What’s the first “aha!” moment you’ve witnessed in your life? Was it the a child discovering that an empty box can be imagined to be anything from a rowboat to a spaceship? Was it a young boy feeling the freedom of a bicycle minus training wheels or Dad’s steady hand on the back of the seat? Was it a young girl in safety goggles learning that the volcano she made at the kitchen table takes first prize at the science fair?

Each of us sees the joy of discovery in so many ways throughout our lives. And that joy of discovery, of learning, and growing is exactly at the core of the work of the SAE Foundation. These “aha” moments are the results of the basics we teach students through the AWIM, F1 in Schools, and Collegiate Design Series programs, and the “aha” moments can lead to a lifetime love of science, technology, engineering and math.

Your support of the Foundation and its educational programs are critical to the future of the global automotive, aerospace and commercial vehicle markets. In classrooms around the world, SAE-trained educators are addressing the crisis in STEM education, bringing to life these basic STEM principles through creative and fun projects that encourage discovery, creativity and innovation. So many “aha” moments can begin at the very point you provide your support.

Tonight, we pay tribute to Simon Nagata and to Toyota for their support over the years to the Foundation and to education in many forms. Nagata-san will receive the Industry Leader of the Year Award and Toyota will receive the Gordon Millar Award. We also honor Joe Anderson with the Don Abelson Award for his dedication to SAE over the last several decades, and we will acknowledge the future through our Young Industry Leader awardees, Sridhar Raveendran of Caterpillar and Dr. Yanping Xia of Delphi Automotive Systems.

Most importantly, we honor those of you who help make real the work of the Foundation. You may be a volunteer, a donor, a teacher, an executive, or a company that has been generous in your support. Individually and collectively, the future STEMs from you. You are helping us as we help young people discover the joy in learning. For that, we salute you, and we thank you.

Together, we can look forward to many more years of successfully giving our children the drive, desire and joy for inventing the future. Tonight, we celebrate the “aha” moments in life… many of which begin with you.

Joseph B. Anderson, Jr.TAG Holdings LLC

Joseph B. Anderson, Jr. moves easily among the worlds of corporate, philanthropic, and government leadership. Born in Topeka, Anderson graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1965, with a Bachelor of Science degree in math and engineering. He received

two master’s degrees from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1972 and 1973, and attended the Army’s Command and General Staff College in 1977. He is a 1984 graduate of the Harvard Advanced Management Program, and has also received honorary doctorate degrees from Kettering University and Central Michigan University.

Anderson commanded troops as an infantry officer in the 82nd Airborne Division and served two tours of duty with the 1st Cavalry Division in Vietnam. In addition to troop command, he served as aide-de-camp to two general officers, and was an assistant professor in the Department of Social Sciences at West Point. Mr. Anderson and the infantry platoon he commanded in Vietnam were subjects of the highly acclaimed documentary film “The Anderson Platoon,” shown in more than 20 countries and earned both an Oscar and an Emmy as “Best Documentary Film of 1967.” He was decorated many times during his 13-year military career.

In 1977, Mr. Anderson was selected to be a White House Fellow and worked as special assistant to Secretary of Commerce, Juanita Kreps. He continued to work for Secretary Kreps until he joined General Motors in 1979. He held several manufacturing assignments at Pontiac Motor Division; was plant manager of the Pressed Metal and Plating Operations; and held several staff assignments until April 1989 when he was appointed director of Exterior Systems for Inland Fisher Guide Division. .

In December 1992, after 13 years of service, Mr. Anderson resigned from GM to become president and CEO of Composite Energy Management Systems, Inc., (CEMSI). In October 1994 he acquired a controlling interest in Chivas Products Limited, a manufacturer of interior trim products

and lighting assemblies principally for the automotive industry. In 1997, the company was restructured as Chivas Industries, LLC where Mr. Anderson maintained controlling ownership and held the position of Chairman of the Board & CEO before divesting his interest in 2002.

Mr. Anderson is a living example of putting past experience to work for the future. “Particularly in the military, my superiors went out of their way to mentor me,” he says. “I now spend a significant amount of time mentoring young people in their academic endeavors, business entrepreneurship and share my experiences across corporate America – including those who are interested in serving on boards and in leadership positions. Others did that for me…I think it’s important for me to do the same now.”

Mr. Anderson is currently the majority owner, chairman and chief executive officer of TAG Holdings, LLC which owns several North America based manufacturing, service and technology based companies. These companies serve a variety of industries including automotive, heavy equipment, aerospace and defense.

Mr. Anderson currently serves on the company Boards of Directors of Quaker Chemical Corporation, Meritor, Inc. and Rite Aid Corporation. He is also on the board of directors of the Original Equipment Suppliers Association and the board of the National Recreation Foundation. Mr. Anderson serves as a member of the U.S. Department of Commerce Manufacturing Council for the term 2012-2014. Mr. Anderson’s community involvement includes Horizons-Upward Bound Advisory Board.

“I have a strong engineering and math background and I see great value in that – not only functioning as an engineer, but also in problem solving,” Anderson says. “That’s especially important in manufacturing as there is no shortage of need for people who know how to solve issues and execute a plan.” He says that is a primary focus of his work on the Manufacturing Council. “Helping America compete on a global basis is critical. Other countries continue to come here to compete… we must focus on execution of roles and responsibilities every day,” he emphasizes. “We have to ‘go at it’ full force every single day.” And he does that, by example, by leadership, by contributing, every single day.

The Stefan Pischinger Young Industry Leadership Award recognizes industry professionals with less than 12 years of industry experience, who have significant accomplishments and potential for leadership growth.

Dr. Yanping XiaAdvanced Technologist & Technology Planner Delphi Automotive, Thermal Systems

Colleagues of Dr. Yanping Xia characterize her as “one of the strongest young engineers at Delphi, with a deep understanding of technology

and a strong contributor” to the company’s technology and plans. Over the course of her career, she has helped enhance competitiveness and market share by being part of the design team for the first-to-world indoor/outdoor MCHX® air conditioning units and both residential and commercial heat pumps. Dr. Xia is a versatile leader, with strengths in project management, personal involvement in training of her team, and is self-taught in FEA and CFD tools. She has helped enhance the company’s simulation and modeling capabilities and processes.

Dr. Xia is currently the principal investigator for a project Delphi has won, working with a global team comprised of Delphi, Tata, and IGSD leaders. The project is managed under the auspices of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition, United Nations Environmental Programme.

An important mentor – Dr. Prasad Kadle, Delphi Thermal’s director of Advanced Engineering – has been Dr. Xia’s inspiration for great leadership. “He has a keen vision on future technology, driving us forward with high efficiency and authority and treating employees like friends and family at the same time,” she says. “I hope I can be a leader like him someday.” She is also inspired by great books or speeches by strong women: “They inspire me to get the most out of my life, and to become a better person.”

A graduate of Tsinghua University in Beijing with both BE and ME in thermal engineering, Dr. Xia was awarded a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois in 2006. Dr. Xia has eight patents pending in the United States and holds two Chinese patents. She also is a Black Belt in Six Sigma and a reviewer for several technical journals. She is a member of ASHRAE and SAE, contributing to both societies through the presentation and publishing of papers and service on several committees. Additionally, she is actively involved in projects for thermal, HVAC and environmental energy engineering at the University of Illinois and the University of Maryland. She is also training her peers in the use of condenser simulation software, and supervising summer interns. She was a mentor for SAE’s 2014 Speeding Mentoring Event.

“My favorite thing about being an engineer is to be able to turn ideas into engineering designs, and to make continuous improvement to products. The auto industry is important to environmental sustainability and to the economy, and it’s our mission at Delphi to strive to make a difference,” she says. “My advice to young people would be to never stop being innovative. Keep the magic ideas coming!”

Sridhar RaveendranPowertrain HIL Team Lead Caterpillar Electronics

Raveendran is an engineering team leader in the electronics division at Caterpillar, Inc. in Peoria. He joined the company in 2008 after holding positions at Continental Corporation;

the Center for Energy Research at UNLV; John Deere in Chennai, India; and MM Motors Ltd., a John Deere dealer in Tanjore.

Mr. Raveendran is leading Caterpillar’s powertrain software test team, and has expanded it significantly over the past two years, while also saving the company significant costs in engineering and software testing velocity. He expects his team to continue on that trajectory for this year.

Sridhar’s colleagues laud him for his work in new business strategies, procedures and testing capabilities to increase efficiency, help dealers increase their turnover, and create new markets. He is also credited with strong leadership skills, managing global validation teams for more than 13 product lines.

Sridhar says he was influenced by many people, “from farmers in remote India during my first job, to currently where I am working at Caterpillar.” He says, however that his father had the greatest impact on his life. “Hailing from a very humble background, he worked diligently to earn a PhD in biology and eventually became a research director in genetics. He is simple, disciplined and throughout his selfless distinguished career, guided man doctoral and graduate students. I owe my achievements to him.”

Sridhar coaches high school students in robotics competitions, and teaches undergraduate courses in mechanical engineering at UNLV. He is a certified quality engineer through ASQC and has been a member of SAE, the Indian Society of Technical Engineers, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He earned a degree in mechanical engineering in 2002 from Bharathiyar University and has received several awards over the course of his career, including outstanding contributions to software quality and first prize for papers on composites and fuel cells at a technical symposium in India.

“The auto industry is going through an exciting phase, embracing cutting edge technologies that are defining new hybrid systems, infotainment, telematics and new human-machine interfaces,” Sridhar says. He encourages young people to pursue technical careers, adding, “As an engineer and technical leader, to be able to contribute is the best experience I can get!”

Osamu “Simon” Nagata was named president and CEO of Toyota’s engineering and manufacturing (TEMA) operations in North American in March 2014. Known for his trouble-shooting capability and visionary leadership, Nagata is helping to lead Toyota’s expansion in the United States, Canada and Mexico, as well as the company’s aggressive efforts to modernize product development, commonize components, and work closely with the entire supplier base.

Mr. Nagata, a native of Nagoya, joined Toyota in April 1980 after earning his bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Tokyo. In 2000, he was transferred to Toyota Motor Manufacturing North America, Inc., the predecessor of TEMA, where he served as vice president in charge of purchasing. In 2007, he returned to Japan to head the company’s Miyoshi and Tahara factories, which made drivetrain components and assembled such vehicles as the Lexus LS and Toyota Land cruiser. In 2009, he became a managing officer at TMC. In April 2011, he was named deputy chief officer of TMC’s External Affairs Group, and was a key leader of the task force to

improve external communications and government relations in the midst of Toyota’s recall crisis.

As head of TEMA, Mr. Nagata is responsible for 14 manufacturing sites in the United States, Canada and Mexico. He is the first head of Toyota’s North American engineering and manufacturing to reside in Michigan, making his home in Novi.

His advice to others and motto for life: “Keep hope alive.” His prized possession is a Japanese schoolbook on Martin Luther King Jr., autographed by the Rev. Jesse Jackson.

A WORLD IN MOTION

Primary School ChallengesThe unique feature of this program is the use of portions of a problem-solving process employed by engineers working in teams. The “Engineering Design Experience” for Primary students consists of: Set Goals, Build Knowledge, Design, Build and Test and Present.

These activities for students in grades K-3 were developed through generous support from Nissan, North America.

Rolling ThingsLaunching cars from ramps, students investigate the effects of different ramp heights and car weights have on distance traveled, measuring and recording data gathered through variable testing.

Pinball DesignersStudents design a homemade pinball game and explore the behavior of the different components, such as the pinball, ball traps, and bumpers.

Engineering Inspired By NatureStudents investigate methods of seed dispersal in nature and then use that knowledge to create paper helicopters and parachutes.

Straw RocketsStudents create a straw rocket that flies the farthest and highest through optimizing their own design.

Elementary School ChallengesSkimmer ChallengeStudents construct paper sailboats and test the effects of different sail shapes, sizes and construction methods to meet specific performance criteria. Friction, forces, the effect of surface area and design are some of the physical phenomena students encounter in this challenge.

JetToy ChallengeStudents make balloon-powered toy cars that meet specific criteria: distance traveled, weight carried, accurate performance and speed. Jet propulsion, friction, air resistance and design are the core scientific concepts students explore in this challenge.

Gravity Cruiser ChallengeStudents focus on understanding the relationships between the “sweep” of a lever arm, the number of winds a string makes around an axle and the distance the gravity cruiser travels. Students also investigate how the diameter of the wheels and axles, and the amount of weight placed on the level, affect the gravity cruiser’s speed and distance. This challenge introduces a rich activity in critical thinking, and students learn how to use the experimental method to test hypotheses and solve a tricky engineering problem. This curriculum was developed through generous support from the GM Foundation.

Middle School ChallengesFuel Cell ChallengeStudent teams design a toy car that uses a PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) fuel cell to power the electric motor. Elements of electrical currents, “Green Design” and transformations of energy are explored as the teams develop their project. This curriculum was developed through generous support from the GM Foundation.

Motorized Toy Car ChallengeStudents develop new designs for electric gear driven toys. To meet a specific set of design requirements, students must write proposals, draw sketches and work with models to develop a plan. Force and friction, simple machines, levers and gears, torque and design are core concepts covered.

Glider ChallengeStudents explore the relationship between force and motion and the effects of weight and lift on a glider. The glider activity culminates in a book-signing event where each design team presents its prototype, and the class presents its manuscript to Mobility Press “representatives” and members of the local community. Students learn the importance of understanding consumer demands and the relationships between data analysis and variable manipulations.

High School ChallengesIn the F1 in Schools® Challenge, groups of three to six students form a team, assume roles and prepare a business plan, develop budgets and raise sponsorships to support materials needed and team travel to regional and national competitions.

Using 3D CAD (Computer–Assisted Design) software the team designs a Formula One™ car of the future. The aerodynamics of their design is analyzed for drag co-efficiency in a Virtual Reality Wind Tunnel using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) software. Then, using 3D CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacture) software, the team evaluates the most efficient machining strategy to make the car out of balsa wood using a CNC (Computer Numerical Controlled) Router.

The CO2 cartridge-powered cars are tested using wind and smoke tunnel equipment to fine tune designs to optimize speed and drag co-efficiency. The cars are put to the ultimate test on an elevated 24-meter track. During the race, teams are judged on car speed as well as supporting evidence of their design in portfolios. Each team’s presentation and marketing display in ‘the pits’ are also factored into their performance.

COLLEGIATE DESIGN SERIES PROGRAMSThe Collegiate Design Series (CDS) has set the standard for exceptional design competitions where engineering students obtain hands-on experience in the design, manufacture and testing of real vehicles. These college-level competitions have enhanced the educational experience of engineering students around the world and inspired the next generation of young talent.

These competitions include:

• Formula SAE®: The premier event for aspiring automotive engineers in which teams of college students design, build, and race mini-Formula-style race cars.

• Aero Design®: Teams of college students build and fly gas-powered aircraft models. The object of this competition is to design and build a model aircraft that can take off and land while carrying the predicted maximum cargo.

• SAE Baja™: These regional competitions pit student-designed off-road vehicles against one another, over rough terrain, and through water.

• Supermileage®: This competition provides students with the opportunity to set world fuel economy records while earning practical experience in design and fabrication. Some student-designed vehicles have delivered in excess of 2,000 m.p.g.

• Clean Snowmobile Challenge®: This competition provides students with the opportunity to design and build snowmobiles that perform at the same level as stock snowmobiles, but are “cleaner” and quieter.


SAE International and the SAE Foundation recognize the efforts of mobility industry professionals, STEM educators and both undergraduate and graduate students who have excelled in their areas with 70 awards amounting to more than $43,000 and 14 scholarships amounting to more than $70,000 that make STEM career dreams come true.
