From the observation deck of the ferry we saw breaching whales, a pod of orcas, a flock (yes, I know the proper term is p0od but they seemed more like a flock) or porpoises, and more. On the return trip home, we had dinner at my nep0hew’s restaurant near Se- attle with Rachel and her husband Jacob. Dear Friends, Much has occurred since the last newsletter from me. Elizabeth and I had a marvelous time traveling to and fro around southeast Alaska and to and fro, to and from the ferry we took at Bellingham, WA. We experienced in Ketchikan, Alaska, the reason it is identified as the wettest town in Alaska with in excess of (this is the average now!) 137 inches of rain per year. SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS

Ages 3 through Jr High 9:00 - 10:20 AM

(September through May) __________________________________________

The Sunday School is off and running to a good start for the year. We have been studying a few of the Miracles Jesus performed as well as the “Fruits of the Spirit.” The children are also having a good time learning new songs and the Lord’s Prayer.

We are gearing up soon for the holiday season and will be performing a short skit for their annual Christmas pro-gram complete with songs and plenty of ways they can express themselves regarding Jesus’ birth. Their annual Christmas play will be in the afternoon on Saturday, De-cember 17. At this time, we will also help to decorate the tree in the sanctuary and have dinner. This will be a fun and memorable event for all who are involved.

We have had steady growth since we began in Septem-ber and have had an attendance of at least fourteen chil-dren each week. They are various ages but blend well together and have a great time. As always, my “Dream Team” of teachers and helpers make this effort all very worthwhile.

There sill be no Sunday School on Sunday, November 27, to celebrate Thanksgiving. We hope everyone has a very Happy Thanksgiving!

-Renee Woslum, Sunday School Superintendent

ST. PAUL’S LUTHERAN FAMILY Mourns the loss of:

Kate Kane (1917-2011) who passed away at her home on Thursday, October 13, 2011, at the age of 94. A celebra-tion of life reception was held at St. Paul’s on Sunday, 10/23/11. Margo Lamb (David Harrell’s sister) passed away on Monday, 10/24/11. Service information was not available at this writing.

WILLA OLDHAM RAMSDEN

will turn 100-years-young on Sunday, November 27, 2011. She is the only child of William Henry and Martha Ellen Still-well and was born in a Mater-nity Hospital in San Diego, CA. She moved to Carson City in 1969 and joined St. Paul’s Lutheran Family in 2005.

Willa is a freelance journalist and feature writer. By 1971, when she wrote her last resume, she had already written 333 articles in 21 maga-zines and 9 newspapers, plus columns for 5 additional newspapers. She also handled pub-lic relations for various entities … from hotels to airlines … as well as script writing for several radio stations. I’d say she is definitely still going strong!

Though homebound, she says that no matter where we are living, there are things that each of us can do to help others. She believes that God gives every person certain knowledge and skills and that it is up to them to figure out what they are, and then do them … in His glory!

Willa has two more tips for us … have a good sense of humor and smile often.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ‘”MISS WILLA” You are a joy to all of us and we pray that

God will continue to bless you Today and all your days!

With love and blessings from your

St. Paul’s “family”

EDITOR’S NOTE: Willa was our very first Newsletter “Portrait” in March 2008. She was interviewed by Flo Bilderback, our St. Paul’s Roving Reporter.

Don’t forget to set your clocks

‘BACK’ one hour before retiring on Saturday night!

A QUESTION OF RELIGION by Ruth Adkinson (thanks to Gloria Schlapfer for sharing)

My kittens are all going to burn As soon as they are dead

‘Cause my daddy is a preacher And that’s just what he said.

He’s held a big revival At our church for more’n a week

And folks have come from everywhere To hear my daddy speak.

He talks about baptizing And he says out big and loud

That less you’re dipped in water You’re with the wicked crowd.

I took it mighty seriously And thought about my cat With her fluffy little kittens

Who’d not been baptized like that.

I took them to the barrel Where the rain leaks from the shed

But they scratched and fought me awful Though I told them what dad said.

So now I’m going to let ‘em live And die, and then they’ll learn

That just because they weren’t baptized They’ll simply have to burn!

JOKES THAT CAN

BE TOLD IN CHURCH (thanks to Wayne Kinder for sharing)

Two boys were walking home from Sunday School after hearing a strong preaching on the devil. One said to the other, “What do you think about all this Satan stuff?” The other boy replied, ‘Well, you know how Santa Claus turned out. It’s probably your dad!”

Attending a wedding for the first time, a little girl whis-pered to her mother, “Why is the bride dressed in white?” The mother replied, “Because white is the color of happi-ness, and today is the happiest day of her life.” The child thought about this for a moment and said, “So why is the groom wearing black?”

Three boys are in the school yard bragging about their fathers. The first boy says, “My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a poem, and they give him $50.” The second boy says, “That’s nothing. My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a song and they give him $100.” The third boy says, “I got you both beat. My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a sermon, and it takes eight people to collect the money!”

An elderly woman died last month. Having never mar-ried, she requested no male pallbearers. In her handwrit-ten instructions for her memorial service, she wrote, “They wouldn’t take me out while I was alive; I don’t want them to take me out when I’m dead!”

A police recruit was asked during the exam, “What would you do if you had to arrest your own mother?” He an-swered, “Call for backup!”

At Sunday School they were teaching how God created everything, including human beings. Little Johnny seemed especially intent when they told him how Eve was created out of one of Adam’s ribs. Later in the week his mother noticed him lying down as though he were ill, and she said, “Johnny, what is the matter?” Little Johnny responded, “I have a pain in my side. I think I’m going to have a wife!”

A Sunday School teacher asked her class why Joseph and Mary took Jesus with them to Jerusalem. A small child replied, “They couldn’t get a baby-sitter!”

THANKS BE TO GOD! HARVEST POTLUCK

On Stewardship Sunday, November 6 at 12:30 pm, please come as we gather in Friendship Hall for a Harvest Potluck lunch, and celebrate God’s bless-ings and generosity. This event is hosted by the Stewardship team.

Other events on Stewardship Sunday will take place during our worship services; think of Holy Conflagra-tion. More information will soon be available.

NOT ORDINARY TO EVERYONE

(submitted by Ken Beaton in honor of Veterans’ Day)

During WW II 16,000,000 Americans, men and women of the greatest gen-eration served their country to force the unconditional surrender of the Axis countries. Our nation’s price tag was 405,000 KIA, killed in action, or DOW, died of wounds. Each has a story worthy of being shared. Do not forget all the physical and mental wounds of those who returned home which lasted from days to a lifetime.

Everyone had their own private hell whether it was on the ground or in the air. First Lieutenant Charles R. Campbell was in the 725th Bomb Squadron, 451st Bomb Group, of the Eighth Air Force. His last letter home was No-vember 20, 1944, 21 days before he was KIA.

“It isn’t pleasant to see the realities of a war. I’m not saying this so you’ll worry more, because I know you must be worrying about me now. I just be-lieve I should let you know just what the score is. One of the finest chaps I know is a tail gunner on my buddy’s crew. They were flying right next to me yesterday, and I Dad, I’ve seen the worst an enemy can hand out to us, and I do know that praying helps. You don’t pray out loud because you’re too busy, but when you see it coming, you put a lot of trust in your Heavenly Father.

We came back yesterday with the hydraulic system for the flaps, landing gear and brakes shot out. We set her down safe, and no one had a scratch.

I look at it this way. There’s a little white piece of paper in operations that has my name on it and 35 squares. I’m sorta living right there on that piece of paper. Every time when I come back from a mission, no matter how rough it was or how much we got shot up, I feel good when my whole crew is OK and we walk in and see another one of those white squares colored red. We’ve got 18 of them colored now. Seventeen more and we’ll be see-ing the ones we love at home. Of course, besides just finishing our missions, all of us like to feel that we’re help-ing to finish this thing as fast as possible.

Dad, I find the things that occupy my mind most are the plain, ordinary things of life. I want to come home just to live for the joy of living and doing.

I want to get up in the morning, do a good hard day’s work, eat a good meal at a good family table, say ‘hello’ to the neighbors, hoot pheasants, walk out through a pretty field of spuds, drive to town through the snow, go to church with my Dad, wrestle with the boys and tease Mom and the girls, sing in the choir, have a family dinner together on Thanksgiving, go fishing, haul more beans with my truck that the next guy can with his, hug my Mom, marry the sweetest girl in the world, do as fine a job raising a family as my Dad did, build a house and help to make it a home.

A million things like that are what I want to live for, Dad. When I hear a beautiful piece of music, that’s what it says, and when I pray, those are the things I ask my Heavenly Father to let me do. I know your faith and prayers are always with me, and I hope I can live up to the kind of life you meant for me.”

Lieutenant Campbell was like everyone serving in the USAAF, counting down his missions. Upon completing 35 missions, an air crewman was assigned stateside. Lieutenant Campbell wanted to complete his missions, return home to everything he treasured in life, marry the sweetest girl in the world and build a home for his family.

Similar to the other 405,000 Americans who made the supreme sacrifice, Lieutenant Campbell was frozen in time in the memories of loved ones. The 405,000 never married the girl who sent them perfumed letters, had “baby boomer” children with a spouse, built a home, played with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren, or enjoyed being retired in their golden years. The ordinary things in life are not ordinary to everyone.

(St. Paul’s Congregational Council meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7 PM)

COUNCIL PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Ken Elverum, Council President Email: [email protected]

Recently, Tom Snodgrass left the church council for personal reasons thereby vacating the office of Council President. At its October meeting, a new election for Council President was held in accordance with our church constitution and by-laws. As a result, I was elected president to serve out the remainder of the council year. In addition, because an officer may not hold two elected positions at the same time, a new election was held for Vice President. Traci Trenoweth was elected Vice President. A new election of council officers will take place when the new council is chosen in June 2012.

Over the next several months our church will face many difficult issues as we deal with declining membership and decreased revenues. The council, and particularly myself, can use all the guidance we can get as we tackle these problems. We, of course, hope that we will be in your prayers, but also do not hesitate to contact me or any other member of the council personally to voice your concerns about the direction in which St. Paul’s Lutheran Family is heading.

Yours in prayer, Ken Elverum, Council President

PROPOSED 6-MONTH BUDGET

With regard to the November 8th council meeting where the pro-posed 6-month budget will be adopted, I would encourage any-

one who wants to provide input to attend. We will follow the agenda, but all suggestions will be con-sidered. The November meeting will start an hour earlier than normal at 6:00 p.m . to accommodate any testimony we receive from members. It will, however, not be an open forum like the last infor-mation meeting held on 10/16. We will be there all night if that were allowed. Instead, I would like to conduct the meeting like a public meeting similar to the legislature or board of supervisors where the council members hear the concerns of the mem-bers and then reach a decision.

Please be sure to return all of your budget work-sheets (copies are located on the narthex cabinet) , together with any written suggestions and input, prior to the 11/8 meeting. You may put them in the Council President’s folder in the workroom. Then, join us on 11/8 as we discuss our concerns and suggestions for the Jan-June 2012 budget.

-Ken Elverum, Council President

REMINDER … REMINDER … REMINDER … REMINDER … Our Annual Congregation Meeting will take place in Friendship Hall on Sunday, De-cember 11, at 11:45. The agenda will include:

1. A second vote requirement on the proposed changes concerning the new fiscal year that we adopted last June (terms of office; C12.02). P l e a s e r e f e r t o o u r w e b s i t e (www.stpaulsluthfamily.com) for an updated copy and/or review of St. Paul’s constitution.

2. A review of the Constitutional changes that the National Churchwide Assembly made in August, 2011.

3. Approval of our proposed 6-month budget (January-June, 2012). Copies of this budget will be available on the Narthex cabinet after council’s 11/8 meeting.

If you have any questions, please contact our Council President, Ken Elverum.
