Staying in the Boundary--2 John 9

• Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son (NKJV).

• Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God…(NASV).

• Anyone who goes beyond Christ's teaching and does not continue to follow only his teaching does not have God… (NCV).

Staying in the Boundary--2 John 9• Generally recognize the value of staying within

the boundaries:– Sports: football, baseball, etc. all have boundaries.– Property: landmarks, stakes…– Countries: rivers, creeks, lakes, fences…

• Spiritual boundary is determined by the Doctrine of Christ.

Have God Do Not Have God

Staying in the Boundary—Eph.

Have God Do Not Have GodThat at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world (2:12).

But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ (2:13).

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ (1:3).

Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness (1 Jn. 3:4).

What Does It Mean To Transgress?

Greek: “Proago” – To progress; to proceed, go forward: in a bad sense, to go further than is right or proper.

When one progresses or goes beyond what Christ has taught, he has not God.

What Is The Doctrine of Christ?

But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness (Rom. 6:17-18).

And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship… (Acts 2:42).

Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven (Matt 18:18).

Apostles Taught Christ’s Doctrine

But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come (Jn. 16:13).

And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance (Acts 2:4).

For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ (Gal. 1:11-12).

Doctrines of Men vs. Doctrine of Christ

And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men (Matt. 15:9).

Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons (1 Tim. 4:1).

Christ has only ONE doctrine!

One Lord, one faith, one baptism (Eph. 4:5).

1. Prayer to Mary, Saints2. Burning incense3. Lighting candles4. Counting beads5. Holy water6. Infant baptism7. Transubstantiation8. Saturday as day of

Respecting the Boundary of the Doctrine of Christ Explains:

Why the 10 Commandments are not authoritative in this age.

Part of the Law of Moses that Jesus fulfilled (Matt. 5:17-18).

Law nailed to the cross along with 10 commandments (Col. 2:14-17).

Served its purpose (Gal. 3:19-25).

He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him (Heb. 5:8-9).

Respecting the Boundary of the Doctrine of Christ Explains:

Why hearing, faith, confession, repentance, & baptism are preached as terms of salvation.

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God (Rom. 10:17).

He who believes and is baptized will be saved (Mk. 16:16).

With the mouth confession is made unto salvation (Rom. 10:10).

Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:38).

Respecting the Boundary of the Doctrine of Christ Explains:

Why the Lord’s Supper is being observed weekly.

And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers (Acts 2:42).

Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread… (Acts 20:7).

For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread…. In the same manner he also took the cup… (1 Cor. 11:23-25).

Respecting the Boundary of the Doctrine of Christ Explains:

Why there are musical instruments used in the worship.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord (Col. 3:16).

…I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding (1 Cor. 14:15).

Speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord (Eph. 5:19).

Respecting the Boundary of the Doctrine of Christ Explains:

Why there are no play rooms or eating rooms in the building.

But if anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, lest you come together for judgment. And the rest I will set in order when I come (1 Cor. 11:34).

What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and shame those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you in this? I do not praise you (1 Cor. 11:22).

The social gospel is not in the doctrine of Christ!

Respecting the Boundary of the Doctrine of Christ Explains:

Why we do not observe special holy days.

So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or Sabbaths (Col. 2:16).

You observe days and months and seasons and years. I am afraid for you, lest I have labored for you in vain (Gal. 4:10-11).

The observance of humanly devised holy days is not in the doctrine of Christ!
