YARMOUK BASIN – KEY FACTS

YB is located in the northwest of

Jordan.

Administratively; the basin areas

locates within four governorates in

Jordan.

The total water abstraction in 2011

was 46.3 million m3, while the safe

yield is 40 million m³.

Around 170 wells are existing in the

basin area

The total cropped areas in the basin

are 440,030 Dunum, both irrigated

and rain-fed crops.

CHALLENGES

The main challenges that facing water sector in YB are;

Increased water demand for domestic, industrial and agricultural uses in the basin area in a way exceeds water availability.

Refuges fluxes in the cities within YB and associated increase in water demand and water distribution infrastructure.

Over abstraction from groundwater especially for irrigation and domestic uses.

Climate change impacts on water resources

DIALOGUE METHODOLOGY - BRIEF

Phase I: Preparatory Phase

Step1:Identify the purpose and

outputs of stakeholders’ dialogue.

Step2: Conduct baseline studies to

analyze project physical boundaries

and social aspects.

Step3: Perform stakeholders’ analysis

and establishing River Basin

Committees (RBCs).

Phase II: Implementation Phase

Step1: Participatory meetings and

discussions at sub-basin level.

Step2: Consultations and verification

process at basin level.

Step3: Decisions approval and

institutionalizing water dialogue at

national level.
