LEADERSHIP MATTERS by Roger Yancey, D.Min.
What are the results of sin? Most Christians answer this question with responses like death, pain, sickness, separation from God, etc. All true – except these are the results of God’s punishment on sin. Genesis 3 provides the results of sin on mankind – specifically what happened to Adam & Eve between the time they sinned and God’s judgment. We find three affects:
Guilt: Gen. 3:7 says that they knew they had sinned. The strange sensation of a guilty conscience hits them for the very first time. Adam’s guilt passed down to all mankind. We are familiar with this type of teaching in the West. Almost every theological source in our libraries examines man’s guilt throughout the Old & New Testaments. We have a preoccupation in the West with guilt and man’s freedom from guilt. So much so, in fact, that there’s a tendency to fail to notice the other two major effects of sin.
Shame: Gen. 3:8 says that they hid themselves and were ashamed. So it wasn’t just guilt that passed to mankind, but also shame. Both the Old & New Testaments have a lot to say about shame. Man exists in a state of shame before God. Many cultures (especially within the 10/40 window) place shame & honor at the center of their worldview versus right & wrong.
Fear: Gen 3:10 says that they hid themselves from God for they were afraid. Fear also got passed down to mankind. Before man enjoyed the presence of God; now man fears God. Fear is another topic widely discussed in both the Old & New Testaments. Fear-based worldviews (fear of spirits, the supernatural world) can be found in Africa, Central/South America, Pacific Islanders, even in my old home of Central Asia.
If man originally had only one language and one worldview in Eden, where did the others originate? I would suggest to you that worldviews are the natural outworking of wrestling with the three results of sin listed above. Some, like Cain, experienced events that shaped the remainder of their lives with fear. Others, like Ham, lived under the stigma of shame. As people multiplied and spread across the earth, some cultures became more sensitive to guilt or shame or fear than others.
As we will see in Part 3 of this series, having a proper understanding of the results of sin on mankind can help shape how we present the gospel to the lost who hold different worldviews than our own. Since we come from a guilt-based worldview in the West, how we frame the gospel may have little relevance to someone from a guilt or fear-based worldview. More on that later. Grace & Peace, Darrell Ingram
THE IMPORTANCE OF WORLDVIEW (PART 2) By: Darrell Ingram
CHURCH/MISSION FOCUS: UNDER OVER FELLOWSHIP By: Natalie Bowman
As I am writing this article Game 5 of the Astros vs. the Dodgers is playing in the background. If you don’t like baseball you might want to stop reading now – but humor me and see if there isn’t something you might find of interest. Even a lackluster baseball fan would have to admit the World Series has been engaging. The teams are evenly matched in many ways and have provided moments of sheer brilliance and comebacks usually only found in a movie.
So with the game won and the team heading to LA I found myself pondering what makes a baseball team great – and if there were any lessons from a baseball team that would be helpful to a church staff or team of leaders. Frankly, there is no shortage of opinions, articles or analysis of what makes a great team. I did read one article by Arthur Raise of particular interest. As he stated, “Baseball is a team sport and every player and team needs to be committed and passionate about the game.” To succeed every team whether major league, minor league, or local needs the following:
1. A team spirit and commitment to the game. The team must work as a single unit and be devoted to the game. They must live and breathe baseball.
2. The team must have a good support system of families, team owner, sponsors, the coach, school and college authorities and more need to understand the psyche of the team and create a strong impermeable support system.
3. The team must have a good coach who will lead the team in every way. The coach is the backbone of the team and needs to be tough and yet loving. He or she must care for the team and its every player. The coach must understand the team and its members better than he understands himself or herself.
4. The team must be devoted to the sport and yet understand that there is a world beyond baseball. So, every member must simultaneously prepare for life beyond baseball. Be trained in skills and have qualifications that will allow the player to live a fulfilled life after baseball.
5. Great focus must be placed on balanced nutrition and mental strength training. A strong mind and body makes a great baseball player. Team training must include aspects of health, nutrition, and mental strength. The team must have a balanced diet, a balanced exercise routine that includes breathing exercises and meditation techniques.
6. While winning can be the goal every team must play for sheer joy and each player must focus on his strengths and work out his weaknesses. The team must become an impregnable fort so that the opponents can never use kinks in the armor.” So how would these apply to a Staff Team or a Team of Servant Leaders in a church Family? Same principles with a bit of adjustment would make them more applicable:
1. A team spirit and commitment to the Gospel. The team must work as a single unit and be devoted Christ followers. They must live and breath to bring glory to God.
2. The team must have a good support system of church families, church partners and supporters who join with them in fulfilling the Mission of the Church and the fulfillment of God’s unique intention for them.
3. The team must have a genuine Pastor who will lead provide healthy servant leadership. The pastor is a critical part of the team and needs to be tough and yet loving. He must care for the team and every member.
4.The team must be devoted to the Church and yet understand that there is a world beyond the Church. Work-Life balance is critical – all work and no play makes for an unhealthy staff or team of leaders. We need time to recharge, be with our families and have a life that is not fully defined by what happens within the Church.
5. Great focus must be placed on balanced nutrition and mental strength training. We are told to love God with all of our soul, mind and body. A strong mind and body makes us more effective and gives us stamina for the long-term.
6. We already won – Jesus saved us. But we are called to follow Him for the sheer joy of serving Him. Each team member must focus on their strengths and work out their weaknesses. The team must become an impregnable fort so that the enemy can never use kinks in the armor.”
Maybe you would agree – a great baseball team might have something to teach us about being an effective team.
In Kingdom service, Executive Director/Associational Missionary
Under Over Fellowship began it’s ministry as a mission church by Conroe Community Church in March 2011. This church is set apart from other churches in the Conroe area because the Sunday morning services are held outside at Heritage Park, and it is beautiful this time of year. Jerry Vineyard is the pastor of Under Over Fellowship, and his wife of 18 years has joined the ministry full time. Together they have two children. A daughter Olivia who is 16 and member of the Fighting Tiger Marching Band. And a son named Tripp who is in the 3rd grade and, like his dad, is a Star Wars fan.
There are so many exciting ministries happening at Under Over Fellowship. Currently they have men and women’s residential programs, a food pantry, a clothing closet, and shower and laundry ministry. Everyday they serve a hot meal and at noon Monday through Friday a Bible Study class is held in their building. They are currently in their 3rd
semester of Under Over Bible Institute offering 5 classes including Old Testament, New Testament, Financial Peace, and more. In January they will be opening a Medical Clinic and the Art Barn, which is a place to reach the community of Conroe for Christ through theater and the visual arts. God is really moving in this church and has blessed them with a building and has opened the doors to plant a Spanish speaking congregation in that building.
As the holidays approach there are a couple of exciting events happening within Under Over Fellowship. They will be having their Annual Thanksgiving Day Meal and football. They are also having their first annual Under Over Christmas Store. This Christmas Store is for families that can not afford Christmas. The families will be able to come and purchase toys at 80% of suggested retail prices. Bro. Jerry asked that you be in prayer for them and about joining with them. These wonderful ministries could not happen without individual and church partners.
