Staying in the Boundary--2 John 9

• Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son (NKJV).

• Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God…(NASV).

• Anyone who goes beyond Christ's teaching and does not continue to follow only his teaching does not have God… (NCV).

the boundaries:– Sports: football, baseball, etc. all have boundaries.– Property: landmarks, stakes…– Countries: rivers, creeks, lakes, fences…

• Spiritual boundary is determined by the Doctrine of Christ.

Have God Do Not Have GodThat at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world (2:12).

But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ (2:13).

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ (1:3).

Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness (1 Jn. 3:4).

What Does It Mean To Transgress?

Greek: “Proago” – To progress; to proceed, go forward: in a bad sense, to go further than is right or proper.

When one progresses or goes beyond what Christ has taught, he has not God.

What Is The Doctrine of Christ?

But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness (Rom. 6:17-18).

And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship… (Acts 2:42).

Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven (Matt 18:18).

Apostles Taught Christ’s Doctrine

But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come (Jn. 16:13).

And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance (Acts 2:4).

For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ (Gal. 1:11-12).

Doctrines of Men vs. Doctrine of Christ

And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men (Matt. 15:9).

Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons (1 Tim. 4:1).

Christ has only ONE doctrine!

The social gospel is not in the doctrine of Christ!

So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or Sabbaths (Col. 2:16).

You observe days and months and seasons and years. I am afraid for you, lest I have labored for you in vain (Gal. 4:10-11).

The observance of humanly devised holy days is not in the doctrine of Christ!
