Dear Schwalbe Partner!

I personally do not think that

weather is a valid reason to explain

the current, growing market trend.

However, such an unusually long

and hard winter in many parts of

the world will have an effect upon

our traditionally seasonal industry

during the coming main selling

months. The severe winter will un-

doubtedly have caused a ‘logjam’

requiring an amount of catch-up

– a giant logistical challenge for

most players in the market.

But if we look beyond the

weather factor and concentrate

upon social developments then the

prospects immediately become

clearer and much brighter!

At the „vivavelo“ bicycle con-

gress, which took place this spring

in Berlin, two things became obvi-

ous. Firstly: In many countries there

has been a noticeable increase in

cycling and – this is a first – politici-

ans have taken note! Secondly: The

bicycle industry is self-confidently

making itself heard. And there are

several reasons to believe that

things can only get much, much

better.

I wish you

a successful season ahead.

Industry experts predict a great future for E-bikes, comparable to the mountain bike

boom of 20 years ago. Many of the new pedelecs run on Schwalbe tires – for example,

the Energizer that has been specifically designed for E-bikes.

Schaer. Biketec has ‘electrified’every type of bike, so all kinds ofcyclists can adopt it. Kurt Schaervoiced his optimism about anelectric future: “In years to comeE-bikes will have a significantinfluence on everyday and leisu-re activities worldwide, becausewe are facing dramatic changesin short-distance travel options.”

Light weight

commuting bike

E-bikes produced by Giant aresuitable for all age-groups.Robust trekking frames are thebasis of the “Freedom” touringbike and the “Express”, a lightweight commuting bike. “Ridersof these models are younger and more athletic. They want to

ride to work, but do not want to get sweaty and theyoften ride without resorting to motor power”, saidProduct Manager, Steffen Barkhau. Giant have de-signed their very latest models “Comfort” and “Ele-gance” for older cyclists. The seating position of the“Elegance” is interesting: The seat tube is angledmore steeply than is usual, so that when stationary, the rider can easily reach the ground with both feet.“These hybrid types are presently subject to veryhigh demand,” said Steffen Barkhau. Giant E-bikesrun on Schwalbe Energizer, which received a speedapproval rating for up to 50 kph from the GermanTÜV organization.

Steady breeze rather

than blustery storm

Manufacturer Riese and Müller (Germany) fitsvarious Schwalbe models. The recently introduced“Delite HS” (High Speed) uses Marathon Supreme, but due to its powerful performance at present it isnot considered a ‘bicycle’ in relation to the regula-tions of many countries. “Nobody at Eurobike pre-sented a similar quality E-bike with such a powerful500 watt motor that was quite like the Delite,” saidproduct manager Peter Horsch. His target market:Young and young at heart competitive riders. As aconsequence Reise and Müller consider its ‘lightningbolt’ a good alternative to the car as a mode of dailytransport. According to Horsch, the response of theretail trade at Eurobike was “Euphoric”. The “Delite”also comes without the HS suffix – available with a250-watt motor which consequently does not requiretype approval.

Schwalbe CEO Frank Bohle views the newvarieties of E-bikes as a great addition for bicycledealers. “A pedelec is not a cheap product. Massmerchants and on-line suppliers cannot credibly sellsuch a complicated machine and certainly cannotoffer after-sales service, so dealers remain the solecompetent and capable source, because only a lot ofadvice and service can make an E-bike buyer a happycustomer.”

Energizer: Even more tailwind

Whether Energizer or Marathon: E-bikes fitted withSchwalbe run safely. Schwalbe designed the newEnergizer specifically to suit the needs of E-bikes,where these special tires are required to withstandhigher pressures, faster constant speeds and heavierloading. By the summer of 2009 Energizer had alrea-dy gained approval from the German testing house,TÜV, for use on faster, 50 kph, pedelecs. In additionto its robust structure Energizer offers even moreadvantages for electrical power-assisted cycling: Itrolls very easily, thanks to special compounds, andthe Liteskin sidewall saves weight – both featureswhich prolong battery life. Also, puncture resistanceplays a significant role, because the wheel assemblyof electric bicycles is much more complex and alsodifficult to disassemble than with “normal” bikes. Soa Kevlar Guard under the tread provides a high levelof protection.

one of the most

powerful 500 watt

E-bikes.

What are the benefits of barcoding tires?

The barcoding system improves and facilitates quali-ty assurance. In the case of defective lots, recalls ofcoded tires can be more easily initiated. When hand-ling claims made under the warranty and/or guaran-tee, it is much easier to establish causes in thereduction of quality.

Why is removing the code prohibited?

The barcode is an integral part of the product. Re-moving it calls for considerable wilful mechanicalforce and the tire not only looks worn, but is alsodamaged as a result! The carcass sustains damageand the surface becomes porous which presents asafety hazard. Tires damaged in this way can causeserious accidents, for which the seller of the tire tothe consumer is liable. It is also conceivable that this

could be deemed a criminal offence on the groundsof attempted grievous bodily harm. After all, the partyresponsible for the removal of the barcode knowinglyaccepts the safety risk.

Furthermore, removing the barcode constitutesa trademark infringement which is likewise an offenceliable to punishment. Schwalbe has the right to ex-pect its merchandise to be sold in its original state.

It goes without saying that Schwalbe will not assumeany guarantee or warranty for tires where the bar-code has been removed.

How can bicycle dealers protect themselves against

such claims?

By selling only originally packed merchandise with anintact barcode and a full set of operating and fittinginstructions.

Can dealers return tires showing a damaged code?

Yes, that’s covered by the warranty. The dealer is ent-itled to return the merchandise to the supplier fromwhom it was purchased. Anyone selling merchandisethat has been tampered with forgoes the right to claimunder the warranty and is then personally liable. Adealer would therefore be wise not to take this risk.

What are the consequences of removing

the code?

We file an official complaint. After all, it is in thepublic’s interest for the safety of bicycle tires to beguaranteed. Moreover, Schwalbe can prohibit a thirdparty from selling the tires if the condition of themerchandise has been impaired in this way subse-quent to having been placed on the market.

Guarantee only for

barcoded merchandise Since the summer of 2009 individual EAN codes have been

vulcanized into all Schwalbe Folding, Downhill and Marathon

tires. The first tires with damaged codes have now emerged

on the market. Schwalbe Profile has been talking to Dr.

Verena Hoene, a lawyer specializing in intellectual and in-

dustrial property rights in the Commercial Law Practice

Heuking Kühn Lüer Wojtek in Cologne (Germany), to find out

what consequences this could have for the bicycle trade.

TECHNOLOGY

Probably no other tire in the world has as many miles on the clock as the Marathon. Extreme

tourers and circumnavigators trust the legendary durability of the Marathon XR and its successors

– Marathon Dureme and Extreme.

HD Ceramic Guard: Patented puncture protection – thefibers of the protective belt are more densely woven thanany other material used in cycle tire technology. “Onlythen it is possible to ensure that, even with such a verylight tire, it has a high level of safety,” said Holger Jahn,Schwalbe Technical Director. Extra benefit: The protectionbelt is coated with ceramic particles. So small fragmentsthat lodge in the tire and could eventually migrate throughit are prevented by the ceramic particles, as they are har-der than glass. SnakeSkin: Much lighter than a rubber-coated sidewall, but just as durable, it protects the tire from sharpstones and broken glass. Schwalbe Double Defensemeans double the safety level provided by the HD Cera-mic Guard and SnakeSkin sidewall. Light weight: Because of its technically demanding and sophisticated construction, the Marathon Dureme isexceptionally light (from 475 grams as folding tire) andalso extremely robust.

Hi-tech growth for the Marathon family

The new Marathon Dureme offers riders the very latest in tire technology: “It is an everyday and trekking tire forcyclists who demand only the very latest materials”, saidSchwalbe Product Manager Carsten Zahn. Its classic, versatile tread is at home on tracks, yet runs so smooth-ly on the road.

Schwalbe designed this tire within its exclusiveEvolution Line. ”In this series, we combined all of ourskills. Riders notice the finely tuned tire technology, everything is thought through, with not an ounce too much”. The Marathon Dureme has the following Evolu-tion features: Triple Nano Compound: Three rubber compoundscombined with nano-particles which bring together theseemingly contradictory characteristics of grip, easy roll-ing and durability. The three mixtures are so arrangedthat they act exactly where each is needed: Grip on thetire shoulders, hardwearing in the tread center with, beneath, an extremely light rolling compound.

All Marathons at a glance

In order to simplify tire choice: The Plus series is for people who place a high

importance on protection and mileage. If speed is a priority, Marathon Racer and

Cross are the leaders. The Evolution line is the balanced answer to both.

The Marathon Dureme fills a gap in Schwalbe’s MarathonEvolution product line between Marathon Supreme for cityuse and the Marathon Extreme for extreme touring.

Marathon Extreme for the Grand Tour

The Marathon Extreme has been available to hard-bittencircumnavigators since the beginning of 2009. Its treadhas already been subjected to long and arduous tours, expeditions and adventures. Yet despite these adversitiesit still rolls surprisingly easily. Riders have experienced its finely tuned Evolution Line technology for themselves – with its Triple Nano Compound, HD Ceramic Guard andSnakeSkin. Even its tread pattern looks adventurous, suit-able for expeditions and bad road conditions.

The Marathon Extreme has now been honored for itscombination of low weight and high puncture resistance:It received the ‘Milestone’ award from leading Germanspecialist magazine “Trekking Bike”.

Marathon Family:

Legendary long-distance runner

In 2009 the Marathon family consisted of nine tires (seechart left): Today, Marathon tires are among the best selling tires in Europe and are available in stores as farafield as the USA, Australia, South Africa, Russia andJapan.

It all began 25 years ago with a prototype, whenWolfgang Reiche (Germany) traveled from Katmandu toCape Town and onward to other remote corners of theworld. Reiche was diligent in his tire testing and withfeedback and in Thailand during the mid-eighties he heldin his hands the first ever Marathon. A revolution at thattime: The Marathon was the first high-quality tire pur-posely designed for everyday use and touring.

Even today it is one of very few cycle touring tiresasked for by name by specialist cycle dealers.

Ultremo HT:

Handmade tubular tire

The Ultremo HT has a special hidden feature: A latex tube – a must for true Italian design. It pro-vides additional puncture protection and elasticity.

Furthermore the Raceguard protection beltoffers a measure of puncture defence that is unusualfor tubulars. “Professionals deem there is simplynothing better than tubulars! They have undisputedlythe best run-flat performance, which is enormouslyimportantly for confidence when racing”, and, as a former pro racer himself, Lademann is well aware;“The new Ultremo HT tire is the best compromise

of puncture protection, comfort, gripand easy running that I have ever

ridden.”

New variants of

Rocket Ron and Nobby Nic

Further midseason products aretwo 29 inch sizes, which are verypopular in the USA. So two ofSchwalbe’s most popular MTBtires, Nobby Nic and RocketRon, are now also available as”Twentyniners“.

Rocket Ron looks absolu-tely stunning in its new ice whitecolour, but which is only a limi-ted edition.

All models are immediate-ly available. Article numbers:Rocket Ron 57-622 - 11600030,Nobby Nic 57-622 - 11600032.Rocket Ron 57-559 white -11600033.

The handmade Ultremo HT tubular tire is Schwalbe’s new midseason star. And there are

further products: Nobby Nic and Rocket Ron in 29 inch as well as a pure white Rocket Ron.

Rocket Ron now

in a Cyclo-Cross version

Cyclo-cross competition is becoming evermore popular and now there is RocketRon that is just right for the job in 700 x35C (35-622). This “Rocket” fulfills theexacting criteria for such a tire all at

once: Unbelievablygood grip, superlight 305 gramweight and tire tech-nology at its best – with a 127 EPI Evocarcass, Triple NanoCompound andbiting U-Blocks. It

also has a superb self-cleaning tread and evencomes in a ‘condensed’26” (47-559) version.

Airborne:

Fit for everyday life

The new, everyday, sporty wheelchair tireis called Airborne and it was developedby Schwalbe in cooperation with theUSA’s celebrated wheelchair stuntmanAaron Fotheringham. It was not onlydesigned for comfort when performing aback-flip landing, but also for everydaylife situations such as climbing curbs or negotiating steps. The 30 mm wideAirborne is more comfortable than astandard sports wheelchair tire and itslight weight and low rolling resistanceguarantee easy running – so the spor-ty Airborne is just at home in everyday use. Additionally the Airborne is the first

Schwalbewheelchairspecific tire to feature HD Ceramic-Guard – thatmakes forfewer punc-tures.

The Italian ProTour Team, Liquigas riders are tradi-tionalists. They will only ride on Italian designed andproven tubulars. Basta!

So the team mechanic had to find a way to con-vince the riders about a new tire: He secretly intro-duced the Ultremo HT tire during the Vuelta. But theend justified the means. On the three-week tour therewas not one single puncture and this convinced theItalian purists. “Now all they want to ride on is theUltremo HT”, reported Product Manager ChristianLademann of Schwalbe Race Support.

Italian style manufactoring

The strength of the Ultremo HT lies in combining traditional, Italian style manufacturing with high end materials. The tread, composed of triple nano compound, uses three diffe-rent rubber mixtures where they aremost needed: A hardwearing tread cen-tre, outstanding grip on the flanks andunder the tread a super-light rollingrubber. A hair-breath thin, latex layerprotects the side wall. In addition thereis a new diamond tread pattern – smallpyramids with flattened heads. This in-creases the contact area, thus improv-ing grip and longevity. Lademann add-ed: “The carcass material, a very finepolyester fibre, is more flexible than themore commonly used nylon. Its flexibilitymeans that the tire has a larger footprintand therefore more grip. Additionally ourtextile is more comfortable, faster andperforms much better on wet roads.”

Spectacular and exclusive: The

MAD Words for Sponsors

(Great Britain)(Great Britain) What a mad start it has been forEurope’s No 1 Mountainbike Stunt Team! In Ja-nuary M.A.D. traveled to Mumbai to perform at theprestigious Techfest, an event which attracts over50,000 students in one weekend. M.A.D. had thetask of opening the event with an evening perfor-mance in front of a 7,000 strong crowd. From In-dia onto Bahrain where the Team were invited toentertain crowds for the Australian V8 Champion-ships and GP2 at the prestigious Bahrain FormulaOne circuit. The guys mixed it with some top racingdrivers not to mention the glamorous girls fromGulf Air! Back with feet firmly in the UK, M.A.D. arethe title sponsors of the Sustrans virtual Bike race, which means the guys have been busy travelling upand down the UK attending schools giving works-hops and demo’s to the younger M.A.D fans. Allthis and the really MAD season has not even star-ted, it’s going to be another busy one!

Schwalbe sponsors Paralympics winner

(Germany)(Germany) Why Schwalbe sponsors a mono-ski racermay, at first glance, be a mystery? The answer though is quite simple: Because Martin Braxenthaler uses hiswheelchair in everyday life and in the summer is to befound using Schwalbe tires on his Handbike. The four-times Paralaympics competitor was the most successfulmono-ski racer in the 2006 Turin and 2010 Vancouverwinter games, where he won one Silver and three Goldmedals, but not only this, he is also the 2009/2010World Cup champion. Braxenthaler has been workingwith Schwalbe since 2004 and his ideas and experiencehave flowed into product development. “Schwalbe is oneof the pillars of my success”, said Braxenthaler. “It is apartnership that is very professional and achieves satis-fying results for both parties.” Schwalbe has been mak-ing wheelchair tires for almost 30 years and has beenactively engaged in disabled sports for seven years.

Ice Spiker Pro on test

(Italy)(Italy) January 2010: At an altitude of 1,267 m, betweenthe villages of Barcis and Piancavallo (Pordenone), agroup of young people rode for 13 km on a route thatrose 800 m to test the Ice Spiker Pro (26 x 2.10 Evo). Theriders faced a difficult challenge on a graded road cover-ed by snow compacted into ice, yet their bikes remainedlight and nimble after a fast getaway. The tire’s self-cleaning qualities were a surprise due to the tread com-pound and the reduced size of the spikes. On fresh snowthe tread of the Ice Spiker Pro remained clear and therewas simply no comparison to be made with other tiresused on the test. The descent was very fast and safe, without any fear of the icy bends, or loss of control evenunder sudden braking. Their conclusion: “No other prod-uct is as advanced as the Ice Spiker Pro, because with-out its unfaltering grip a fall would be guaranteed.” (www.freeborza.altervista.org/schwalbeicespikerpro.html)

The family owned company which employsfive people in its factory in Oulins, a rural area southwest of Paris, builds these vehicles for goods deliveryby companies. Eric Heuzey (50) and his wife Chris-tine started out in 1995 by renting some bicycles and“Rosalies”, but as they could not always find the rightvehicles, they decided to create their own. In 2001they began to specialize in producing only niche-market bikes and, in association with the deliverycompany “La Petite Reine”, to manufacture tricycles. In 2009, their production was around 100 vehicles, ofwhich 70 % were tricycles and the rest mostly “Rosa-lie”, or specifically disabled vehicles. “Their tricyclescan carry 150 kg of goods and can be adapted formany different purposes and are clearly an environ-mental solution to traffic congestion in big cities”,explained Pierre Dubruc, director of Bohle France. All of the company’s products are equipped withSchwalbe Marathon Plus Tour tires. Future plansinclude a coffee-trader providing employees who take an outside cigarette break with coffee, a refrige-rator-vehicle for “Danone”, and for JC Decaux a main-tenance-trike to care for the Velib‘ bicycles in Paris.(www.lovelo.com)

The event took place indowntown Seattle, Washington, and drew a recordnumber of 22,000 in its 22nd year of existence. TheSeattle Bicycle Expo caters mainly to the currentlybooming commuting culture which was a great fit for Schwalbe. “Many consumers and dealers cycledthrough the Schwalbe booth eager to pass along theirstories about how much they appreciate the quality, security and overall feel of Schwalbe tires”, sums upCeleste Steindl of Schwalbe North America. On theSchwalbe stand, Henry Horrocks and Jeff Clarksonwere busy educating the public about the productsand what tires were suited best for their needs. Forthe Schwalbe aficionado and keen onlooker the newUltremo HT tubular was on hand, for the first time, for the public to view. The first round of the National XC Points Series proved as always to bea fast and furious race on the relatively flat Sherwood Pines circuit inNottingham. However, despite all riders choosing to ride on Rocket Ron front and rear, it was not the usual winning start for Schwalbe, but some useful points were gained nonetheless. The Round the World record is under threat onceagain from Vincent Cox, who is using a regularroad racing bike rather than the traditional, heavi-ly laden touring bike that was used by current re-cord holder Mark Bowater. Unlike Mark, who usedthe new Marathon Extreme tires for his winningride in 2009, Vincent Cox will really be stretchingthe limits of the Schwalbe Durano 700 x 25C tires. His aim is to beat the record by at least a week.www.greatbikeride.com
