Starbeck Methodist Church
The Link
June - July Issue 290
Dear Friends
We have come to the last item in our explorationof the theme ‘Day byDay – exploring the rhythmof mission and discipleship’. We haveconsidered ‘Pray’, ‘Read and Reflect’, ‘Givethanks’, and now end with:
‘Keep Silence’
I am writing this the morning after our Starbeck‘Thy Kingdom Come’ event, a ‘global wave ofprayer’, during the time betweenAscension and
Pentecost. Hosted by Starbeck Methodists, Life Destiny Churchand St Andrew’s, we gathered together to pray that families, friends and neighbours come to know Jesus Christ.
If youwereunable to come, youmissedagreat evening– I canonlydescribe it as a ‘Spirit filled’ time of worship and prayer. We tendto think of prayer as being a time of silence – and it can be – butlast night showed that it can also be the complete opposite; it wasexciting! We shared in fellowship over coffee and a chatter, worship with the band, corporate prayer and teaching, followed byjust under an hour of prayer stations. There was a lot of creativityin art and beadwork, reflective activities, praying aloud, ‘tastingprayers’, Bible group, and if youwanted complete silenceweusedthe church lounge with a water fountain and candles, Bibles, andthe prayer book. And therewas news of a newChurches TogetherAlpha course coming up (watch this space).
‘Keeping silence’ is about coming to God in prayer, readingscripture, being aware of his presence and listening for what Godmay be saying to you. Prayer can be corporate (all of us prayingtogether), which can be very powerful, and it is also personal; apersonal relationship between you and God. It may take sometime to find out how best to pray and what works for you.
So, I invite you to explore prayer: creatively with art, sitting quietlywith a Bible, hymn book, or devotional book, prayerful music
2 Reverend Ann Fox Minister
Reverend Ann Fox, Minister 3through classical, traditional or contemporary worship songsand hymns, or a nature walk, a prayer walk around the town. Inwhatever you choose to do, be with God, spend time in God’spresence, talk to Jesus, let the power of the Holy Spirit breatheupon you.

In the words of the ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ song, by Pete JamesandHarvey Jessop (also on the website): “we are watching, weare waiting, we are hoping, we are praying, we’re believing, letyour kingdom come.
Father in heaven, your name is holyYours is the kingdom, the power and the glory,God of salvation, unfold your storyYours is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever, Amen.”
(see Matthew 6: 8-10) God bless, Ann

LEPROSY MISSION SPONSOREDWALKSATURDAY 2 JUNE
This year the walk is 4.75 miles. It will be a round walk starting at Birstwith car park.We will walk to Hampsthwaite which is 3.5 miles taking in a view of Birstwith Hall.On reaching Hampsthwaite we can go to Sophie’s Coffee Shop and anyone wishing toleave us there can either get a bus back to Harrogate or a bus back to Birstwith to gettheir car. Those who wish to finish the walk it is another 1.25 miles up the river sideback to Birstwith.
Those who wish to go by bus please meet at Stand 5 at Harrogate bus station to catchthe 1.30 Pateley Bridge bus so we can get off at Birstwith.
Anyone coming by car Birstwith car park is situated next to the school which is just offthe main road to the right if you are coming via Hampsthwaite. If you come via BurntYates you need to drive over the river bridge at Birstwith, continue up the village andthe car park is at the top on the left hand side just before you reach the main road. Iwould like to start the walk at 2pm.
When starting the walk we will walk down the road before going up a field. This is theonly hill that is a bit steep and should take about 10 to 15 minutes to get to the top. There is only one stile. We will walk up a road to Swinithwaite but this is a gentleclimb (more of a slope!) and not very far.
If you would like to sponsor us there will a sponsor form onthe Church notice board. It will be £5 per family to walk, all the money going to the Leprosy Mission.
If you want any further details do come and see me.
The Leprosy Mission is very grateful for your generosity insupporting the work they do to make the lives of leprosysufferers so much better and showing God’s love.
