A Stainless World

Introducing a fresh hygienic concept, Thiruvananthapuram-based Eram Scientific Solutions Private Limited will install 60 pre-fabricated modular stainless steel toilets across

Bhubaneswar. Out of these 60 toilets, 30 will be specified for men and the other 30 for women. 40 of these will be semi-automatic, while 20 will be fully automatic (with the capability of self-cleaning). This remarkable stainless steel solution will encounter hygiene issues caused due to lack of sanitation. The durability and aesthetic value of stainless steel toilets have been tried & tested, and this concept is now being replicated across cities.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is geared up to replace old electrical equipment with state-of-the-art material and introduce new safety features on the 240 km of elevated corridors on its network. Stainless steel pins will replace the problematic copper split pin, used to support the insulator of the power lines, in order to make the metro network more efficient. With a higher tensile strength and more durability, stainless steel has been chosen as the optimum alternative to counter technical glitches during metro operations. There are 9,532 split pins installed in the system, out of which 2,183 pins have been replaced with stainless steel ones.

Mumbai's renowned portland stone flora fountain is set to be unveiled around Diwali, in November, this year. The area will be revamped with more hardscape and paving, on the lines of Trafalgar Square in London. As a part of the revamping process, a stainless steel pipe seating will now allow people to meet and assemble around the monument, than just transit. According to the Indian National Trust for Art and Culture Heritage (INTACH), the landmark had suffered withering due to saline winds, thermal expansion-contraction, human misuse, and pollution. The use of stainless steel will help replenish the aesthetics and charm of this fountain.

From a mainstream biscuit manufacturing big-shot, to a passionate young stainless steel producer in Kolkata, how did this journey start?

During the early 70s, my grandfather, Mr Baijnath Choudhary, came down to Kolkata, f rom our hometown Nangal Choudhary, Haryana, where he started a business in trading. He then shifted to biscuit manufacturing in the early 80s, which has today translated into the well known 'Anmol Biscuits' (now 'Anmol Industries'), the fourth largest biscuit company in India. We are an extended Marwari joint family where my father is the second eldest of the four brothers. Since inception, we have an inclusive business model that helped us extend our reach to real estate, cement, finance, and other industries apart f rom the f lagship business of biscuit manufacturing. I am the third generation of this family, who grew up nurturing values like hard work and unity . This helped me understand the importance of a collective growth rather than fostering personal interests. I was born and brought up in Kolkata. After pursuing my under-graduation from Nottingham University (2005-2008) and Masters from the University of Manchester (2008-2009), I came back to join the family business. This was the

“Kharcha kam karne mein time waste mat karo, kamai badhane mein dhyan do” (translated as, “Don't waste your time on micro managing your expenses, instead work towards increasing your income, because increased production will anyway reduce your average costs”), Mr Ashish Choudhary attributes this line to his grandfather, as he reflects upon his inspiring business journey. As the third generation leader born to the reputed Kolkata based Anmol Group, this zealous youngster didn't content himself to his family's business success. Rather, he went on to break all norms and re-design Eastern India's stainless steel market. This is the story of Director, Anmol Stainless, Mr Ashish Choudhary, who proved his worth as not just a successful entrepreneur with commendable business acumen, but also as an exemplary patriot, striving to make his nation self-sufficient in stainless steel production.

time when we were looking forward to diversify our presence in the country. Back in 2011, the market in Eastern India wasn't exposed to stainless steel manufacturing. It was then, at the age of 25, that I took up this challenge and set-up the first stainless steel pipe manufacturing and cold rolling unit in Eastern India.

When did your relationship with Jindal Stainless start?

Eastern India lacked in stainless steel production and the supplies used to predominantly come from Delhi in north and Gujarat in west. Jindal Stainless was a major raw material supplier with its plant based in Haryana. Around the time when we began to establish stainless steel footprints in Kolkata, Jindal Stainless was coming up with its Jajpur plant. This was a major push for an association majorly for two reasons; first, the ready availability of raw material in this part of the country, and second, I had seen Hisar develop by leaps and bounds due to the mother plant of Jindal Stainless in the city. This helped me believe in eastern region's potential to prosper in the same manner. It further underlined my vision of having an in-house manufacturing capacity in our vicinity, which can

market, marking a shift f rom railings segment, alone. I'm proud to tell you that today the furniture industry is one of the biggest consumer of stainless steel in Eastern India.Throughout this journey my fami ly has been extremely supportive of all our advents. My father, Mr Dilip Kumar Choudhary has been a pillar supporting me through thick and thin. I count this as my biggest strength. We have grown as a family b u s i n e s s w i t h n o i n t e r n a l disputes, and a philosophy of inclusive profit and growth.

Tell us about the work culture at your company. As a young entrepreneur, what is your idea of a perfect workplace?

The basic philosophy that we have thrived upon all these years is that we grow as one collective family. This is what we also celebrate as a culture in Anmol Stainless . Currently, we have more than 3000 people working with us in the entire group. We understand t h a t i t i s a g i v e a n d t a k e relationship, where you treat your employees as a family, in return of reliable, long-lasting relationship. We are very serious about an

serve to the already existing demand, which was expected to grow in the next 5-7 years. Today we have 14 TIG mills, with a production capacity of 750 tonnes of pipes and tubes per month, and a coil rolling capacity of 2000 t o n n e s p e r m o n t h . J i n d a l Stainless supported our set-up as a mentor by providing guidance on technical know-how and immediate equipment supplies. Since then, we share a mutually beneficial relationship with Jindal Stainless.

During this ambitious journey, what were the major milestones that you accomplished? Where did you derive the motivation from?

I knew that it will not be an easy journey right f rom the start. Majorly because we envisioned to set up a stainless steel unit in a region that was oblivious to the existence of the metal. Honestly, there was no need for us to shift from being an established biscuit manufacturing firm to a novice stainless steel producer. Yet, I signed up for this because I had faith in the product and I was not

ready to be content. It took us 5 toiling years to reach where we are today. From raw materials to production, cash sales, market credit, and what not, stainless steel is dramatically different f r o m t h e b i s c u i t i n d u s t r y . Moreover, the demand was also weak in the initial days. As a result, in i t ia l ly there were several challenges with our sales to the customers. Apart f rom this, another major challenge was that people mistook us to be suppliers of mild steel. Even today, we get demands for cold rolled mild steel. We also triggered stainless steel consumption in the furniture

state-of- the-art production capacity in Odisha has left a mark on me. I also congratulate Mr Abhyuday Jindal for infusing the business culture with a f resh system based thought process.

What will be your message to all the budding entrepreneurs out there?

I'd like to quote my set of rules. First, define a vision for yourself. Second, start your journey. And third, keep going. Don't rely on shortcuts for momentary success. To catch the bigger fish, you have to have that hunger. The basic d i f f e r e n c e b e t w e e n b e i n g content and being hungry will always be there, but note that this is not greed, but a continuous spree of dedicated efforts to excel. Do this to be able to become someone who can contribute to the society. As quoted in Gita, “Earn f rom ten hands , and distribute that wealth with ten lakh hands.” Also, be persistent enough to keep going, as there will be failures on the way. Never give up. A healthy mind and body are inevitable for driving success, so be sure to give your body the necessary workout. Health is wealth and without a proper functioning mind and body, you won't be able to sustain the growth and success of your hard labor.

h o n e s t a n d p r o g r e s s i v e environment, which is why we take serious actions in case of m i s c h i e v o u s c o n d u c t b y employees. We have a culture where our management visits the employees families in times of celebrations and sorrow. We take our employees on annual picnics and outings during Christmas, celebrate Vishwakarma Puja, organise blood donation camps, all of this to instil a feeling of belongingness among all our employees.

In your entire gamut of suppliers a n d c u s t o m e r s , i s t h e r e something that sets Jindal Stainless apart?

I believe that in India, we are the only company which is associated with Jindal Stainless in multiple ways. We are a customer in pipe & tube as well as in the re-roller segments. We are also conversion agents for Jindal Stainless, as well as the manager of the Kolkata stockyard. We have several business act iv it ies running parallel with Jindal Stainless. As

far as quality, range of products, and infrastructure are concerned, Jindal Stainless is unmatchable. This is perhaps the reason that the co m pa ny h o l d s a b o u t 8 0 % market share. Moreover, the commitment and delivery of the company is to vouch for. To top all this up, we admire Jindal S t a i n l e s s ' p h i l o s o p h y t o manufacture in India itself. Resurrecting infrastructure with sustainable stainless steel reinforcements

Of late, the Indian Railways have mandated the use of stainless steel rebars for all construction related

activities falling within the coastal zones, i.e. 30 km from the coast. Jindal Stainless is geared up to

support this new infrastructural development. Additionally, stainless steel rebars can also be used in

other industrial segments, such as steel plants and chemical industries, where corrosion due to acid fumes and

other hazardous substances is a major issue.

India is highly prone to corrosion, with 90% of the topography falling under corrosive zone. It has been estimated

that the total financial loss due to corrosion in India is to the tune of Rs 6 lakh crore per annum (5-6% of the total

GDP- as per industry standards). Considering the huge financial drain on the economy due to corrosion, it is

imperative to address this problem by using stainless steel in place of conventional materials, such as mild steel,

galvanized steel, etc.

Advantages of stainless steel rebars:

• Excellent corrosion resistance, thereby enabling significantly higher life of the buildings / bridges, etc.

Studies have shown that usage of duplex stainless steel rebars could provide a life of around 200 years.

• High impact resistance, making them the most suitable material to be used in seismic zones.

• Negligible repair and maintenance cost.

• Significantly lower life cycle cost as compared to alternate materials.

ABOUT THE ARCHITECTMr Adil Abuzar is an architect with a B Arch. degree from Manipal University, Manipal, Karnataka. He has been associated with Stephane Paumier architects for the past 8 years. He has worked on several projects in his career that range from institutional and commercial to residential buildings.

Stainless steel is not just a product, but a

way of life. With its eco-friendly qualities,

stainless steel finds place in a variety of

applications, ranging from health,

transport, infrastructure, lifestyle,

agriculture, engineering, defence, and

many more. Stainless Post celebrates this

versatility and brings to you stories of

professionals from across industries.

“Stainless steel has now become an integral material in the architecture and

construction industry. The applications of stainless steel have shown an

exponential growth in the last 10 years. We have been majorly using stainless

steel for hardware applications in doors, windows, and glazing. For

institutional and large scale projects, that require a kitchen that can cater to

1000 or more people, usage of stainless steel has now become a mandate.

Food preparation areas, serving areas , counters, and platforms are mostly

fabricated in stainless steel, as the material is durable, easy to clean, and

provides a hygienic environment to work in. Apart from counters, false ceilings

are also being provided in stainless steel for their ease of installation, their

aesthetic richness, and easy maintenance.”

Insights

Plate type Heat Exchanges (PHEs) are used

for heat transfer from one fluid to another,

by circulating them through the assembly

of press formed steel sheets. In the process, various

types of fluids come in direct contact with the surface

of these steel sheets, at different temperatures, which

leads to corrosion of steel. Being inherently corrosion

resistant, stainless steel is widely being used in PHEs.

Stainless steel has better formability which is required

for press operation. Moreover, better heat transfer

rate of stainless steel (as compared to mild steel) also

improves efficiency of heat exchanger units.

Stainless steel sheets assembly, of 0.5-0.6 mm

thickness, in 316L and 304 grades are used for

manufacturing PHEs. These PHEs are used for heat

transfer applications in chemical processing, oil and

gas, power generation, food and pharmaceutical

industry, and marine and shipboard applications.

Being a special and critical application, the quality of

stainless steel is controlled by stringent technical

delivery conditions, leading to limited suppliers and

higher lead times. It is difficult to supply such a strict

thickness material in multi-slit requirement, mainly

due to stringent conditions and tight lead times from

mill.

Despite these circumstances, Jindal Stainless has

successfully fulfilled 95% of its delivery schedule. This

has been achieved by the efforts of Associate General

Manager, Mr Ravindra D Yawle and his dedicated

team, who planned and monitored every stage, right

from order booking, processing of coils at the plant,

multi-slit planning, and maintaining optimum stock

at Taloja yard, involving coordination with multiple

functional departments.

Jindal Stainless has always focussed on bringing

benefits to its customers. This is certified by a track

record of years with no quality issues and 100%

delivery assurance. This expertise gives the company

a 95 % market share in supplies to the four major PHE

manufactures in India, namely, Tranter India, Alfa

Laval India, Kelvion India, and Sondex Heat

Exchangers (Danfoss). As the global suppliers showed

their inability to deliver, Jindal Stainless grabbed this

opportunity and accepted the challenge to supply

the required sizes and quantities in three weeks time,

against KANBAN to Tranter India.

Matching the pace of the dynamics in this segment,

Jindal Stainless, for the first time, has supplied Duplex

UNS32205 material for PHE applications to Kelvion

India for supplies to NALCO, Angul. Concentration of

booking, planning, and processing of material

requirements of entire PHE segment has allowed the

company to command prices, leading to higher

margins and EBIDTA, and reducing loss, and

managing inventory.
