Register Using the Registration FormComplete the registration form at the back of this booklet. Detach at the dotted line and mail or drop off the form and fee to Dixie Stephens, Rapid City Area Schools Office of Staff Development, 300 Sixth St., Rapid City, SD 57701.

Class ConfirmationRegistration is confirmed by your payment of the course fee when you return the registrationform. NO registration is complete until fees are paid. You will not receive a confirmation notice.

Class CancellationsThe Director of Staff Development determines the cancellation of a class due to insufficient enrollment. You will be notified and your money refunded.

Cancellations Due To WeatherWhen the Rapid City Area Schools (RCAS) is closed due to inclement weather, Professional Growth classes are also cancelled.

To Cancel a RegistrationTo ensure a full refund you must call (605) 394-4067 and withdraw from the class ten days prior to the first session of class. If you withdraw from the class less than 10 days prior to the first class session, you will forfeit your RCAS fee.

Each course description includes a section for Target Group(s) and Lane Change Status for Rapid City Area School (RCAS) employees only. Target Group(s) indicates the group that the instructor had in mind when designing the class. Lane Change Status indicates the individuals whom, upon successful completion of the class, will be granted credit for lane change. Refer to the negotiated agreement for lane change criteria. Certified staff who are not employed by RCAS need to arrange lane change status with their district of employment.

Career EnhancementCareer Enhancement applies to Rapid City Area School (RCAS) classified employees only. Professional Growth classes pre-approved for Career Enhancement credit are identified in this flyer. RCAS classified staff members do not need to send in the Career Enhancement Application Form before taking a class that has been pre-approved for Career Enhancement. Several of the Community Education classes offered through the Career Learning Center can be used for pre-approved Career Enhancement credit also. All others must be pre-approved by the RCAS Office of Staff Development prior to taking the class(es).

Caution: The instructor may change the name of a class. In that instance, we try to list the previous titles for your reference. It is your responsibility to make sure you are not taking the same class twice. A course may only count one time towards a lane change. Lane change status cannot be awarded twice for the same class with different titles.

Upon completion of a class, participants are strongly encouraged to keep all documents.

Paperless Teacher Certification Process

The Department of Education no longer issues paper certificates to individuals seeking initial certification, renewing their certification, or adding an authorization.

Instead, the department e-mails applicants an electronic copy of their certificate to print as needed. This electronic document serves as the official certificate. The new system is designed to streamline the certification process and to reduce costs related to printing and mailing certificates.

If an applicant is missing any required documentation, he or she is notified via e-mail as well. It is up to the applicant to maintain a valid e-mail address.

Once the department takes action on a certification application (new, renewal or additional authorization), that information shows up simultaneously on “Teacher 411”. Teacher 411 is the department’s online database providing information regarding an educator’s preparation, certification, current employment (if any) and highly qualified status.

To access Teacher 411, go to www.doe.sd.gov and click on “Teacher 411” under “Quick Links”.

RENEWAL CERTIFICATION

Educators who have a South Dakota teaching certificate (valid or lapsed) need to renew by completing the online renewal application.

Renewal RequirementsAll educators are required to earn six credits for renewal purposes. The type of credit varies based on the educator’s highest degree: --Bachelor’s degree – At least three credits must be transcripted; the remaining credits may be continuing education contact hours (CEU’s).--Advanced degree or National Board Certification – These credits can be any combination of transcripted credits or continuing education contact hours (CEU’s).

- All certificates expire July 1.- Renewal application may be submitted after Jan. 1 of the year the certificate expires.- Once renewal application is submitted, credits may be earned for the next renewal.

Questions regarding the paperless certification process should be directed to [email protected] or call the department’s main number at (605) 773-3134.

HELPFUL HINTS FOR RENEWING YOUR CERTIFICATE

Renewing your certificate any time soon? Follow these ten suggestions to make the process go as smoothly as possible.

1) Don’t let your certificate expire Certificates expire July 1 of the year in which they are due for renewal.

2) Apply early Even though you have until July 1, we recommend you apply for renewal well in

advance of that date. Application may be made any time after January 1 of the year in which your certificate expires.

3) Earn credit for next renewal period right away Begin earning credit for your next renewal the day after you submit your renewal

application.

4) Find a short-term solution If you’re missing certain requirements for the current renewal, you may be able to apply

for a one-year extension that will keep your certificate valid for one additional year.

5) Eligible for a 10-year certificate? Applicants may apply for a one-time 10-year certificate upon completion of an advanced

degree (master’s, specialist, doctorate, National Board).

6) Know your credits A credit is equivalent to 15 contact hours. A continuing education contact hour is documented by participation in an educational

professional development opportunity. A transcripted credit is issued on an accredited college or university transcript.

7) Bachelor’s degree? You need to renew with 6 credits. A minimum of three credits must be transcripted credit. Remaining credits may be continuing education contact hours (CEU’s).

8) Advanced degree? You need to renew with 6 credits. Any combination of transcripted credit or continuing education contact hours may be

used.

9) Apply online The online certification application is available 24/7 at www.teacher411.sd.gov.

10) Check status of certification Public information about your certificate is available at www.teacher411.sd.gov.

In this course, participants will examine generalizations at the heart of operations in the elementary and middle grades. They will learn to express these generalizations in common language and in algebraic notation, develop arguments based on representations of the operations, study what it means to prove a generalization, and extend their generalizations and arguments when the domain expands from whole numbers to integers. Participants will have the opportunity to study classroom episodes (cases), to view and discuss videotapes of mathematics classrooms and to extend their own algebraic reasoning in lessons led by the instructor.
