From the President, Craig Brewer(Class of 1990)A new school year is here and St. Vincent Athletics are in full swing. Homecoming is right around the corner and I want to encourage all alumni, especially those with anniversary years, to come home to Perryville and take part in many of the wonderful traditions of Homecoming at St. Vincent High School.

The bonfire is slated for Thursday, October 10th. Come on out with your family to watch the skits by the High School classes and grab a bratwurst, homemade chips and soda for sale by the Alumni Association. On Friday, October 11th, be sure to ride in the parade with your classmates and come to the football game against St. Pius to cheer on the Indians. Don’t forget to also purchase a Cow Patty Ticket for a chance to win $1,000!

I want to take the opportunity to thank the people and businesses who help support St. Vincent Athletics year after year. From our Gold and Blue Corporate Sponsors to the volunteers at the Mayfest and our annual golf tournament, we could not help fund the sports programs at SV without you. Your time and effort does not go unnoticed and the Alumni Association wants to extend a big THANKS!

The Alumni Association is continuing to work hard to keep pace with the needs of the sporting programs at SVHS. In June of this year, the Alumni Association sold porkburgers at the Bikers on the Square event in Perryville in addition to our annual undertaking at the Mayfest. This was a unique chance to take part in a community event and raise some additional funds to help SVHS. Thanks to all those that participated.

Finally, if you would like to become more involved with the St. Vincent Alumni Association, I encourage you to come to our meetings on the last Monday of every month in the Marillac Room in the Parish Center. We love participation and are always looking for dedicated people to serve on the Board. Several terms are up in May 2014, and we need your help to continue the good work of the Alumni Association. Call me for more information.

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the St. Vincent High School Alumni Association, we look forward to seeing you at Homecoming!

The Fr. Meyer Foundation monthly drawing continues to be a successful fundraiser for the SV Alumni. Many of you have been purchasing Fr. Meyer tickets for a number of years and we would like to express our sincere thanks to each of you.

Fr. Meyer tickets are sold each month for $1 donation or you can purchase an annual ticket for $12.00 and each month a ticket will be put in thedrawing for you. The winner for the month receives $1,000. You get 12 chances to win $1,000 for only $12.00 - much better chances than any lottery.

Fr. Meyer proceeds, along with the income from other events, have helped the SV Alumni Association contribute to the SVHS sports budgets and improvements to the school sports complex. School expenses are alwaysincreasing and we need the support of SV Alumni to keep up the raising costs.

Another way to help is to sell the tickets monthly or get a group of friends to buy yearly tickets. If you would like to sell Fr. Meyer tickets, please contact Sue Nesslein at 547-1949 or 846-8611. If you sell the winning ticket you receive a monetary gift. We always need more sellers!! We encourage you to give this project a serious consideration to help your Alma Mater.

For those of you who have participated in the past THANK YOU, and please continue this year. For those of you who have not, give it a try. We need your support!!

Dear Friends and Alumni of St. Vincent Schools,

May the Peace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, be with you always!

The legacy of Catholic Education in Perry County spans nearly two centuries, beginning with the establishment of the first seminary westof the Mississippi River, and the founding of our Catholic Schools. The legacy of Catholic Education in our parish continues today becauseour families believe in the value of Catholic Education and are willing to make sacrifices to ensure its future.

The Church, founded by Jesus Christ himself, is a living testament of the presence and love of God in our world. It is an awesome privilegeto pass on to the next generation what was so generously given to us - the Good News of Jesus Christ!

Thank you for your fidelity to Christ’s command: “Go, Teach, and Baptize in the Name of the Father, and the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”, andfor the spiritual, financial, and practical support you give to our Catholic Schools.

May God bring to fulfillment the good work he has begun in all of us!

Sincerely in Christ,

Father Milton Fleming Ryan, C.M.

What a privilege it has been to serve as principal this past year! Looking back over the course of the year, I am proud of our graduating Class of 2013 who, with 41 students, achieved $1.12 million in scholarships for college and accomplished 9070 hours of service while in high school. This is a testament to them, to our teachers, and the academic program of St. Vincent High School.

“We are the Hands and Feet of Christ” is our theme for 2013-2014. Through the talents of Mrs. Glenda Mueller, Art Instructor at SV, we now have a large 3D likeness of Jesus without hands that will be placed in the sanctuary of church to remind us of our need to live as St. Vincent and follow our mission, “St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Schools, united in Christ, and guided by the wisdom and educational values of St. Vincent, transform each student through faith and education.”

Again this year, we continue our AdvanEd plan for improvement in curriculum, technology, and meeting the needs of our student population. In a few years, a visiting team of educational peers will come to SVHS and review our work for improvement - there-accredit SVHS based on their findings. Once re-accredited, we will provide annual reports and continue implementation ofstrategies.

Lastly, I would like to thank the Education Foundation (Centennial Fund) of SV, who will concentrate their technology for our schools. Because of their efforts, no money from tuition dollars or the St. Vincent Parish will be needed to support thisimportant effort. These updates are essential for our school accreditation, and it is the forward thinking of the Foundation to recognize that our students need to compete in a technologic and ever-changing world.

My hope over this next year is to continue our plan for improvement with faculty, which will ultimately benefit our students, who are the leaders of tomorrow.

Sincerely,Dr. Pat Hensley

SVHS - Improving on the needs of the students

Page 6: St. Vincent Alumni Association • P.O. Box 101 • Perryville

SVE - Growth in Numbers Greetings and Blessings as we embrace the 2013-2014 School Year. So much has happened overthe course of the past year, it boggles my mind to think, “Here we are again”! I feel so fortunateto have this opportunity to continue working with the students, teachers, parents, and otherstakeholders of St. Vincent Schools. Since last year, St. Vincent Elementary saw our students grow in faith, academics, and service. We participated in two food drives for the needy, the enormous Operation Christmas Child that sent more than 700 gift packages to children in need, theMath-A-Thon for St. Judes, and so many more programs and projects. Our students won essay and poster contests, performed outstanding musicals for the public, and really let their light shine forall. Over the summer we renovated our computer lab so that it can accommodate up to 30computers. Mr. Pannier and crew did an awesome job on the renovation as well as the overhaul on our bathrooms! SVE sparkles! We also have a new sign to help direct visitors into the buildingdonated by our retiring teacher Mrs. Cindy Wibbenmeyer and her husband Mike. We will miss her!

New staff to our building include Mrs. Terrie LaRose who will teach first grade, and Mr. Josh Rollet (2008) who will teach third grade. Terrie has taught first grade for eight years previously, in a public school setting, but is so excited to share her talents and faith with our students. Josh is an alum of SVHS (2008), and a former student of mine that I am proud to welcome to theteaching staff. He has been an After School Care assistant for the last two years and will continue with that also.

Our numbers are up this year as we will have Our theme for the 2013-2014 Academic year is “We Are The Hands and Feet of Christ”. We’ll focus on what each of us can do to serve others in Christ’s place. The staff will be working in over-drive this year to complete our accreditation work before we have our formal review in February, 2014. A great deal of work goes into keeping a school accredited. We will delve into overhauling and aligning our curriculum to meet the Common Core curriculum mandates that are in final stages for public and private schools.

SVE will be a pilot program for the Vincentian Marian Youth curriculum. First and Fifth grade will implement a curriculumcomponent once per month for the VMY. On a similar note, we are proud to implement “Traveling Mary”, a devotional tool to The Blessed Mother. Students will take home a Mary statue, on a rotation basis, and utilize the presence of this statue in forming devotional practices. Each week, Mary will travel to a different student’s home. (Thanks to the Miraculous Medal for theirsponsorship) We will also be implementing a new discipline tool, Virtue Based Restorative Discipline, to connect behavior, ex-pectations, and the virtues that Christ leads us to live. This program is showing huge positive reaction in many otherArchdiocese schools.

SVE continues to be a place where academics, faith, service, and social formation are the focus. Please come by and check out what we are up to! You can also stay tuned-in to us on the new website, www.svdepaul.org by clicking on the elementary tab at the top. As always, we want to be ALIVE IN CHRIST.

Generations of Indian Pride

It began in 1938 when Fr. Huber` visited the Gotto farm and pleaded withWilliam Gotto to allow his son Joseph (“Joe) to go to high school at SVHS. After many attempts, William finally agreed that the farm work could wait and that his son needed an education.

Growing up with a ball in his hand, naturally Joe joined the football team. Joe laughs as he recalls the memories of playing football back then. Sunday afternoons, the football field with no bleachers, was lined with fans that stood behind a wire that marked the gridiron. The games were played against many of the same opponents we play today with officials keeping score. There were no coaches, just a group of young men in leather helmets and a few pads. Joe was one of 20 elite young men who made up their own plays, sometimes changing them a second before the snap of the pigskin. Nominated captain his senior year, Joe led the Indians to a winning season.

Now 89 years old, Joe sits proudly in the stands, as his grandson, a thirdgeneration SV football captain, Levi Gotto, heads out to midfield for the coin toss. Today Levi walks in the same footsteps as his father, Jeff, and hisgrandfather did, keeping SV pride strong 72 years later.

Alumni Golf TournamentThe St. Vincent Alumni Golf Tournament was held again this year on Friday, April 26 at the Ste. Genevieve Country Club. It was an enjoyable time for all while also being one of our biggest fundraisers of the year, bringing $17,650.

A great big THANKS goes out to Gerald Hoffman (1961) and Ken Schumer (1978) who once again, spent countless hours preparing for yet another successful tournament. The Alumni officers also pitched in to offer their assistance on the day of for check in and other things to help prepare for the day.

More thanks goes to our major sponsors of the event, which include our Corporate Sponsors Kohlfeld Distributing and Lakenan Insurance (Lee Lottes-1966);beverage sponsors included Kohlfeld Distributing, River Eagle Distributing, Bluff City Beer, The Printing Company (Margarita Cart), Pepsi MidAmerica & Major Brands (Mike Wilson); food sponsors including Roziers in Perryville, RoziersCountry Mart in Chester, IL; the cooler sponsor who is Schemel/Tarrillion; cooler cup sponsors are Sauer Woodworks & Lundy Heating & Cooling. We also cannot forget our many local businesses that were hole sponsors, too many to mention here, but we appreciate them all!

Bragging rights go to this year’s winning team, which included Craig Brewer (1990), Chad Layton (1991), Scott Hoffman (1989) and Wes Kurre. And last but not least, we’d like to thank all those alumni that return to play year after year. For those that haven’t, please consider joining us next year on April 25, even if you aren’t a regular golfer. Don’t worry, you won’t be the only one and you are guaranteed a great time regardless of your final score!

Three generations of St. Vincent football captains, Levi Gotto 2013-2014 , Joseph Gotto Sr. 1941-1942 and Jeff Gotto 1985-1986.
