Dear Friends

I remember visiting the Bronte ParsonageMuseumin Haworth to view the Methodist Art Collection thatwasbeingexhibited. Onepaintingwasset inadimlylit room, among precious Bronte artefacts and itwasn’t until you moved across the room and stoodopposite the painting that you noticed it.

The effect of the lighting upon it was stunning andbreath-taking – it took me completely by surpriseand was what I can only describe as a ‘God-

moment’. You may remember the painting from your studies last year;“Untitled – Pentecost”. The artist, J Brokenshire, wanted “a sense of abird hovering” and a dark background was important in providing acontrast to highlight this.

Sometimes you have to take a step back to admire a painting. It is thenthat you can see the full details of the artist’s impression of the subject, the variety of tone and texture, especially if it is an oil painting such asthis one.

Howdowe see pictures in theBible?Accounts throughout theBible fireour imagination and place us in the story. The book of Genesis gives usa picture of God’s creation through the use of words. Jesus spoke topeople in ways they could understand by using ‘picture language’ (seeMatthew 5: 14-16 “you are the light of the world…”). There is a lot ofimagery in the Bible – the book of Revelation is particularly vivid anddescriptive.

If wehad to paint a picture of our church, what stylewould it be in? Whatmaterial would we use? What story would wewant to tell? What wouldbe in the detail? Would anyone be able to understand it?As we approach Lent, let’s step back and intentionally observe the‘picture language’ around us.

Reverend Ann Fox, Minister 3

What do we say to others about our church? Howwelcomingare we? Are there ways in which we can support each other?Where does Christ’s light shine? What do we say about ourdiscipleship inChrist? Of his offering on the cross and the joyof his resurrection?

Take amoment to ‘look at the painting’ and to study the detail- look for the stories that are being told around us and in ourcommunity. You may be surprised by a ‘God-moment’!

When I survey the wondrous cross,on which the Prince of Glory died,my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride.

6 A Plea from Harrogate Homeless

We have seen a reduction in our donations over recent months butas you know, both the hostel and Springboard rely on donateditems to last the whole year. Below I’ve made a list of muchneeded items, but of course anything is welcome, particularly non-perishable food items that we can store.

Tinned meat products Cooking oilCooking sauces Tinned vegetablesToilet rolls Cleaning productsDeodorants (male/female) ShampooHair conditioner Shaving gelDisposable razors ToothpasteToothbrushesCondiments and sauces (ketchup, brown sauce etc)

As a general rule, I suggest to people that anything they use withintheir home, the hostel needs too!

I hope you can help with this request, if you need any furtherinformation please do not hesitate to contact me.

Gardening news 9

A big thank you to everyone whohelped the last time to tidy the Churchgarden. We did this late November andsomebody was on our side as it was alovely bright sunny morning. The bulbs are starting to show, thankyou to the Brigades who planted them,so in the Spring, fingers crossed weshould have a splash of colour. We have moved the grasses from the bottom border to the arealeading onto the grass at the side of the Church, and they seemto have settled in well to their new surroundings.A new panel of fencing had to be bought, as we think somebody

reversed into it, ececting it was a job for themen, it just needs another coat of paint, ajob in the spring.Plans for the future, in the area at the bottomof the car park, we hope to plant up with bigbold flowers to replace the grasses. Thesmall border by the fencing we are going tomake into an Alpine area, so watch thisspace.

I have managed to find a bird bath (this is in memory of BettyCrooks) and once the weather improves it will be securely placedin the memorial garden under a cherry tree. All I can say is roll on spring, so we can get back into the garden, and enjoy it as we hope you do.Anne

A great journey starts with a single step. 15

We meet on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month,7pm-9pm in church.

It’s been a real honour to meet with these youngpeople as they continue their journeys of faith. In December we took the youngpeople to St Georges Crypt in Leeds for the contemporary carols service, whichwas a great alternative service, we followed it up with a cheeky McDonalds. Theend of our session was an old school Christmas Party with traditional party games,it was a lovely evening of fellowship to end the term. We restarted on 15th Januarywith the challenging topic of “Why do bad things happen to good people”. Anevening like that really demonstrates how great a group we have as everyone wasable to express their opinions and we had some great conversations.

NewMembersWe are looking to let as many people know about this new venture as we possiblycan so if you know a young person in year 7 or above, please tell them about usand encourage them to come down or contact us by email [email protected].

Help wanted! In order to provide Project B members with a broad experience of faith and life, and to give them the input they ask for, with the subject matters close to them, weare looking for helpers. We’re not just looking for people to lead or help on aSunday night (although if you’d like to we’d be thrilled!), we’d also appreciate anyhelp with ideas for ways to expand the experience of projectb, whether it is gettingus involved with events, ways in which we can engage with circuit, or new topics tocover in our regular Sunday meetings. If you are interested in helping us we’re surewe’ll be able to find a way for you to help! Just speak to Mark, Vicki, or Dave oremail us at [email protected]. Also thank you to the peoplewho’ve kindly volunteered to help with preparing food – we’ll betaking you up on your offer!

Please pray for all involved, both young people and leaders, as welearn more about God together.

16 Friday night activitiesNever a dull a moment.

As always every Friday is a hive of activity (andnoise!).

It is with real pleasure that we are able to announce the arrival of Chris andLucy’s baby. Morris Paul McMahon arrived in the early hours of Boxing Daymorning at 8lb 1oz. We are so delighted for them.

The first term of this year ended with our now annual Christmas Party Night. It was a fantastic night and was as ever very well supported by parents andmembers of the church family. Bringing our usual brand of organised chaoswith a Christmas feel. If you were there thank you very much for supportingit, if you weren’t there we hope to see you there next year!!

This term is always a unique one due to the efforts put in by our youngpeople ready for their uniformed competitions.

We have already seen an increase in numbers this year with two newmembers having joined in 2017 which is a real joy.

Anchors & Explorers’ topic this half term is 'Weather'. We have alreadylooked at rainbows and Noah, wind and Jesus calming the storm, and we aregoing to move onto looking at winter weather. We have also welcomed anew starter, so our little group is gradually growing.

Juniors continue to explore and learn. We have introduced some new games, which maintain the energy of the group. In the run up to Christmas, ValRogers came down to help us make some Christmas Biscuits.

Company section have been working on map skills, learning co-ordinates,understanding map symbols and beginning preparation work for anexpedition.

Senior Boys completed looking at communication, and are preparing to run asection evening for the juniors, which is not small thing to ask of the young

people.

Brigader & Senior Girls have started a new topic entitled “Safe andSound”. So far we’ve thought about “what makes a woman” anddiscussed the qualities of the following women in the bible: Sarah, Mary,Martha, Esther, Elizabeth, Naomi and Ruth.

The band continues to progress and at the moment we are learning newtunes, reviving old ones, and developing a new move for the display. Wewould like to thank the band members for their willingness to committhemselves and their time to the various events we are asked to performat, notably Remembrance Day and Boys' Brigade Founder's Day, we hada lovely informal evening in early December. We now look ahead toperforming at the display and other events in the pipeline for nearer thesummer.

Get Alexie to GhanaWe wanted to add our thanks to the church family for your support ofAlexie and her large target. We’re thrilled to say that she has met heroriginal target and very proud that she’s continuing to work hard tofundraise to be able to donate to the event as well as to a local charity inGhana.

Upcoming EventsSaturday 28th January is our first coffee morning of 2017, followed by 11th

March, we hope you’ll support them.Saturday 4th February is BB Yorkshire county battalion table tenniscompetition.

Prayer PointsThank you for your prayers! Please continue to prayfor the wellbeing of our young people and staff, as

Page 18: Starbeck Methodist Church The Link€¦ · 8 Funtime! PARK GROVE and STARBECK METHODIST KNIT 'n' NATTER GROUP meet at 1:30pm on the first and third Monday afternoon of each calendar

many of them journey through their own difficult times. We also pray that ournumbers continue to increase and that our Fridays continue to be a hive ofenergy and excitement, where our young people feel safe and able to exploretheir own faith.

NewMembersWe need your help as ever, we are always looking for new members so if youknow a young person between the ages of 4 and 17 who would enjoy being amember of Boys’ or Girls’ Brigade please tell them more about us andencourage them to come down or contact us by email.([email protected]). If you know of an opportunity for us topromote The Brigades either by putting up posters or attending events pleaselet us know. Together let’s see our Brigades grow and develop.

Help wanted! As our numbers are growing so is our need for helpers. We’re not just lookingfor people to help on a Friday night (although if you’d like to we’d bethrilled!), we’d also appreciate one-off help with fundraising, recruitment, coffee mornings, mini bus driving, and ideas for Friday night sessions. Ifyou’ve got a skill or an interest and are interested in helping us we’re surewe’ll be able to find a way for you to help! Just speak to any of our leaders oremail us at [email protected] .

In the past people have helped us by organising visits such as going to the firestation and Pets at Home, or by coming down on the occasional Friday todemonstrate a specific skill such as baking, nail care etc. These evenings are afantastic opportunity for our leaders to be able to enjoy learning alongsidethe children rather than always leading from the front.

If there’s any way that you think the Brigades might be able to help you or acause close to your heart please get in touch and we’ll see what we can do!

thank you and editors last word 19Thank you to all the Brigade staff for a wonderful Christmas party. Itwas so nice to see all the children having fun and for all the time theygive to Brigades.God bless you all as you teach the children to seek service and followChrist.

So, wer'e nearing the end of January 2017, Christmas haspassed into memory and the evenings seem to be getting lighteras we move into Spring.I can't believe how quickly Ann has made Starbeck her Church, she's a natural and I look forward to exploring faith with her goingforward, a quick question, is 6 months too soon to start heckling? The new year has also brought changes to Church life, Jennyand George moved to Lincolnshire to be closer to family andwhilst we miss them dearly, its great to hear that they havesettled in and are enjoying life in their new community.Tea 'N' Chat has taken a sabbatical but it's great that Chris hastaken over the reins of refreshments after services and Sarah willcontinue to contribute Lemon drizzle and now victoria sponge ifthe speed in which it disappeared on Sunday is a fair reflection ofits appeal. With all this change, I feel we need to do something with thecontent of the Link, This is the 7th year that I've been editing thechurch magazine so it could do with a change, so what so youwant to see? Does anyone do the Sudoku that I include everyedition? There has been talk of a freecycle style page where wecan highlight items we no longer need but others would benefitfrom. Let me have your suggestions for content to improve ourChurch magazine.God BlessSimon
