Alumni Association 89th Annual MeetingSTATEMENT OF NEED The fields oforthopaedic surgery and rheumatologyare constantly changing disciplines. Theresults of recent clinical investigations,research results and updates on currentadvances in the field will be presented.Alumnae/alumni and present staff atHospital for Special Surgery should be updated on current advances inorthopaedics, rheumatology andmusculoskeletal medicine.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES Weill Cornell CMEactivities are intended to lead to betterpatient care. At the conclusion of thecourse, the participant should be able to:1. Identify the reason for and gain the
ability to assess optimally the clinical outcomes of the surgical and medicaltreatments employed in patients with a broad range of musculoskeletal disorders.
2. Describe the latest advances in limb lengthening and reconstruction surgery including indications, technique and outcomes.
3. List the benefits and disadvantages of a universal healthcare system.
4. Describe the impact of universal healthcare on a European medical facility currently using that system.
5. Explain the potential impact of universal healthcare on specialty hospitals (such as HSS) in the United States.
6. Assess how universal healthcarewould impact a state government such as that of New York.
7. Describe the pathophysiology of bone failure once osteonecrosis hasoccurred.
8. Identify potential interventions to counteract collapse (drugs, cells,coring and growth fractures).
9. Discuss new concepts in post-operativecare of the orthopedic patient interms of acute post-operative pain management and medical care.
10. Identify what tools and techniques are at the cutting edge in joint replacement.
11. Evaluate and reassess tools and techniques that appear not to be withstanding the test of time.
TARGET AUDIENCE Physicians working inthe specialties of orthopaedics, rheuma-tology, radiology, anesthesia, physiatryand neurology including HSS alumni andthe current residents, fellows and medicalstaff of Hospital for Special Surgery.

has shown leadership and/or has had special recognition in his/her professional specialty
• Has actively participated in HSS alumni affairs
Chitranjan S. Ranawat, MD
Born in Sarwania, India, Chitranjan Ranawat, MD began his medical educationand orthopaedic residency training in India. He first came to HSS as a handsurgery fellow in 1966 and continued on as a fellow in rheumato-orthopaedicreconstructive surgery. Dr. Ranawat served on the HSS attending from 1969 until1994, during which he served as the Director of the Hand Service, until 1991 whenhe transitioned to the role of Director of the Surgical Arthritis Service. He wasappointed Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Weill Medical College ofCornell University in 1979 and in 1994, became Professor of Clinical Orthopaedics.Currently, Dr. Ranawat is The James A. Nicholas Chairman of the Department ofOrthopedic Surgery and the Director of the Ranawat Orthopaedic Center atLenox Hill Hospital.
While at HSS, Dr. Ranawat worked with departments across the institution todevelop significant advancements in the field of orthopaedics-these collaborationsled to innovations in total knee, hip, elbow, and wrist replacements. He hasauthored almost 300 publications in hip, knee, hand, wrist, shoulder, and cervicalspine.
Aside from his pioneering research, Dr. Ranawat has always been a true teacherfor those in training whether in conference, in the operating room or on roundsin the wards. In the OR, he was famous for saying “If you can see it, you can doit.” He has mentored many of the former residents and fellows and has served inleadership positions in most of the important arthroplasty and nationalorthopaedic organizations, including the Knee Society, New York Academy ofMedicine, and American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. Dr. Ranawat hasreceived numerous awards including Lifetime Achievement Awards from the NewYork City Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation, and the American College orRheumatology, among others.
In recognition of his invaluable contributions to the field of orthopaedics, com-mitment to his patients and students, and involvement with the AlumniAssociation, we are privileged to present Dr. Ranawat with the DistinguishedAlumnus Award. A fund has been established in honor of all our distinguishedalumni, and we look forward to honoring more colleagues in the future.
