This May we unveiled the shiny new wing

of the Colonial Theatre. As the construction crew from CH&E peeled back the paper from the new lobby floor we suddenly realized we had reached the destination we’d sought for so many years.

The past 12 months have been more like two very different epochs than a single continuous year. The first was marked by countless construction meetings, dependable film schedules and single features each week, the very last Member’s party in the ‘original style’, and the transformation of the theatre’s business office. (For about a month, most worked from the third floor screening room.)

In the second, our petite staff doubled in size through the hiring of box officers, concessionists, an Assistant

House Manager, a full-time Marketing Director, and a part time Technology and Facilities Director. And after the soft-opening of the new wing in May, celebrated with the donors who made it all possible, we’re proud to say that film attendance, concessions revenues, and film grosses also doubled.

This fall we also welcomed a new Board President, Marian Moskowitz, as longtime Board President, Ken Mumma, stepped back from his leadership role. Ken has done so much for Phoenixville as an original member of the group that saved this theatre back in 1999.

We’ve taken a big leap in expanding. This choice to grow beyond the bounds of what we’ve known for the last 17 years has been made in service of your patron experience, in response to the rapidly changing community around us,

and with a duty of care that we balance nostalgia for the Colonial Theatre’s history (your memories, truly) against present and future needs.

Your understanding and patience as we grow accustomed to so many rapid fire changes together is so appreciated. Thank you very much for standing beside us as a member or a donor-contributor to the Colonial Theatre’s growth over the past year. FirstScienceonScreen®Event-Run Lola RunVia generous funding from the Coolidge Corner Theatre Foundation with support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation we hosted three Science on Screen films. Each was preceded by an introduction delivered by a scientist working in a field related to the film’s content. The 2017 National Evening of Science on Screen was Run Lola Run: the movie that marked the Colonial’s 1999 re-opening.

NewWingOfficiallyOpensforbusinessThis year the Colonial Theatre added thousands of square feet, two theatres, two concession stands, a rooftop deck and suite, a deluxe dressing room, five new restrooms, one three-stop elevator, 238 additional seats covered in velvet and Italian fabrics, and beer and wine. Our new wing is an historic endeavor, made possible through the vision of Tom Carnevale and Lauren Eustis of Carnevale Eustis Architects; the care-filled labor of CH&E Construction, Inc; and not least, the millions of dollars generously bestowed by individuals and foundations to facilitate this much-needed expansion. Though the work of fundraising for the campaign will continue beyond this fiscal year, the positive results of the additional programming space on film attendance, sales, and grosses are already clear.

During Sensory Friendly Screenings the theatre lights will remain on, the volume will be turned down, and our “no talking during the film” rule will not be enforced.
