Standards Norway
• A private and independent non-profit member organization
• Established in 2003 – with roots back to 1923
• Develops standards for most fields • The national member of Norway in
CEN and ISO • Employs 75 persons • Certified according to ISO 9001
(quality) and ISO 14001(environment)

Standards Norway’s mandate
• Develop and have the exclusive right to adopt and publish Norwegian Standards (Norsk Standard is a registered trade mark)
• Provide infrastructure and maintain rules for standardisation work • Take care of Norwegian interests and duties in international standardisation work
(CEN and ISO) • Establish and run standardisation committees and working groups • Carry out enquiry and formal vote on proposals for new work items and new
standards • Adopt all European standards (EN) as Norwegian Standards (NS-EN) • Adopt foreign and international standards as Norwegian Standards based on
customers’/stakeholders’ needs • Inform the market about standards and standardisation activities • Take care of marketing and sale of standards and related products through the sales
company (Standard Online)

• description of a product, a system or a process • a suggested alternative, but other options are possible • made by stakeholders in need for system and regulations in the market • are voluntary to use

Standards

Standards are used as: • instructions for producing products and services • descriptions to fulfil directives, and (national) laws and regulations • specifications in commercial trade • regulations for testing • regulations for certification and accreditation −Certification – the provision by an independent body of written assurance (a certificate)
that the product, service or system in question meets specific requirements. − Accreditation – the formal recognition by an independent body, generally known as an
accreditation body, that a certification body it operates according to international standards.

When are standards used?
More than 95 % of all Norwegian Standards adopted annually are of European or international origin

• Petroleum industry • Offshore cranes • Geographic information/Geomatics • Automatic vehicle and equipment
identification • Concrete • Thermal performance and energy use • Steel and aluminium • Buildings and civil engineering works • Facility management • Water quality • Innovation management • Terminology • Environmental management • Marine environment protection • Fisheries and aquaculture

Who is making the standards?
Experts (stakeholders): • Decides which standards to be
developed • Managing the standardisation
committees • Decides the content Standardisation organisations: • Infrastructure for standardisation
work • Secretariat for standardisation
projects • Owns and publishes the standards • Managing the rules for
standardisation

SN/K 32 follows and participate in the work of:
• CEN/TC 19 Gaseous and liquid fuels, lubricants and related products of
petroleum, synthetic and biological origin • CEN/TC 335 Solid biofuels • CEN/TC 343 Solid recovered fuels • CEN/TC 383 Sustainably produced biomass for energy applications • CEN/TC 408 Project Committee – Biomethane for use in transport and injection
in the natural gas grid • CEN/TC 411 Bio-based products • ISO/TC 238 Solid biofuels • ISO/TC 248 Sustainable criteria for bioenergy • ISO/TC 255 Biogas

Example of standards developed
ISO 17225 series: With the ISO 17225 series, ISO is preparing almost 60 International Standards for solid biofuels on graded wood pellets, graded wood briquettes, graded wood chips, graded non-woody pellets, thermally treated and densified biomass fuels, etc. It comprises definition and classification standards as well as standards for chemical and mechanical testing. A standard on sampling methodology is also included as a necessary building block for accommodating certification and various schemes of credit accounting. An example: EN ISO 17225-4:2014 Solid biofuels -- Fuel specifications and classes -- Part 4: Graded wood chips

Aims to: • facilitate the sustainable production, use and trade of bioenergy; • enable users to identify areas for continual improvement in the
sustainability of bioenergy; • facilitate e.g. business-to-business communication. Refer to: • CEN ISO/TS 14067:2014 Greenhouse gases - Carbon footprint of
products - Requirements and guidelines for quantification and communication (ISO/TS 14067:2013)
• Principle −Criterion − Indicator
