CHAPTER 5 - SUBTRACTION

THEME : HOUSES

Subtraction means take away or minus.

5- 2 = 3

Two stars are taken away from a group of five and three stars remain.

Properties of subtraction

1. Subtraction of a number from itself gives zero.

Eg: 4-4=0, 15-15=0

2. When you take away zero from any number, you get the same

number.

Eg: 7-0=7, 11-0=11

3. When you subtract ‘1’ from any number, you get the before

number.

Eg: 9-1=8, 13-1=12

The sign ‘__ ‘ is called minus sign

and it is used for subtraction. The number that we get by

subtracting two numbers is

called the difference.

Real Life Account of Arjun Singh Who won the Bravery Award

In July 2014, a tiger entered 16-year-old Arjun Singh’s house in Uttarakhand.

He showed extreme courage and fought it off, saving his mother’s life who had

fainted as soon as the tiger entered. Arjun went into a room and picked up a

sickle to fight the tiger. As it was too small to hit from a distance, Arjun

grabbed a stick and waved it towards the tiger. He did not stop until the

villagers reached there and the animal ran away on seeing the crowd. He

displayed outstanding bravery in fighting off a tiger to save his mother .His

deep affection with his mother got the courage to face the dangerous situation

and willing to sacrifice his life to save his beloved mother. For his courageous

and quick minded deed Arjun received Sanjay Chopra Bravery award for the

year 2016.
