Rev. Dr. Frank Dukes

Reverend Dr. Frank Dukes was born in Fairfield, AL in 1930 in a community called Annisburg. A product of the Fairfield Public School System, most notably the renowned Fairfield Industrial High School, Dukes was a scholar, and a leader. He moved to Detroit, Michigan, and worked in the Chrysler automobile plant. Dukes returned to Birmingham and enrolled in Miles College, where he quickly became a popular student leader. Frank was elected S. G. A. President for the 1961-62 academic year, and, with the support of then president Dr. L. H. Pitts, immediately began galvanizing students to get involved and eradicate segregation.

He became part of the movement to de-segregate all of the department stores in Birmingham, including all the stores in Metro Birmingham. Their group and its’ supporters created the first and only successful boycott of Birmingham merchants, cleverly calling it a “selective Buying Campaign”. The Selective Buying Campaign resulted in the coming of Dr. King to Birmingham, and the rest as they say is history.
