Working with projections

A projection is an illusive, subtle and everywhere-present phenomenonprojection happens every time we do not own our integrity fully, every time we are not truly

honest to our own being, regardless if we are conscious of it or not.Projections in other words, happen all the time!

Page 3: Starbridge Centre Online Counselling Coursestarbridge.com.au/files/pdf/occ/1/5.pdfused for constructive and positive living. Dr. Ann Faraday: Dream Power p.143 ff Pearls aim in his

Working with projection is the cornerstone in all developmentNothing else is necessary for development, than identification and transformation of

projections.Working with projections

is the road to

Better relationshipsOvercoming emotions

Enlightenment. There is no difference in the subject matter regardless if we work with a beginner, that donot want truth, just more fun out of life, and the serious seeker, that wants truth all needs

to work with their projections.

If we could see through all our projections down to the last traces, our personality would be extended to cosmic dimensions.

The Law of projection (Formulated by C. G. Jung):Anything in the unconscious is projected!

If somebody exhibits a personality trait we ourself harbour unconsciously - and which welike We like this person.

If somebody exhibits a personality trait we ourselves harbour unconsciously - and whichwe dislike We dislike that person.

projection and learningIt is in fact the law of projection that makes Counselling and teaching possible

We can only learn from someone what we have projected on them!A way of recognising a projection emotionally and intellectually

1) Imagine this negative projection, "Ole" in front of you.2) Activate and experience to the fullest the feeling of resentment and negativity.3) Understand intellectually that these negative emotions are projected. Regardless that"Ole" does have these characteristics, they are also a projection.4) Try to find and feel these characteristics in yourself. "Ole" is gossiping/too arrogant/tootimid/flirting/etc. etc, you are telling everybody that John" is gossiping etc. You do notrecognise your own gossiping etc, because all your focus is on "Ole".

You have an area within yourself with hate. But because it is blocked off you do not know itis there, and because "Ole" is gossiping, you project the hate on to him.

If you overcome the barrier in yourself, and you energy-wise experiences your hiddenhate, it is a strong experience that will transform you.First and foremost you will find that your hate against Ole has disappeared, even if he is still gossiping.

projection and emotion:If there is emotion there is projection

This does not mean that if there is not emotion you agree with what the other does, but ifyou for example disagree, you will feel compassion, not Anger etc.

CautionThat you can see something does not mean that the client

also is ready to see it

Some times it is better to let people stay in their ignorance, their unconscious, tonot wake them up.

For example if they have a trauma, they may talk about it, but cannot see the full depth. You may be able to see the depth, but they can't. Chance is that they can't because it istoo early.

Other examples, people who are dying, but unwilling to face it as a reality. They may talk, mentally seemingly clear and open, but if you check there is a closed door. This type of situation has to be treated with utmost care, with the professional acting as agentle midwife, allowing the realisation to come slowly, in waves, suddenly or in whateverform it can happen from within.

How can we work with projections?

Different people will benefit from different ways of workingIn this course we will teach quite a few ways of working with the unconscious.

You have already met wow to work with the unconscious via resonance

DreamsBoth in a Jungian way and in Gestalt therapy

Body languageLater we will teach you

TarotCounselling based on the zodiac and planets, tarot, the law of synchronicity and resonance

Use of musicDharma/Right livingPositive affirmations

In the other certificate courses yet other techniques will be taught.

GESTALT THERAPY

Key points: A Gestalt is a pattern, a configuration, a figure and a background. Gestalt psychology describes how

Our perceptions is organised in figure/ground pairs.

Homeostasis is the concept of all living being's automatic search for and maintenance ofinner and outer equilibrium.

Page 7: Starbridge Centre Online Counselling Coursestarbridge.com.au/files/pdf/occ/1/5.pdfused for constructive and positive living. Dr. Ann Faraday: Dream Power p.143 ff Pearls aim in his

The holistic doctrine states that the human being is a unified organism, that all aspects areconnected, and that the whole is more than the sum of the parts. The hot chair technique. Developed by Jacob Moreno in psychodrama, but made famousby Perls.Building on the gestalt psychology of figure / ground, the client is asked to have animagined encounter with whatever person or aspect he has an unfinished business, with.

Here and now.Perls very much emphasises the concept of HERE AND NOW. Even if the material worked with seemingly is from the past, the emotional releases andtransformations seen in the hot chair are acted out in the now.

Perls rejected any notionOf an unconscious mind

Perls rejected any notion of an unconscious Mind, preferring to think of the personality asa rubber ball floating and turning in the water, so that only one portion is visible at a time. The Gestalt therapist works with the portion that is visible in the context of the moment. So instead of trying to trace a symptom back to some childhood trauma, as is done forexample in psychoanalysis, he always asks the person what it is doing for him in the hereand now.

Dr. Ann Faraday: Dream Power p.143 ff

Page 8: Starbridge Centre Online Counselling Coursestarbridge.com.au/files/pdf/occ/1/5.pdfused for constructive and positive living. Dr. Ann Faraday: Dream Power p.143 ff Pearls aim in his

Actual behaviour, not traumasPerls had no time for tracing back associations to some dubious infantile trauma, butconcentrated, like Jung, on discovering buried treasure within the personality. ... Hefocused his attention on actual behaviour in a group situation - facial expression, tone ofvoice, posture, gesture, reactions to other members, and so on - in order to discover theholes in a person's present personality. These holes, said Perls, have been caused by therejection of certain parts of the personality in order to avoid pain. So the task of thetherapist is to concentrate on what the person is avoiding in his present existence, helphim act out painful situations and reintegrate the alienated parts of the personality into hislife.

Dr. Ann Faraday: Dream Power p.143 ff

Top dog and UnderdogPerls calls topdog and underdog the two clowns of the personality, constantly acting outtheir self - torture game beneath the level of conscious awareness. We have a topdog andunderdog for each specific conflict, so whenever a conflict is sparked off by some present

Page 9: Starbridge Centre Online Counselling Coursestarbridge.com.au/files/pdf/occ/1/5.pdfused for constructive and positive living. Dr. Ann Faraday: Dream Power p.143 ff Pearls aim in his

problem or event in life, the two clowns emerge and start their self - torture game. Bothstrive for control, and it is a battle to the death, dissipating all the energy which should beused for constructive and positive living.

Dr. Ann Faraday: Dream Power p.143 ff

Pearls aim in his work is beautifully described in his Gestalt Prayer:

I am Iand you are you

I'm not in this world to live up to your expectations. And you're not in this world to live up to mine.

I is IAnd you are you.

If we happen to meet it is fineIf not there is nothing to do about it

Fritz Perls

Simple - radical - true - not often adhered to!

Gestalt therapy and dreamsIntegration

Short dreamsOn the whole, Perls preferred to work with short dreams as they are less confusing thanlong ones, and he insisted that even a half remembered dream fragment could be enoughto start off the creative process of opening up the personality.

Perls saw the dream as an added bonus in the form of an existential message, which tellsus exactly where we are in relation to ourselves and to the world at the present time. Whereas Freud called the dream the royal road to the unconscious, Perls called it theroyal road to integration because he saw in it the possibility of reclaiming the lost parts ofthe personality and becoming whole.

Dr. Ann Faraday: Dream Power p.143 ff.

Gestalt therapy and dreamsEvery image in the dream, is an alienated portion of the selfHis method of dealing with dreams is to regard every image in the dream, whether human, animal, vegetable, or mineral, as an alienated portion of the self, which we have projectedonto that image. The dreamer is asked to act the part of each image in turn and re-experience the events of the dream from the standpoint of each. Encounters are thenconducted between these images, and when they fight, the dreamer knows he has hit onsomething important. Whenever his Mind goes blank or he feels sleepy, he knows he istrying to avoid something. [...]As a first step Perls asked the dreamer to retell his dream in the present tense in order tobring it into the here-and-now and re-experience the actual feelings of the dream. When this took place in a group, Perls noted the facial expression, gestures, and so on of

Page 10: Starbridge Centre Online Counselling Coursestarbridge.com.au/files/pdf/occ/1/5.pdfused for constructive and positive living. Dr. Ann Faraday: Dream Power p.143 ff Pearls aim in his

the person as he recounted his dream, as these often provided clues to particularlyconflictual areas of the dream.

Dr. Ann Faraday: Dream Power p.143 ff.

Emotions are not a nuisancePerls wrote, Emotions are not a nuisance to be discharged. The emotions are the mostimportant motors of our behaviour: emotion in the widest sense - whatever you feel - thewaiting, the joy, and the hunger... Emotional excitement mobilises the muscles... You can'timagine Anger without muscular movement. You can't imagine joy, which is more or lessidentical with dancing, without muscular movement. In grief there is sobbing and crying, and in sex there are also certain movements, as you all know. And these muscles areused to move about, to take from the world, to touch the world, to be in contact, to be intouch. If these emotions are denied their proper physical expression, they lead, says Perls, to astate of anxiety in which the person becomes desensitised; his sensuous awareness ofsight, sound, taste, smell, and touch is dulled, and he becomes frigid. The purpose ofGestalt therapy is to restore such a robotised corpse to life.

Dr. Ann Faraday: Dream Power p.143 ff.

THE HOT CHAIR TECHNIQUEAND ROLE REVERSAL.

Nb. this technique looks simple, but it takes skills to do it so it does not get clumsy, so that the client stays authentic! These skills are only achieveable through hands-on practice.

1. Two chairs face each other.2. The client or protagonist sits in one chair, imaging whoever or whatever he is going towork with in the opposite chair.3. The client talks or expresses himself otherwise to the imagined, projected person in theempty chair.4. The dialogue must be in HERE AND NOW terms; not talking about the other person, butdirectly to him or her.5. At appropriate times the client is asked to reverse roles, to sit down in the empty chairbeing this other person, reacting and talking as this projection.6. At appropriate times he is asked to move back to his own chair, being himself again. These role reversals can go on for some time.7. When an appropriate depth and insight is achieved, the encounter is finalised, and theclient goes back to the group again.

Contraindications for use of The Hot chair technique

1: Do not use this technique on negative collective symbols

A YOGANIDRA, USING THE BREATHThis is not strictly speaking a Gestalt exercise,

But it is good to use in connection with or maybe as a precursor to this type of work

Repeat the "whole body" segment for a couple of minutes. Take care you synchronise your instruction

with the natural rhythm of the client.

Lie down comfortably, loosen any tightening clothing. Check again your body posture, liestraight and relaxed. Now, become aware of your breathing: How deep is it?How is its rhythm?Allow your Mind to be with the breathing. If you can, make the breathing deeper andslower, deeper and slower.A good connection between the different parts of the body and the breathing is achievedby the following instruction in the following order:

Imagine that when you breathe in, you fill your [body-part]with vitality and well being; When you breathe out, you breathe out any impurities

The toes on left footLeft footLeft ankleLeft calf-.Left kneeLeft thighLeft hip

Genital areaLeft buttockLeft side of abdomenLeft side of lower backLeft side of stomachLeft side of middle backLeft side of chestLeft side of upper back

A YOGANIDRA USING TENSION-RELAXATIONLie down comfortably, loosen any tightening clothing. Check again your body posture, liestraight and relaxed. Become aware of your breathing; if needed, make it slow and deep, slow and deep.

Now go with your awareness to the following body parts, slowly one part at a time, tense, relax, tense relax, tense, let go.

Some enchanted evening you're going to meet your soul mate, the perfect person who willmeet all your needs and fulfil all your dreams. Right?

Wrong!

This fantasy that songwriters and poets are so fond of perpetuating has its roots inmemories of the womb, where we were so secure andat one' with our mothers; it's nowonder we have hankered to return to that place all our lives. But, to put it quite brutally, itis a childish dream. And it is amazing we hang on to it so stubbornly in the face of reality.

Nobody, whether it's your current mate or some dreamed-of partner in the future, has anyobligation to deliver your happiness on a platter - nor could they even if they wanted to.Real love comes not from trying to solve our neediness by depending on another, but bydeveloping our own inner richness and maturity. Then we have so much love to give thatwe naturally draw lovers towards us.

Osho Zen Tarot, Water: Emotions, The Dream

The Source is that you are afraid of your alonenessThis has been said again and again, down through the ages. All the religious people have been saying this: we come alone into the world, we go alone.all togetherness is illusory. The very idea of togetherness arises because we are alone, and the aloneness hurts. We want to drown our aloneness in relationship...That's why we become so much involved in love. Try to see the point. Ordinarily you thinkyou have fallen in love with a woman or with a man because she is beautiful, he is

Page 15: Starbridge Centre Online Counselling Coursestarbridge.com.au/files/pdf/occ/1/5.pdfused for constructive and positive living. Dr. Ann Faraday: Dream Power p.143 ff Pearls aim in his

beautiful. That is not the truth. The truth is just the opposite: you have fallen in lovebecause you cannot be alone. You were going to fall. You were going to avoid yourselfsomehow or other. And there are people who don't fall in love with women or men - thenthey fall in love with money. They start moving into money or into a power trip, theybecome politicians. That too is avoiding your aloneness. If you watch man, if you watchyourself deeply, you will be surprised - all your activities can be reduced to one singlesource. The source is that you are afraid of your aloneness. Everything else is just anexcuse. The real cause is that you find yourself very alone.

Osho Zen Tarot, Water: Emotions, The Dream

Dreams might be compared with a radar"The mechanism in dreams might be compared with a radar, which constantly - regardlessthe level of development is scanning the personality, psychologically as well as bodily, inorder to reveal unbalances or one-sidedness in an attempt to correct and adjust mattersthat are not conductive .

Jes Bertelsen. Droemme Chakrasymboler og meditation

Working with dreamsWorking with dreams over a longer period, you will some day realise that what is normallyconsidered for reality and awake life, in its essence is the same as a "dream" - projectionsof your own energy; a covering up and symbolising of WHAT IS.From the perspective of the normal ego consciousness, the more dull-minded visions ofthe dream looks exactly like a lower and more unconscious existence - as a dream. From the perspective of a meditative, higher consciousness, the normal egoconsciousness and daily life looks like a lower and more unconscious way of existence - inother words like a dream.

Jes Bertelsen.

The exceptional position of dreamsAll dreams, even the simplest dream is the attempt from the Self to provide a wholeness,

to integrate and to make the person whole.

Dreams are always attempting authenticity that you manifest who you are, unconditionally.

If you read your dreams through from one year back and up to the present, you will get acomplete and reliable picture of EVERYTHING in your personality, and also anunderstanding of - in more or less general terms - in what direction your life is moving.Gradually, you may be able to detect and recognise the inner guidance.

As a general rule, significant changes and improvements in an inner development process, will first manifest itself in dreams, and then in meditation, and finally in the ego

consciousness.

The real progress in the client can be measured; The dreams have to change character.

Page 16: Starbridge Centre Online Counselling Coursestarbridge.com.au/files/pdf/occ/1/5.pdfused for constructive and positive living. Dr. Ann Faraday: Dream Power p.143 ff Pearls aim in his

Dreams always suggest only those changes that the client is able to do and assimilatewithout entering psychotic conditions at the given time.

It is directly possible to contact the dream via certain areas in the body - the attitude in thedream will directly reflect the bodily position of the client.

The exceptional position of dreamsPeople who can work together are dreaming about each other. This will always ensuregood results, as there will be a channel via the unconsciousness.

Dreams that are dreamt immediately prior to starting on counselling or psychotherapy canbe very significant pointers to the process and outcome of that therapy...

A dream has a compensatory function, even if you are not working with it or rememberingit.

By working with dreams, working with integrating their messages in daily life, the growth orrecovery process can be speeded up.

Dreams from the same night are displaying the same theme, even if they appear verydifferent. The theme in the initial dream might be from a deep level, and the following dream mightdeal with the same theme from a more superficial level.

In order to gauge whether a dream is ultimately good or bad, go for the feeling present inthe dream, and not the feeling after waking up.

CompensationThe "remnant" from the day before.

Every dream, even very powerful and collective dreams, has a part that links it withspecific experiences or moods from the previous day.

This can be a person, an intuition, a strong thought or a feeling etc. that associatively isinter weaved in the dream picture. It can also be distant childhood memories, birth traumasymbolism or ancient, collective experiences.

The purpose of the dream work will accordingly be to try to understand these dreamimages as a comment, a correction or as a supplement to the experience from yesterday;the dream acts as the compensative and balancing other polarity to the unconsciousaspect that was not in a balance yesterday.

The content in dreamsThe content in a dream is the total scenery: people, trees, animals, cities, landscapes, furniture, season of the year, time of the day, weather, etc.

Page 17: Starbridge Centre Online Counselling Coursestarbridge.com.au/files/pdf/occ/1/5.pdfused for constructive and positive living. Dr. Ann Faraday: Dream Power p.143 ff Pearls aim in his

The feeling or the mood, the "atmosphere" can either be only vaguely presented, or it canbe very clear, cut in forms as specific things, people, etc.

The power spot. Most dreams can be condensed to a single scenery or symbol which hasthe strongest emotional energy; or there is something in a particular image that puzzlesyou, and which you are not able to let go of. This is the "power spot" in the dream, and it islikely the part it is most important to work with and to integrate. When the power spot or essence is found, the next step is to boil it down to an intensefeeling or emotion, or to a very short sentence, like as an example a message in atelegram. With this "key", try to look for an identical feeling in other situations in your past and in yourdaily life. With this method, some of the incomprehensible language in dreams may openup and reveal its meaning.

Everything subconscious is projected

C. G. JungWhen we do not acknowledge an aspect of ourselves, the aspect becomes

subconscious.

Dreams and the three psychological levels of consciousness1) The psychology of polaritiesNo contact between the various aspects or parts in the dream reflects a black-and-whitepsychology.The centre core in the psychology of polarities is "the shadow". Personal development can start with the lowest level, the shadow; but it is important toraise the total psychology, to raise the darkest or lowest parts of ones psychology and atthe same time raise the consciousness up to higher levels of consciousness throughmeditation.Sigmund Freud describes the psychology of polarities;Carl Gustav Jung describes the ying-yang psychology.

2) The yinq-yang psychologyHere the individual begins to understand and feel that anything has its hidden polarity ornature embedded, and that even something that is considered negative or wrong can leadto something good, something he can learn and develop from. When the dreams with contact between the various elements begin it means that higherlevels of psychology are manifesting.Ying-yang psychology experiences another person more as an energy field than as aseparate, solid substance or "thing".Falling in love in the ordinary sense is related to a psychology of polarities. From theperspective of a ying-yang psychology, falling in love means that you lose 50% of yourself.

In love, as distinct from falling in love, there is a meeting between two individuals, a union. There is no loss of oneself.

3) The psychology of OnenessThis is the highest form of psychology. The ego is suspended, when one is on this level

Page 18: Starbridge Centre Online Counselling Coursestarbridge.com.au/files/pdf/occ/1/5.pdfused for constructive and positive living. Dr. Ann Faraday: Dream Power p.143 ff Pearls aim in his

the ego isn't there any longer, and there is no duality between inner and outer, andbetween you and me. There is unity with everything; even in a ying-yang psychology thereis an organic distinction. In illumination the balance between subject and object is so perfect that the consciousnessflies away from the attachment to duality.

A self realised person who is 100% present in every situation do not have dreams, he orshe is 100% awake, his Mind is 100% present - also when he is asleep.

Astral dreamingThe general guidelines we have just gone through are meant for normal dreams, wherethe dream, more or less hidden, is about aspects of ourselves. These guidelines havenothing to do with astral dreams, it is important to distinguish.

In astral dreaming things are more vivid; and the individual/dreamer will start the dreamwhere he actually is as himself, as an example while lying in his own bed.

If you open yourself prematurely into the astral level in dreams, which means before youhave a good insight into your own shadow aspects; you might have terrible nightmares.Lucid dreamingIn lucid dreaming the dreamer is being tested

The dream ego can be actively present to such a degree that he or she starts to realisethat he is dreaming.

This is "lucid dreaming": the dreamer is fully aware that he is dreaming, and more than that- he is aware that he is able to direct and control consciously what is going to happen.

If an individual wakes up in a dream and knows that she/he is dreaming, it is luciddreaming.

Lucid dreaming will occur gradually if there is a meditative practise.

In lucid dreaming, the person can consciously move towards inner guidance, his or herspiritual purpose, to the source of love or light etc., thus accelerating personal and spiritualdevelopment.

Lucid dreaming means that the person is being "tested" by the Divine. There are several techniques to train lucid dreaming, but the risk is that the traininginterferes and destroys the mechanism of compensation crucial for mental and emotionalhealth, so be careful!

A purpose in spiritual development is accordingly to have continuity of consciousness, alsoin deep sleep.

WISDOMIn a dream you meet a wise man, woman, or maybe even a wise animal.A wisdom dream tells that you already are in contact with wise persons, and that yourpsyche has reached a level of flexibility and openness where it is possible for the wisdomto manifest.

Page 19: Starbridge Centre Online Counselling Coursestarbridge.com.au/files/pdf/occ/1/5.pdfused for constructive and positive living. Dr. Ann Faraday: Dream Power p.143 ff Pearls aim in his

The ego is not understood as the centre of the personality; the wisdom has always beenthere, but now there are moments of balance, clarity and peace.

Wisdom dreams offers:

1) Apprenticeship.Start a circulation between teacher and pupil. The teacher can only teach the pupil whatthe pupil has projected onto the teacher!2) Power or energy.3) A technique, most often a meditation technique.

Dreams with wisdom are clear. The message will be underÂstood. The message is: Do asyou are told, also if it is very literally! These dreams can reach many years ahead in time, often in seven-year cycles.

SymbolsTo awaken ideas sleeping in our consciousness

By means of suggestionA symbol can always be studied from an infinite number of points of view; and each thinkerhas the right to discover in the symbol a new meaning corresponding to the logic of hisown conceptions. As a matter of fact, symbols are precisely intended to awaken ideas sleeping in ourconsciousness. They arouse a thought by means of suggestion, and thus cause the truth, which lies hidden in the depths of our spirit to reveal itself. In order that symbols could speak, it is essential that we should have in ourselves thegerms of the ideas, the revelation of which constitutes the mission of the symbols. But norevelations whatever are possible if the Mind is empty, sterile and inert.

Oswald Wirth, here from Ouspenski: A new Model of the Universe

Dream symbolsThe ego psychology. Wild and primitive animals (Reptiles, insects, frogs etc)

The most distant parts of your instinctual psychology. These animals belong to the autonomous nervous system, and as such they represent themost primitive parts of our instinctual psychology.Reptiles and snakes come from the collective unconsciousness; they are so collective thatthey also often represent an element of wisdom (˜the totality'). Dreams from the collectivesubconsciousness can be just as informative (but not as high) as dreams from the superconscious
