Steel solutions for economy housing in Romania
A Partnership projectIn April 2008, ArcelorMittal Foundation and NGO Habitat for Humanity
signed a partnership agreement to build houses for people in need,
in countries where both ArcelorMittal and Habitat for Humanity
are present.
The partnership includes direct contributions and volunteer work
from ArcelorMittal employees. It also aims at offering steel-based
solutions for safe, high-quality housing meeting Habitat requirements
at low costs. ‘Casa Buna’ (Good House) is a concept response for
houses in Romania, first implemented in Moinesti, near Comanesti.

The Casa Buna Challenge Offer comfortable housing tobudget-constrained Romanian families
Habitat for Humanity Construction Principles :
Simple, Decent, Affordable. Adequate for climatic & seismic conditions in Romania
. Cost-competitive with traditional, timber frame construction
. Energy-efficient : in continental climate with cold winters and hot
summers, combined with raising cost of energy, heating bills must
be affordable to budget constrained families
. All technical approvals required by local authorities
Designed for People. Satisfy beneficiary families : Each family buys and builds their own
home with non- profit mortgages and ‘sweat equity’ volunteer hours
. Adapt to Habitat for Humanity architectural design in each specific
case
. Offer usage flexibility - e.g. internal partitioning, external enveloppe
aspect
. Volunteer-friendly design - every home is mostly built by
non-professional volunteers
Habitat program design in Moinesti
. Eight housing blocks, totalling 32 individual units
at 60sq.m each
. One family in each «corner», on two levels with
internal staircase

Light Steel Frame StructuresLight steel framing is made of cold-formed steel profiles produced
by roll forming. It is now used successfully for housing in many
countries.
Advantages include :
. a dimensionnally stable, consistent quality, reliable material
. resistant to natural pressures including termites, hurricanes,
earthquakes
. light structures, hence reduced foundations
. dry and clean construction works, reduced construction waste,
quick erection
v100% recyclable material
. better control of thermal and acoustical performance, due to
precise workshop preparation
. roll-forming technology easily transferable to local
entrepreneurs
Steel Roofing SystemsSteel roofing is commonplace in Romania.
ArcelorMittal Construction Romania offers a wide range of
roofing products such as steel tiles, roof decks, roofing panels
and integrated rain evacuation systems.
Flexible Enveloppe SolutionsSteel framing allows various wall solutions to meet any specific requirements as to insulation,
costs, and aesthetics. Examples include :
. plasterboard interior walls, insulation, OSB wood panels, external finish layer
. same concept, with steel cladding panels instead of OSB
. pre-fabricated steel+insulation sandwich panels
Fully engineered designCasa Buna design will be fully modeled for structural, seismic and thermal behavior - in full agreement with
European standards. In addition , Casa Buna conforms to romanian national application codes.
Steel-based Solutions An effective response
Our commitment to the world around us extends beyond
the bottom line, to include the people in which we invest,
the communities we support and the world in which we operate.
In line with these values, we are proud to partner with Habitat
for Humanity in their efforts to fight poverty housing around the globe.
We are eager to share our technical and design capabilities to offer
comfortable, energy efficient and low-cost housing solutions.
