Thoughts from the Second Floor Front II Sunday in Ordinary Time

January 14, 2018 For some reason, although we will be hearing from the Gospel of Mark throughout this year, the litur-gist has given us a brief, but significant, excerpt from the Fourth Gospel. There was some confusion as to His identity as Jesus began the Public Ministry. John the Baptist had his band of disciples, and in this passage John sends them to Jesus. John points out who Jesus is to his own disciples and to others as well. When John says: Behold, the Lamb of God, those within earshot would have been rightly startled. Even in our parish, which in some ways remains more rural than suburban, the idea of a lamb in 21st century North America would be very different from the image John offers. The lamb to which John is referring is not the white ball of wool, with a pink nose and blue-ribbon around its neck. This Lamb is the Lamb of Sacrifice. What John did that day, in a manner that is entirely prophetic, was to alert his followers and others about the identity of Jesus. The Lord’s identity is a big issue in the gospels. Jesus is often questioned: Who are you? From where do you come? By what authority do you do the things that you do? Fr. Raymond Brown, in a brief work entitled The Community of the Beloved Disciple, pos-its that in John’s Gospel there are disparate groups: Pharisees, Scribes Leaders of the people, an amorphous set simply entitled “the world,” John’s disciples and Jesus’ own disciples. Brown presents that Jesus’ one goal in the Public Ministry is to bring them into union with Him. He sadly fails at this and not everyone responds to His invitation. Culminating in the High Priestly Prayer on the night of the Last Supper, he prays for unity. Which, as a Church, we still labor at achieving. But the effort at unity would not have even been possible without knowledge of Jesus. John pointed Jesus out to his disciples. Who pointed Jesus out to you? In all likelihood, it was your parents. But perhaps it was someone else; a teacher, your spouse, a family member, religious sister or brother, a priest or deacon? When you finish reading this little essay, thank God for that person and ask God to bless them for their effort on your behalf. And now to you. At the end of the gospel excerpt, Simon is presented to the Master and his name is changed to Peter. From that encounter Peter is changed. I thought of that marvelous story Pope Francis told at the World Meet-ing of Families about St. Katherine Drexel meeting Pope Leo XIII. When she asked the Holy Father for mis-sionaries to come to America his response, as Pope Francis told it was: ¿Y tú?,¿qué vas a hacer? And you? What are you going to do? The same question can be put to us, each day. ¿Y tú?,¿qué vas a hacer? In our first reading we have that captivating story of Eli and the young future prophet, Samuel. It took Samuel a while to figure out who was calling him, and he only was able to come to understand who was call-ing him with the help of the aged Eli. His response to the call was beautiful: Speak, Lord. Your servant is lis-tening. All too often in prayer I suspect that our statement twists that sentiment around when we posture not with Speak, Lord. Your servant is listening. But rather: Listen, Lord. Your servant is speaking. We unite ourselves to Jesus, most especially at the celebration of the Eucharist. That unity need not end at the church door as you begin making your way through the parking lot. Point Jesus out to someone in your life. There is not always a great or dramatic intervention needed. A kind word instead of negativity. A gentle gesture rather than a harsh response. A word of appreciation rather than a curse. These are actions of Grace. These are actions of a disciple. As Samuel points out, there is a need to listen for the voice of the Lord. It will probably not come with stained glass windows and organ music. The voice of God will probably be cloaked in the ordinary circumstances of your life. A life that can become extraordinary through your response to the in-vitation from Jesus to join yourself to Him. Faithfully, Msgr. Diamond

WEDDING MINISTRY

We are looking for volunteers to help with wedding re-hearsals and/or weddings. Rehearsals are held on Thurs-day evenings at 6pm and weddings are on Saturdays and sometimes on Friday evening. As a growing parish, we are celebrating more and more weddings and are in need of some help. We would also like to have a group of adults who would perform the ministry of altar server just like we do for funerals. Training will be provided and a schedule set up for cover-age of rehearsals and weddings. Please call the Parish Life Center to volunteer at 610-459-2502

MARCH FOR LIFE A world where every human life is valued and protected.

See page 6 of this bulletin to see how you can participate and support this cause for life.

Again this year the Saint Cornelius "Giving Tree" reached out to those in need. Your generosity benefited the following recip-ients: Catholic Social Services of Delaware County, Mary, Mother of Hope House III in Wilmington, Mothers' Home in Darby and the Saint Cornelius Ministry of Caring for local needs. Addi-tionally, the Giving Tree assisted the outreach programs and schools at St. Ignatius, St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Peter the Apostle in Philadelphia. We thank all who participated in working with the committee, the Shawl Ministry and especially all those who donated items and gift cards which resulted in our ability to help so many in need. We received around 300 coats plus hats, scarves and gloves for the targeted outreach programs and specific gifts requested by some of our charities. Gift cards totaled about $15,000, so we were also able to supply many individuals with financial sup-port in our parish and immediate area as well as individuals in areas served by the charities listed above. If you have any questions please contact MaryAnna Ralph by phone 484-571-1393 or email [email protected] MaryAnna

THE ACTS OF THE

APOSTLES

SNOW CLOS ING The safety of our children both in school and PREP are of the utmost importance. Ice, sleet and snow can come at any time. During the week, Monday through Friday, if the Unionville Chadds Ford School District announces the closing of schools, or a two hour delay because of weather, the 7:30 AM Mass will not be celebrated. It takes a big undertaking to clear the parking lot and have the pathways shoveled. Closing the school and canceling PREP allows our snow removal company to clean up the snow and restore our property to a safe and active place. If schools are closed ALL ACTIVITIES for the day and even-ing are canceled.

Remember - Safety comes First!!

Twenty years ago, Saint Pope John Paul II said to an audience of Catholic educators in New Orleans: “Yours is a great gift to the Church, a great gift to your nation.” Countless people in our country have been blessed by the many gifts of Catholic schools. However, many adults have lost touch with their local Catholic school community. It is time for those people who have been impacted by your school to reconnect with the commu-nity that gave them so much, and give back. With this recognition in mind, the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) is pleased to present the online giving campaign: Many Gifts, One Nation: A Day of Giving to Catholic Schools. This is a time for individuals to give back to their local Catholic school. By leveraging social media, this na-tional day of philanthropy and camaraderie will invite all people across the country who have been impacted by Catholic school education in ways big and small to financially donate at a local level; hopefully, our parish school. WHEN: Scheduled for 24 hours starting January 30, 2018, 9:00am EST to January 31, 2018, 9:00am EST. WHERE: Online! More information to follow. WHY: Because Catholic schools change lives and now is the time to give back!

ON CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME

LAUDATO SI'

Last week’s article, 2018 WORLD DAY OF PEACE message of Pope Francis, Migrants and Refugees, brought out that what brings us together as persons and as humanity is our common aspiration for peace – “a profound aspiration for everyone”. Questioning why so many (22.5 million refugees and 250 mil-lion migrants), Francis states that in addition to a “endless and terrifying sequence of wars, conflicts, genocides, and ethnic cleansing” is “a tragic rise in the number of migrants seeking to flee from growing poverty caused by environmental degrada-tion.” While global migration is expected to continue in the future, Pope Francis sees this as a positive opportunity for everyone, NOT a “gloom and doom” situation: “Some consider this a threat. For my part, I ask you to view it with confidence as an opportunity to build peace.” Given the divisiveness of this issue in US and Europe, as well as globally, how can we, each one of us, come to see the mi-grant and refugee movement as a situation that offers creative opportunities for all – migrants and refugees, local families and individuals, communities, etc.? Pope Francis turns our attention to our inner processes to answer this question:

“With a contemplative gaze” “The wisdom of faith fosters a contemplative gaze that recognizes that all of us belong to one family, migrants and the local populations that welcome them, and all have the same right to enjoy the goods of the earth, whose desti-nation is universal, as the social doctrine of the Church teaches…”

In his encyclical, Laudato Si', Pope Francis calls this: “The Gaze of Jesus”: To see the “trinitarian communion” in all crea-tion, and quotes Saint Bonaventure’s teaching that “each crea-ture bears in itself a specifically trinitarian structure, so real that it could be readily contemplated if only the human gaze were not so partial, dark and fragile.” Only “with a contemplative gaze” can we come to see what Pope Francis sees in the migrants and refugees: “They bring their courage, skills, energy and aspirations, ...treasures of their own cultures….and the creativity, tenacity and spirit of sacrifice of countless individuals, families and communities around the world who open their doors and hearts to migrants and refugees.” Let us ponder and exercise a ‘contemplative gaze’ of Jesus as we encounter what is sure to be a sensory overload of data and emotions in the months ahead regarding our own migrants and refugees.

Diamond and I are working on some ideas with more of a youth group approach that we hope to be able add to our program in the future.

• The 4th and 5th grade classes on Wednesday evenings are being combined and will be held together the remain-der of the year. Jenifer Oberoi had taken both classes before Christmas and will continue to teach the combined class for the remainder of the year. Their curriculum is very closely matched and they are a great group of stu-dents combined. Thank you, Mrs. Oberoi, for your will-ingness to take both classes.

Mid-Year Exam: We will complete the Mid-Year Exam for all students the first week of February. A study guide will be reviewed in class and also sent home for further review. Progress Reports: In the past, progress reports were completed for each stu-dent. However, we will not be doing them this year. We may do them again in the future, but I am not prepared to put them in place this year. I have asked our Catechists to keep parents informed about what is happening in class, if any student is having difficulty with the material, and/or has been absent frequently so that we can work together to help them meet the expectations of the program. Upcoming Calendar: Thursday January 18, 2018, from 7:00-8:30 PM in Walker Hall: Penance/First Communion Retreat for any student that will be making their Penance/First Holy Communion. This is for the student and his/her parents. Wednesday January 24, 2018, at 6:10 PM 3rd grade students and any classes that did not get to tour the church with Msgr. Diamond this year during Wednesday classes will go to the church for a tour. • Tuesday January 30, 2018, at 5:00 PM 6th grade will tour

the church with Msgr. Diamond. We still have a 4th or 5th grade that did not go and that will be scheduled for Febru-ary.

• SNOW DATE Thursday January 25, 2018, from 7:00-8:30 PM: Penance/First Communion Retreat

May God bless you and your families with the richness of his grace throughout 2018!

CELEBRATION OF THE SACRED MYSTERIES

SACRAMENTS Sacrament of Penance - Saturday at 4:00 pm or anytime by appointment

Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick - Please notify the Parish Life Center when a relative is sick or hospitalized. The sacraments of Penance, Eucharist and Anointing of the Sick are a joy and privilege to administer. If you know you are going to the hospital for surgery, please notify Msgr. Diamond and he will be glad to Anoint you after Mass.

Sacrament of Baptism - Congratulations! In co-operation with God’s creative love, you have given your child breath and now you wish to give them Re-al Life through the sacrament of Baptism. You will be your child’s first teacher in the ways of the Faith. During your pregnancy, to help you prepare for this responsibility, we ask you to stop in the Parish Life Center and receive the booklet “You gave them breath, Now give them life.” This booklet will pro-vide information needed to begin your preparation for the celebration of Baptism. Please contact the Parish Life Center at (610) 459-2502 for further information.

Sacrament of Marriage - The love between a husband and wife images for us the love of Christ and his church. What a powerful and awesome thing is the call to the sacrament of Marriage! To assist cou-ples to enter this sacrament, the Archdiocese of Phila-delphia requires at least six months of formation prior to the reception of the sacrament. Those who wish to receive the Sacrament - please call the Parish Life Center to make an appointment to see Msgr. Dia-mond to begin your sacramental preparation. Congratulations for responding to God’s call to Love.

Sacrament of Holy Orders - Jesus said that we are to pray to the Lord of the harvest, that workers will be sent at harvest time. The best way to promote vocations to the diaconate and priesthood is to invite those men whom you would consider would make a good priest or deacon. If you feel the Lord might be asking you to be a priest or deacon, Msgr. Diamond or one of the Deacons will always be available to an-swer your questions and give direction.
