These are some descriptions of Mr. Nathan Duenas who served in the United States Marine Corps. and spoke with the Mighty Rotary Club of West Sacramento on Friday. Nathan served through four tours in Iraq and two tours in Afghanistan in the years following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. As a Combat Engineer, Nathan was in the 50th truck to enter Iraq after the attacks. Nathan spent his time recalling the various stages of the war in Iraq. His taking notice at the ease with which the forces advanced upon entry into Iraq, the utter darkness over Baghdad during the initial onslaught. From there he discussed how, at first, attacks came from seemingly unorganized RPG attacks by Syrian insurgents (the beginning of Al-Qaeda). Nathan described the capture of Jessica Lynch by Iraqi forces and his unit’s role in her recovery. During tour two Nathan covered his role in the Battle of Fallujah and highlighted that around the end of his second tour is when the Al Qaeda insurgents began using IEDs to assault convoys of Coalition Armed Forces. In fact, Nathan himself was victim of three IED explosions, leading to his eventual transition to the Command Operating Center where he would oversee various operations and logistics in certain territories (in both Iraq and then Afghanistan). During his efforts in the C.O.C. Nathan never lost a soldier. One thing that was striking about Nathan’s presentation is the lack of presence and/or support citizens are providing for the soldiers upon return. This is striking, considering the role soldiers have in preserving the quality of life for us citizens. If you would like Nathan to teach you Jiu Jitsu, head over to Ralph Gracie Jiu Jitsu off Truxel in Sacramento. 4 Way Test

Of the Things we Think, Say or Do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?

2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3. Will it build GOODWILL and better FRIENDSHIPS?

4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all con‐cerned?

Martin Gorozzo and Thomas Radcliff were officially sworn into the club today. We were able to learn a bit about Martin’s ability to make his pa-tients his top priority and his great work in the community. Thomas told us about his upcoming wedding in November and his two year old pup at home. There is no doubt these two are going to make their mark on the Mighty Rotary Club of West Sacramento. Thanks to Dick Marshall for swearing them in and refusing to throw anyone under the bus through the whole process. Welcome to the Group gentlemen, looking forward to work-ing shoulder to shoulder!

MEMBERSHIP SPOTLIGHT

Jaclyn Powell’s guest John Barrett with President Heine. John was excited about the potential of joining the Mighty Rotary Club of West Sacramento. This year’s mem-bership efforts are really creating results. Let’s keep it going. The efforts are not lim-ited to the membership group but are part of each member’s ongoing support of the Group.
