God of power and mercy, you destroy war and put down earthly pride. Banish violence from our midst and wipe away our tears, that we may all deserve to be called your sons and daughters.
Keep in your mercy those men and women who have died in the cause of freedom and bring them safely into your kingdom of justice and peace. We ask this though Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

VII Sunday of Easter May 24, 2020
We are in the midst of the original Novena, nine days of prayer between the Feast of the Ascension and the celebration of Pentecost. While for us it is a time of holy waiting, the original novena must have been a time of holy anticipation, perhaps even a holy fear. Just four short verses before our reading from Acts begins, the original fol-lowers of Jesus were told to wait until they will receive power when the holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. (Acts 1:8) They are given the promise and the task. The promise Jesus makes is the gift of the Holy Spirit and the task He gives is to be wit-ness. What will the arrival of the Spirit mean to them, the original band of believers? They returned to that upper room where there had hidden themselves away in terror for fear of what may happen to them. This is sometimes true of believers in our world. People resist the power of Grace for a variety of reasons and among them is the re-luctance to fully engage the Holy Spirit in anticipation of being asked to do more or witness more or be more active as a disciple. The cause of this resistance or reluctance can be a combination of uncertainty and an unwillingness to change. Yet, all things change. The ancient Greek Philosopher Heraclitus asserted that centuries ago. The story is told of the Englishman Malcolm Muggeridge, who is identified as a journalist and satirist. He helped the world to come to know St. Teresa of Calcutta. He was writing a story on her and observed her closely over a period of days in order to gain information for his report. On one occasion he asked her how she spent her day. In her reply she stated that she wakes and makes a Holy Hour, attends Mass and then goes out on the streets of Calcutta looking for Jesus. Empowered by the Holy Spirit she gave witness to Jesus by caring for the least among us. Muggeridge at one point reportedly said to her: “Mother, I wouldn’t do what you do for a million dollars.” To which she replied: “ Neither would I.” Through St. Teresa’s influence, Muggeridge was received into the Catholic Church, with his wife Kitty, at the age of 79. Over the last several weeks, locked away in the COVID cavern of forced self-quarantining and social dis-tancing, you may have been under the mistaken conviction that you were constrained from looking for Jesus. If she can find Him in the gutters of Calcutta, where can you find Him? Where do you look for Him? Do you look for Him in the face of your spouse, or parents or children or neighbors? In your mirror? There is an aspect of urgency in the effort to search for Him. In the gospel passage, it is almost as if Jesus permits His disciples, and by extension, allows us, to overhear His conversation with the Father when He states that the hour has come. “The Hour” is a construct that appears throughout the fourth gospel. In chapter 3 He responds to the Blessed Mother’s assertion that the wine has run out at the wedding in Cana by replying: My hour has not yet come. Jesus’ “Hour” is not 60 minutes on a clock. The Hour is the climactic event which unfolds in the Passion, Death, Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus. We are told in the Prologue, chapter 1, that Jesus has come into the world and the significance of His coming was to reveal the Father and the accompanying “grace and truth.” That mission is about to be fulfilled in the life-giving sacrificial death He undergoes for all. Through Jesus the Father has been revealed. This is most beautifully articulated in eve-ry prayer we offer at the celebration of the Eucharist which is addressed to the Father through Jesus in the unity of the Holy Spirit. Entering into the closing days of this strangest of Easter Seasons we will be called on to live as Jesus’ Dis-ciples in new ways. We possess the truth and have been given the grace to do exactly that. Did that original band of believers fully comprehend what would be required of them? Probably not. Do we know how and in what ways we will be called on to witness to the truth of the Gospel? Not completely. But even with an incomplete knowledge we can take our direction from the Bishop of Hippo:
Love God and do what you will; whether you hold your peace, through love hold your peace; whether you cry out, through love cry out; whether you correct, through love correct; whether you spare, through love do you spare: In all things, let the root of love be within, for of this root can nothing spring but what is good.

St. Cornelius volunteers care for homeless families through the Family Promise inter-faith min-istry in southern Chester County. Due to the coronavirus pandem-ic, Family Promise is sheltering their guests in a hotel at this time, so there will be no volun-teer responsibilities at the churches. Volunteers are praying and supporting a homeless shel-ter in Philadelphia with lunches during this time. Please consider donating gift cards to Acme,
Aldi or Shop Rite, which are stores close to the hotel. Financial contributions would also be appre-ciated. Mail to: Family Promise, 1156 W. Baltimore Pike, P.O. Box 394, Kennett Square, PA 19348. For questions, please contact Kathy Silvon at [email protected] or call 484-720-8214.

The SCLS will resume our gatherings (in cyber space) on Sunday May 31ST at 2:00 PM. Our gatherings have looked at the works of Graham Green’s The Power and the Glory and selected short stories by Flannery O’Connor and two
works by C. S. Lewis Mere Chris-tianity and The Screwtape Letters. For our next symposium on writ-ers we will look at a writer who has had immense influence on Catholic social causes. Founder of the Catholic Worker Movement and convert to Catholicism Doro-thy Day became a voice for the poor and homeless through her non-violent activism. Her autobi-ography, The Long Loneliness, I think you will find both fascinat-
ing and inspiring as she recounts her journey from Green-wich Village, NY to her conversion to Catholicism. Normally we meet on the second Sunday of the month, however, following the directives of state and local offi-cials, the CDC, Archbishop Pérez and good common sense we had to postpone our usual gatherings until now. On Sunday May 31st we will have a Zoom meeting at 2:00 PM and once again pick up the happy task of exploring the impact and importance of the written word. Check the par-ish web site for the Zoom meeting information.
Eucharistic Adoration Please visit Jesus at church during the week. Even though He is not on the altar in the Mon-strance, Jesus is in the Tabernacle and would be very pleased to have you visit him and pray for our country and an end to this Pandemic. Meditation: January 28, 1938. Today the Lord said to me, “My daughter, write down these words: All those souls who will glorify My mercy and spread its worship, encouraging others to trust in My mercy, will not experience terror at the hour of death. My mercy will shield them in that final battle … “(Diary, 1540). St. Faustina’s Diary We will need a second Permanent Adorer, when Adoration begins again, for the following times on Monday’s, at 9 am, noon, 2, 3, 4 and 7 pm and on Friday’s, at 11 am, Noon, 1 and 2 pm. Please consider being a weekly Adorer for one of these times, spending an hour with Jesus in Adoration. Pray that Je-sus will end this evil virus very soon and heal those stricken by it. Contact:

LEAD THE WAY Urge Congress to Support
those Most Vulnerable in Addressing COVID-19
It is truly a pivotal moment. The world around us has changed and we are experiencing immense uncertainty and loss. At this moment, we must come together as one human family. The Holy Father calls to us, "let us remain united. Let us make our closeness felt to those who are alone and to those who are most stricken." This crisis demonstrates how interconnected we are and how critically important it is to assist those most vulnera-ble both in the U.S. and around the world. You can help lead the way. • You can help support refugees and others on the move
living in crowded settlements with little access to clean water and soap.
• You can help ensure children who rely on that one school lunch can continue to be fed.
How? We invite you to lift your voice to Congress and stand with our human family around the world. Why now? Congress is negotiating its next emergency bill to address COVID-19 right now. We must ensure Con-gress provides funding for international programs that re-duce poverty, keep communities safe and help families survive and thrive. You can help make a difference to prevent the spread of this virus. Your action helps care for vulnerable populations around the world in need of lifesaving as-sistance. For sample letter go to
https://support.crs.org/act/lead-the-way-covid Your letter can make the difference to those
most vulnerable.

The Paschal Mystery culminates in the Ascension of Jesus. After his appearance here on earth in his risen body, and "after giving instructions through the holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had cho-sen" (Acts 1:2), Jesus "was lifted up and a cloud took him from their sight" (Acts 1:9): Christ's ascension marks the definitive entrance of Jesus' humanity into God's heavenly domain, whence he will come again (cf. Acts 1:11)… Jesus Christ, the head of the Church, precedes us into the Father's glorious kingdom so that we, the members of his Body, may live in the hope of one day being with him forever. Jesus Christ, having entered the sanctuary of heaven once and for all, intercedes constantly for us as the mediator who assures us of the permanent outpouring of the Holy Spirit. (CCC, nos. 665-667)
