    John

    John

    IntroductIon//

The apostle John wrote the ourth Gospel sometime betweena.d. 8590, in order that you may believe that Jesus is theChrist, the Son o God, and that believing you may have lie

in His name (20:31). Although Johns Gospel is a very personal, eyewitness account o who Jesus is and what He came to do, Johndoes not identiy himsel by name. Instead, he consistently describeshimsel by using some orm o the phrase, the disciple whom Jesusloved.

John uses very simple language to convey his message, but the truthhe presents is as rich and deep as anything in the Bible. While theother three Gospels center on key events in Jesus lie, John otenocuses upon the meaning o those events. Consider the miracleo the eeding o the fve thousand, which all our Gospels record(Matt. 14:1521; Mark 6:3144; Luke 9:1117; John 6:113). OnlyJohn gives us Jesus message on the Bread o Lie, which ollowsthat miracle. Here, as elsewhere, John puts special emphasis on thedeity o Jesus; so he reports Jesus words, I am the bread o lie. He

who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Meshall never thirst (6:35).

John does not always order his Gospel in a chronological way, butinstead highlights seven miracles that Jesus perormed and seven Iam statements that the Savior made. In ollowing this plan, Johngives us a unique perspective; in act, 90 percent o the materialound in his Gospel appears nowhere else. John selected what hedid in order to lead his readers to put their aith in Jesus Christ as theMessiah, the Savior o the world. For this reason, the word believe

plays a critical role in the Gospel o John.

14And the Word became lesh and dweltamong us, and we beheld His glory, the gloryas o the only begotten o the Father, ull o

saying, This was He o whom I said, He whocomes ater me is preerred beore me, or Hewas beore me.

16Anda o His ullness we have all received, and grace or grace. 17For the law was giventhrough Moses, but grace and truth camethrough Jesus Christ. 18No one has seen Godat any time. The only begotten Son,a who is inthe bosom o the Father, He has declared Him.

19Now this is the testimony o John, whenthe Jews sent priests and Levites rom Jerusa-lem to ask him, Who are you?

20He conessed, and did not deny, butconessed, I am not the Christ.

21And they asked him, What then? Areyou Elijah?

He said, I am not.Are you the Prophet? And he answered, No.22Then they said to him, Who are you,

that we may give an answer to those who sentus? What do you say about yoursel?

23He said: I amThe voice of one crying in the wilderness:Make straight the way of the Lord, a

as the prophet Isaiah said.24Now those who were sent were romthe Pharisees. 25And they asked him, saying,Why then do you baptize i you are not theChrist, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?

26John answered them, saying, I baptizewith water, but there stands One among youwhom you do not know. 27It is He who, com-ing ater me, is preerred beore me, whosesandal strap I am not worthy to loose.

28These things were done in Bethabaraa be-

yond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

29The next day John saw Jesus comingtoward him, and said, Behold! The Lamb

o God who takes away the sin o the world!30This is He o whom I said, Ater me comesa Man who is preerred beore me, or He wasbeore me. 31I did not know Him; but thatHe should be revealed to Israel, thereore Icame baptizing with water.

32And John bore witness, saying, I sawthe Spirit descending rom heaven like adove, and He remained upon Him. 33I didnot know Him, but He who sent me to bap-tize with water said to me, Upon whom yousee the Spirit descending, and remaining onHim, this is He who baptizes with the HolySpirit. 34And I have seen and testiied thatthis is the Son o God.

35Again, the next day, John stood with twoo his disciples. 36And looking at Jesus as Hewalked, he said, Behold the Lamb o God!

37The two disciples heard him speak, andthey ollowed Jesus. 38Then Jesus turned, andseeing them ollowing, said to them, Whatdo you seek?

They said to Him, Rabbi (which is to

say, when translated, Teacher), where areYou staying?

39He said to them, Come and see. Theycame and saw where He was staying, and re-mained with Him that day (now it was aboutthe tenth hour).

40One o the two who heard John speak, and ollowed Him, was Andrew, Simon Pe-ters brother. 41He irst ound his own brotherSimon, and said to him, We have ound the

Messiah (which is translated, the Christ).42And he brought him to Jesus. Now when Jesus looked at him, He said,

4Jesus said to her, Woman, what doesyour concern have to do with Me? My hourhas not yet come.

5His mother said to the servants, What-ever He says to you, do it.

6Now there were set there six water-pots o stone, according to the manner o

    115 John 4 :10

3:13 aNU-Text omits who is in heaven. 3:15 aNU-Text omits not perish but.

I tell you heavenly things? 13No one has as-cended to heaven but He who came downrom heaven, that is, the Son o Man who isin heaven.a14And as Moses lited up the ser-

pent in the wilderness, even so must the Sono Man be lited up, 15that whoever believes inHim should not perish buta have eternal lie.16For God so loved the world that He gaveHis only begotten Son, that whoever believesin Him should not perish but have everlast-ing lie. 17For God did not send His Son into

the world to condemn the world, but that theworld through Him might be saved.

18He who believes in Him is not con-demned; but he who does not believe is con-demned already, because he has not believedin the name o the only begotten Son o God.19And this is the condemnation, that the lighthas come into the world, and men loveddarkness rather than light, because theirdeeds were evil. 20For everyone practicingevil hates the light and does not come to thelight, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21Buthe who does the truth comes to the light, that

his deeds may be clearly seen, that they havebeen done in God.

22Ater these things Jesus and His disciplescame into the land o Judea, and there He re-mained with them and baptized. 23Now Johnalso was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, be-cause there was much water there. And theycame and were baptized. 24For John had not

yet been thrown into prison.25Then there arose a dispute betweensome o Johns disciples and the Jews aboutpuriication. 26And they came to John andsaid to him, Rabbi, He who was with youbeyond the Jordan, to whom you have

testiiedbehold, He is baptizing, and all arecoming to Him!

27John answered and said, A man can re-ceive nothing unless it has been given to him

    rom heaven.28

You yourselves bear me wit-ness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but,I have been sent beore Him. 29He who hasthe bride is the bridegroom; but the riend othe bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because o the bridegroomsvoice. Thereore this joy o mine is ulilled.30He must increase, but I mustdecrease. 31Hewho comes rom above is above all; he who iso the earth is earthly and speaks o the earth. He who comes rom heaven is above all.32And what He has seen and heard, that Hetestiies; and no one receives His testimony.33He who has received His testimony has cer-tiied that God is true. 34For He whom Godhas sent speaks the words o God, or Goddoes not give the Spirit by measure. 35TheFather loves the Son, and has given all thingsinto His hand. 36He who believes in the Sonhas everlasting lie; and he who does not be-lieve the Son shall not see lie, but the wratho God abides on him.

29Thereore the people who stood by andheard it said that it had thundered. Otherssaid, An angel has spoken to Him.

30Jesus answered and said, This voice did

not come because o Me, but or your sake.31Now is the judgment o this world; now theruler o this world will be cast out. 32And I,i I am lited up rom the earth, will draw all

peoples to Mysel. 33This He said, signiyingby what death He would die.

34The people answered Him, We haveheard rom the law that the Christ remainsorever; and how can You say, The Son oMan must be lited up? Who is this Son oMan?

35Then Jesus said to them, A little whilelonger the light is with you. Walk while youhave the light, lest darkness overtake you; hewho walks in darkness does not know wherehe is going. 36While you have the light, be-lieve in the light, that you may become sonso light. These things Jesus spoke, and de-parted, and was hidden rom them.

    W has Believe o rep?

37But although He had done so manysigns beore them, they did not believe inHim, 38that the word o Isaiah the prophetmight be ulilled, which he spoke:

Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of theLord

    been revealed?a

39Thereore they could not believe, be-

    cause Isaiah said again:

40He has blinded their eyes and hardenedtheir hearts,

Lest they should see withtheireyes,Lest they should understand withtheir

hearts and turn,So that I should heal them.a

41These things Isaiah said whena he saw Hisglory and spoke o Him.

42Nevertheless even among the rulersmany believed in Him, but because o thePharisees they did not coness Him, lest they

should be put out o the synagogue; 43or theyloved the praise o men more than the praiseo God.

44Then Jesus cried out and said, He who

believes in Me, believes not in Me but in Himwho sent Me. 45And he who sees Me seesHim who sent Me. 46I have come as a lightinto the world, that whoever believes in Meshould not abide in darkness. 47And i anyonehears My words and does not believe,a I donot judge him; or I did not come to judgethe world but to save the world. 48He who re-

jects Me, and does not receive My words, hasthat which judges himthe word that I havespoken will judge him in the last day. 49For

I have not spoken on My own authority; butthe Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak.50And I know that His command is everlast-ing lie. Thereore, whatever I speak, just asthe Father has told Me, so I speak.

loved His own who were in the world, Heloved them to the end.

2And supper being ended,a the devil hav-ing already put it into the heart o Judas Is-cariot, Simons son, to betray Him, 3Jesus,knowing that the Father had given all thingsinto His hands, and that He had come romGod and was going to God, 4rose rom sup-per and laid aside His garments, took a towel

    and girded Himsel.5

Ater that, He pouredwater into a basin and began to wash the dis-ciples eet, and to wipe them with the towelwith which He was girded. 6Then He came toSimon Peter. And Peter said to Him, Lord, are You washing my eet?

7Jesus answered and said to him, WhatI am doing you do not understand now, but

you will know ater this.8Peter said to Him, You shall never wash

my eet!Jesus answered him, I I do not wash you,

you have no part with Me.9Simon Peter said to Him, Lord, not my

eet only, but also myhands and myhead!10Jesus said to him, He who is bathed

needs only to wash his eet, but is completelyclean; and you are clean, but not all o you.11For He knew who would betray Him; there-ore He said, You are not all clean.

12So when He had washed their eet, taken

His garments, and sat down again, He saidto them, Do you know what I have done to

you? 13You call Me Teacher and Lord, andyou say well, or so I am. 14I I then, yourLordand Teacher, have washed your eet, you alsoought to wash one anothers eet. 15For I havegiven you an example, that you should do asI have done to you. 16Most assuredly, I say to

you, a servant is not greater than his master;nor is he who is sent greater than he who senthim. 17I you know these things, blessed are

    you i you do them.

18I do not speak concerning all o you.I know whom I have chosen; but that theScripture may be ulilled, He who eats breadwith Meahas lifted up his heel against Me.b19Now I tell you beore it comes, that whenit does come to pass, you may believe that Iam He.20Most assuredly, I say to you, he whoreceives whomever I send receives Me; and hewho receives Me receives Him who sent Me.

21When Jesus had said these things, Hewas troubled in spirit, and testiied and said,Most assuredly, I say to you, one o youwill betray Me. 22Then the disciples looked

at one another, perplexed about whom Hespoke.

23Now there was leaning on Jesus bosomone o His disciples, whom Jesus loved. 24Si-mon Peter thereore motioned to him to askwho it was o whom He spoke.

25Then, leaning backa on Jesus breast, hesaid to Him, Lord, who is it?

26Jesus answered, It is he to whom I shallgive a piece o bread when I have dipped it.And having dipped the bread, He gave it to

Judas Iscariot, the son o Simon. 27Now aterthe piece o bread, Satan entered him. ThenJesus said to him, What you do, do quickly.28But no one at the table knew or what rea-son He said this to him. 29For some thought, because Judas had the money box, that Jesushad said to him, Buythose things we need orthe east, or that he should give somethingto the poor.

30Having received the piece o bread, hethen went out immediately. And it was night.

Youwill seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, WhereI am going, you cannot come, so now I sayto you. 34A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved
