National Center for Genome Analysis Support
Overview
Who is NCGAS?
What do they do?
How does this help me?
Started as a 3-year NSF-funded project to support genomics.
A collaborative project between our center here at IU, the Pervasive Technology
Institute and our partners:
Who we are
• 2.45 FTE Direct Staff
1. Yours Truly – 75% – Bioinformatics Analyst
2. Le-Shin Wu - PhD Computer Scientist
3. Tom Doak – 50% – PhD Genomicist and Biology Liason
4. Bill Barnett – 20% – Director and man with the plan
• Direct access to the rest of our partner supercomputing centers
What we do
• Provide Cyberinfrastructure to get things
done
• Software support and gateways to lower
barriers
• Consulting for genomics projects

Meet the family
Meet the family
• Short-term project storage on the Data Capacitor 2 High Performance Storage System
• Storage of up to 50 terabytes of research data on IU's Scientific Data Archive tape storage system.
• Services for curation and long-term storage of data sets and final results from genome research in the IUScholarWorks
• Internet 2 backbone for fast data transfer
Integrated collection of high-end compute resources for US researchers
Distributed network of opportunistically available compute
resources for US researchers

NCGAS establishes tools, hardens them, and moves them into production.
Each project can get 50 TB of archive space for raw data and finished products.
Individual projects can get duplicate VMs.
Policies guarantee that untouched data is removed with time.

Who can get in on this?
• NSF Funded Projects and startups– If you have an NSF-Funded genomics project, you are entitled
to use our services for free!– If you have a project in mind that is eligible, we may be able to
accommodate your project so that you can make your proposal.
• Members of the IU Community– As a member of IU, you are entitled to use our services for free!– IU pays for our electricity, heating and air conditioning in the
Cyberinfrastructure Building located on 10th and the Bypass, Bloomington IN
