Friends of Acadia had an extraordinary 1999, a tribute as always to you, at whatever levelyou give.

Foremost, we received the largest-ever pledge to a Maine conservation organization, $5-million, from Honorary Trustees Ruth and Tris Colket.

It enabled us to mount a history-making project, ACADIA TRAILS FOREVER. The goal:$13 million — $4 million from Acadia National Park entry fees and $9 million from Friends. Theproject will rehabilitate the park’s 130-mile foot-trail system, restore some lost trails, create fivevillage connector paths, and privately endow the whole system in perpetuity.

On July 29, 1999, Interior Secretary Babbitt and National Park Service Director Bob Stantonhelped announce the project, at Jordan Pond House. They thanked the Colkets and congratu-lated this organization for its vision and leadership. Babbitt noted that Acadia will become thefirst park in 127 years of national park history to have an endowed trail system.

Friends co-conceived, co-developed and co-funded the Island Explorer propane-poweredbus system. It carried 142,000 riders, eliminated 42,000 vehicle trips, prevented the equivalent ofa 133-mile-long traffic jam, and offset 560 tons of noxious emissions.

We granted $350,000 to the park and community entities.Friends’ Acadia Youth Conservation Corps and our Ridge Runners helped the park tre-

mendously.Once again the park’s great professionals contributed mightily to the model public-private

partnership. They are well led by our colleagues Superintendent Paul Haertel and Deputy LenBobinchock.

Friends’ jet ski initiative resulted in municipal votes to ban the machines on Long, LittleLong, and Somes ponds.

We opened the new Acadian Ridge Trail, a public path on private conserved property, andbegan building the Great Meadow Loop, which accesses the park’s trails from the sidewalks ofBar Harbor.

Our fabulous volunteers donated 4,600 hours to trail and carriage road upkeep. Othersput on a non-pareil Benefit Gala that raised $270,000 for our conservation work.

Friends managed itself well — a balanced operating budget, the highest annual incomeever, doubled endowments, stingy fundraising costs (3 cents on the dollar over five years).

A hundred percent of the board and staff pledged both to ACADIA TRAILS FOREVER andto general operations. This symbolizes vigorous, thorough-going commitment.

It was a year of distinction marked by your generosity at all levels. Your love for thisbeautiful place is manifest.

We thank you most sincerely for your support and encourage you to bring others intoFriends of Acadia.

or Friends of Acadia, 1999 was a year of proud accomplishments.Friends and the National Park Service embarked on a $13-million part-nership, called ACADIA TRAILS FOREVER, to rehabilitate and endowthe 130-mile foot trail system of Acadia National Park.

ACADIA TRAILS FOREVER was initiated with Acadia National Parkto reverse the effects of millions of human footsteps and of the manynatural events that degrade Acadia’s trails faster than crews can restorethem. Acadia committed $4 million dollars, mostly from Acadia NationalPark entry fees, and Friends pledged to match it with $9 in private dona-tions. Nearly $8 million was pledged or donated by the end of 1999.

Some of the firsts this program achieved: 1) Friends received thelargest-ever donation to a Maine conservation nonprofit – $5million; 2)Acadia is the first site in the 128-year history of national parks to havea privately endowed trail system; 3) Acadia is the first national park touse entry fees to match private fundraising; 4) First Lady Hillary Clintonconferred a Millennium Legacy Trail designation on the park’s 130-mile trail system, honoring the history-making restoration program.

In June 1999, Island Explorer shuttle buses set some records oftheir own. Over 142,000 passengers rode the Island Explorer buses, dou-bling initial expectations. Eight propane-powered buses operated onsix routes through Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island com-munities. The 28-passenger buses were free to riders and could carryup to four bicycles at a time. According to an August 1999 survey byTom Crikelair Associates, 93% of Island Explorer passengers felt the bussystem improved their visit to Acadia, and 99.7% felt that the serviceshould continue.

Not only did the bus system improve the quality of the visitor expe-rience, it also helped contribute to cleaner air and fewer traffic prob-lems. According to the Maine Department of Environmental Protec-tion, the Island Explorer buses reduced air pollutants in the Acadiaregion by approximately 560 tons. The National Park Service also esti-mated that the Island Explorer buses reduced traffic on Mount DesertIsland by 27,905 automobiles and 14,773 recreational vehicles over thesummer. Stretched end-to-end, these vehicles would have extended133.4 miles, roughly the distance between Bar Harbor and Calais.

Friends of Acadia contributed approximately $20,000 to the IslandExplorer in 1999 thanks to the generous support of our donors. ThroughFriends’ donation, Downeast Transportation purchased a gasoline-pow-ered spare bus, rented school buses for periods of high demand, printedextra copies of the bus route maps for wider distribution, among otheroperational details. Friends also granted $10,000 to the Town of BarHarbor to implement improvements on the Village Green related tothe bus system. New wheelchair accessible sidewalks were built, busroute signs were installed, and the area was landscaped to accommo-date waiting passengers.

The photos presented here illustrate some of Friends programs andaccomplishments — for a complete list of Friends of Acadia’s accom-plishments in 1999, turn to page 5.

Our thanks to the many members and donors who support Friendsof Acadia.

An Island Explorer shuttle bus on the Park Loop Road, one of six routes on the island in 1999. 142,260passengers chose to ride the buses rather than drive their cars, reducing emissions and traffic congestion.

Acadia Youth Conservation Corps put newly learned trail skillsto work reconstructing the Jordan Pond Trail. In 1999, theAYCC hauled and spread more than 100 yards of crushedrock and gravel; lined more than 100 yards of tread with newwall or coping stone; moved 20 yards of rock constructionmaterial by high-line system; built 1,485 feet of graveled tread, and prepared 295 feet of extra tread for finishing. The resultis a well-built, ecologically friendly, front-country trail.

The Maine Conservation Corps began construction withFriends and the park of the Great Meadow Loop, a village con-nector trail planned to provide easy walking access to the JesupPath, and other park trails, from Bar Harbor.

Secretary Babbitt unveiled a surprise gift of thanks for the Colkets. From left, Ken Olson, Bob Stanton, and Paul Haertel look on.

Acadia Trails Forever was inaugurated on July 29, 1999. ATF Chairman Charlie Tyson, Friends Chair-man Lee Judd, Ruth Colket, Tristram Colket, Friends President Ken Olson, NPS Director Robert Stantonand ANP Superintendent Paul Haertel joined Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt (speaking) in introduc-ing and honoring the model public-private partnership that will rehabilitate and endow Acadia’s 130-mile historic trail system.

Friends funded the Ridge Runner program for the fourth con-secutive year. Among other responsibilities, the Ridge Runners:erected 200+ cairns on Sargent, Penobscot, and Cadillacmountains, and destroyed numerous unauthorized and mis-guiding cairns and rock assemblages.

Friends of AcadiaThe mission of Friends of Acadia is to preserve and protect the outstanding natural beauty,

ecological vitality, and cultural distinctiveness of Acadia National Park and the surroundingcommunities, and thereby to ensure a high quality experience for visitors and residents.

O P E R A T I N G P H I L O S O P H YTo accomplish our mission, we...

Champion park interests: We advocate for Acadia National Park among the general public, before Congress, and within the National Park Service and other government entities, whether federal, state or local. We forge alliances with agencies and nonprofits to nullify outside threats.

Represent park users: We speak for users in the continual betterment of the park and itsoperations. We seek a broad membership: everyone who visits Acadia National Park is encouraged tojoin Friends of Acadia.

Make targeted grants: We raise private-sector funds for select capital projects in Acadia NationalPark and for its enlightened stewardship. We strive to supplement federal appropriations and services, not replace them.

Enhance communities: We promote conservation in border communities through programsand grants that enhance their natural character and complement park values.

Promote volunteerism: We supply a corps of motivated volunteers to meet designated parkneeds, including the upkeep of trails and carriage roads.

Produce tangible results: We achieve measurable results from programs and funds expended.

Leverage donated funds: We operate on a sound financial basis, leveraging member dues andother gifts to bring the highest conservation return per donated dollar.

Operate independently: We function as a free-standing nonprofit organization, supportive ofthe park but independent from it. We reserve the right to differ respectfully.
