English Primary Department (2020) 1 Stay-at-home RESOURCE PACKS For Year 1 and YEAR 2 THEME: SHOPPING FOR FOOD Choice of theme: For the coming two weeks, we will still focus on FOOD, shopping for food in particular. The choice of the theme ‘Shopping for Food’ emerged from two young girls that go by the name of Louisa and Emma. They really enjoyed our first resource pack and to show how much they appreciated it, they even shared a video with us of them making a yummy butter and marmalade sandwich. So, we thought we could ask them what our next focus should be and they both agreed it should be ‘Shopping for food’. I hope Louisa and Emma and all other children enjoy this resource pack as much as we enjoyed creating it. Please do send us some photos, videos or feedback via email ([email protected]) and with your permission we’ll upload them on our website (http://taleinmalta.wixsite.com/elrc/videos-audio-clips- and-feedback) so other children can enjoy them too. Stay-at-home RESOURCE PACKS

For the coming two weeks, we will still focus on

DAY 1: SPEAKING

Ask your child: Can you mention any shops we go to regularly or maybe not so frequently? (e.g. clothes shop, ice cream shop, hardware store, fish shop and so on)

Now, ask them: Where do we usually buy our groceries and green groceries? (possible answers could be, from the grocery store or the supermarket). Tell them that sometimes, people shop at the local (farmers’) market and sometimes they shop at the supermarket. Ask them to compare and contrast the following two pictures and tell them to spot the differences. Encourage them to spot as many as they can. Use the Venn diagram below to help you.

Ask the child: How are some people shopping these days because they cannot go out? (Online shopping) Show them this picture and discuss with them the advantages and disadvantages of online shopping.

DAY 2: LISTENING

Now, tell the child that some people enjoy buying different groceries from the farmer’s market. Tell them to look at the nursery rhyme below and together read and sing it. You may wish to watch it via this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYeNteLMHDE . If you do, encourage the child to talk about what they can see in the video clip and how it is different from the one below.

DAY 2: READING

Now, encourage your child to read the nursery rhyme with you again. The child may wish to read parts of this nursery rhyme, particular words like: fat, pig, jig, hog, jog, bun. Encourage them to come up with other similar words that finish with –at, -ig, -og, - un and rhyme with FAT, PIG and HOG. Now ask them to read the following words:

Encourage your child to draw

something in this space and to

colour and design it in any way they like. Ask them to

describe it to you.

They can also write their own

line in the nursery rhyme. They can use some of the

words above.

DAY 3: READING

Ask your child: What nursery rhyme did we read yesterday? (To Market To Market) We find a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables at the market. Encourage your child to read the names of each one. Encourage them to go look for these items at home and to mention others that aren’t listed here.

Interesting fact: Did you know that a tomato is actually

a fruit? However, we usually use it as a vegetable!

Now, look at this picture of a supermarket in England. Now ask your child to complete these two tasks. Task 1: Put a tick () next to the items you can buy from this section of this supermarket. Tick () the ones you can only see in the picture above.

Mum: Hello? Amy: Hi, Mum. It’s Amy. Dad and I are here at the supermarket. We’ve got your list,

and we’re doing the shopping, but we’ve got some questions. Mum: No problem, Amy. What do you want to know? Amy: We’ve got the crisps and biscuits for my school snacks, but Dad and I don’t know

what type of oil to buy. Mum: Get olive oil. I always cook with olive oil because it’s the healthiest type of oil. Amy: Right, olive oil. Now, should we get orange juice or fizzy drinks? Mum: Get both. We’ll have orange juice for breakfast and fizzy drinks with dinner

tonight. Amy: Speaking of dinner … you’re making beef with baked beans, right? Mum: Yes, that’s right. Beef with baked beans is your dad’s favourite meal. It will be

ready in half an hour, so please hurry. And don’t forget the carrots. I want carrots for the salad. In fact, get about half a kilo of carrots.

Amy: Right, carrots and peppers are on the list and Dad’s getting them right now. What about dessert? What’s for dessert?

Mum: Would you like fruit salad or watermelon? Amy: Watermelon is a great idea! Uh, Mum, I love watermelon but I don’t know how to

You may wish to discuss the tasks together first and make sure the child understands the words in the text.

Listen to Amy talking to her mum. Write the list of food she and her father are going to buy at the

DAY 7: READING

Encourage your child to write a shopping list. They may wish to copy the words from the list or from others mentioned earlier on in the week. Tell your child that you wish to make soup and a fruit salad. Ask them to write a list of groceries they would need to make a vegetable soup (they can refer to the story “TO Market To Market”). Tell your child: We are going to make a vegetable soup. Read the list of ingredients below and write the list of vegetables you need to buy to make this vegetable soup: Remind them what was done last week and how you discussed what a recipe looks like and where they need to look to find ingredients. Ask questions like: What three things does a recipe have? (list of ingredients, equipment and method)
