The story of IKEA began in 1943 in the village ofAgunnaryd, Sweden, when its founder was just17 years old. Over the past six decades it hasgrown into a major retail experience with stores in44 countries around the world generating annualsales of more than 21.5 billions euros.

IKEA has become known around the world forproviding a huge range of furniture and homedécor focused on good design and functionalityat low prices.

The group's expansion plans include the openingof seven stores involving an investment of 660 million euros. Currently IKEA has three storesin Portugal, one of these is the 36,000 square-metre anchor store in the Inter IKEA Centre atLeca Palmeira, Matosinhos in northern Spain.The impressive 100,000 square-metre modernmall, which is owned by IKEA, boasts manystores and restaurants.

Standby Power

As part of its dedication to quality and service, IKEAhas made it a point to install large generator sets atthis location to prevent utility outages frominconveniencing its customers or interrupting the flowof business. IKEA turned to Cummins PowerGeneration for help in providing standby powersystems that will keep the lights on and keep thecheck-out lines moving in the event of a power outage.

Cummins Portuguese distributor, Electro CentralVulcanizadora (ECV) fought off competition from CATand Perkins to secure the order. ECV managed theproject, which included the installation of threeC1250D5A generator sets powered by KTA 38 G9engines and one C1675D5A powered by a KTA 50G8 engine. Power requirement was 3 x 1250 kVA and1 x 1675kVA. The automatic power system willoperate for 50 hours a year and is capable ofoperating 24/7/365.
