion, then walk out the door. (Where DO they come from?) I liken them to houseguests who might finish their meals, walk out and go home leaving everyone else sitting around the table. But today I want to salute the great majority of our visitors: those families who may be away from home, on vacation, taking a break from the stresses of daily life, and still make sure to remember God, to attend Mass faithfully. I don’t doubt that there might have been some grumbling and moaning from children today about “Why do we have to go to Mass; we’re on vacation…” But here you are, faithfully present to offer the Sacrifice of the Mass. God bless you all.

Many parishioners have already heard about the transfer of Father Antony from Stella Maris. He and I have expected this for some time as some of you have known. Some three years for a parochial vicar is longer than usual and we knew this was coming. Finally, it is official. Effective July 15, Father Antony will be leaving us to serve as Administrator of the parish in Kingstree, S.C. on a temporary basis. The proximity of Kingstree may or may not allow him to continue some of his research at the Medical University of South Carolina. In his time among us, Father Antony has shown his true pastoral instincts, having come to know many people much better than I do despite my 28 years here. His genuine love of the Priesthood and God’s people will serve him well as he takes up parish leadership. Please plan to stop by our Hall next Sunday after the 9:30 A.M. Masses for light refreshments and to thank Father Antony for his time among us and to wish him well. Someone recently asked what might be a good gift for Father Antony, something he might need or want. Not to be crass, but I very frankly told him: cash. All priests have their pet projects or needs, and many of our international priests are supporting institutions and family back home. Thank you, Father Antony, for your devoted service, kindness, friendliness and some laughs along the way.

I am pleased to report that also effective July 15, Father David Michael will take up his assignment as parochial vicar at Stella Maris. Those who have been around here for a while will remember his time with us some fifteen years ago. He was the first parochial vicar named here in some 30+ years after Mt. Pleasant was removed from our territory and our mission of Christ Our King became a parish in its own right. Sitting out on the front porch talking to Father tonight, I was reminded of our old days on the porch of the former rectory. We talked about this column and how to describe the news of his appointment. It’s very simple, we decided. He is happy to be here and I am happy to have him.

Creek report: the flounder are in but the new minimum length of 15” is breaking our hearts. Crabs are in the creek too, but still small. August should yield a great harvest of the creek’s finest offering: Carolina blue crab.

PARISH NEWS AND ACTIVITIES

UPDATING PARISH “SICK LIST”

Please note: We are going to be updating our list of people who are on our “sick list” on a monthly basis. Please let us know if someone should remain on the list by calling the office at 843-883-3108.

MIDDLE STREET CONSTRUCTION PROJECT

The first segment of a sewer main extension project for Sullivan’s Island will begin Monday July 8th. It is anticipated to take a total of three weeks to complete. Expect some moderate traffic congestion in this area. Middle Street WILL REMAIN OPEN on July 4th, but WILL BE completely closed for two days during the project (days not specified) as the new sewer crosses Middle Street at the fire station.

FROM THE BOOKKEEPER Envelopes

Building Fund: While we are not running a fund raising drive, we do have a building fund that you may want to contribute to. If so, please mark the envelope AND the check memo with “Building Fund.” Please do NOT mix parish, second collection, and building fund donations in one check or one envelope. This will be a tremendous help to those counting!

For those parishioners who have put their mail on a temporary hold, please be aware that the Post Office does NOT hold your parishioner donation envelope packets. They are returned to us and we, in turn, place them in the rear of the Church to be picked up. Please check to see if your packet might be there. Any questions, please call the parish office.

Please note: if you are attending Stella Maris but not receiving envelopes, then you are not registered. Please call the Parish Office during regular hours at 843-883-3108 for information about joining the parish.

Please assure them that our services are confidential, and that we will not share their information with anyone they did not authorize us to contact, including friends who might have referred them. If we cannot help them directly, we will search our database of community and state resources to see what is available for them. The person needing help must call us directly; we cannot call anyone who hasn’t called us first.
