Fast and Abstinence and Other Acts of

Penance For Lent 2015

The Bishops of the United States prescribe, as minimal obligation, that all persons who are fourteen years of age and older are bound to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday, on all the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday. Further, all persons eighteen years of age and older, up to and including their fifty-ninth birthday, are bound to fast by limiting themselves to a single full meal on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday, while the other two meals on those days are to be light. All the faithful are encouraged, when possible, to participate in Mass and to receive the Holy Eucharist daily, to undertake spiritual reading, especially the study of the Sacred Scriptures, and to participate in parish Lenten devotions as well as Lenten educational programs. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is especially recommended.

Lent 2015 Schedule

Monday: Daily Mass at 8:30 AM and 7:00 PM

There will be no 6:30 AM Mass on Mondays during Lent Adoration after the 8:30 AM Mass Benediction at 3:30 PM in the Chapel Tuesday: Daily Mass at 6:30 AM and 8:30 AM. Confessions at 7:00 PM to 7:30 PM in the Church. The Saturday schedule for confessions will continue. Wednesday: Daily Mass at 6:30 AM and 8:30 AM. Stations of the Cross at 7:00 PM in the Chapel. Thursday: Daily Mass at 6:30 AM and 8:30 AM. Adult Faith Formation at 7:00 PM at the Parish Office lead by Fr David Fernandes. Friday: Daily Mass at 6:30 AM and 8:30 AM. Day of Abstinence

Examination of the Conscience (Part 2)

The Lord says: “You shall love the Lord your God with your whole heart.” 1. Is my heart set on God, so that I really love him above all things and am faithful to his commandments, as a son loves his father? Or am I more concerned about the things of this world? Have I a right intention in what I do? 2. God spoke to us in his Son. Is my faith in God firm and secure? Am I wholehearted in accepting the Church’s reaching? Have I been careful to grow in my understanding of the faith, to hear God’s word, to listen to instructions on faith, to avoid dangers to faith? Have I been always strong and fearless in professing my faith in God and the Church? Have I been willing to be known as a Christian in private and public life? 3. Have I prayed morning and evening? When I pray, do I real-ly raise my mind and heart to God or is it a matter of words only? Do I offer God my difficulties, my joys, and my sorrows? Do I turn to God in time of temptation?

077—PAGE 4

March 8, 2015

Examination of the Conscience (Part 2) con’t 4. Have I love and reverence for God’s name? Have I offended him in blasphemy, swearing falsely, or taking his name in vain? Have I shown disrespect for the Blessed Virgin Mary and the saints? 5. Do I keep Sundays and feast days holy by taking a full part, with attention and devotion, in the liturgy, and especially in the Mass? Have I fulfilled the precept of annual confession and of communion during the Easter season? 6. Are there false gods that I worship by giving them greater attention and deeper trust than I give to God: money, superstition, spiritism, or other occult practices?

St Thomas Aquinas Parish

cordially invites you

to the

Volunteer Appreciation Dinner

on

Saturday, April 18, 2015

at

5:30 PM—Father Crehan Hall

RSVP no later than April 10, 2015

Please contact Roseann Spear at the Parish Office at 215-788-2989 to confirm your attendance. Dinner is a BYOB and you must be 18 to attend. Invitation is extended to volunteer and a guest.

Dear Parishioners, As we look forward to Spring, I want to fill you in on recent developments at our parish. Firstly, it is with sadness that I tell you that Mr. Michael Winstanley, our Choir Director and Organist, is leaving us. Michael was offered a full time position at St. Matthew Church in Philadelphia—where Fr. Michael Davis is now stationed. He hopes that this new job will help to make a dent in his tuition bills. He has served here as Music Director for the last 3 1/2 years and will be greatly missed. We wish him all the best at this new position. His last Sunday Mass will be March 22nd. Secondly, I am happy to announce that Mrs. Amanda Gentile will be our new Music Director. Amanda is a parishioner at Our Lady of Calvary. She is an educator, choir director, cantor, organist, wife and mother of three—with a fourth child on the way! She received her BA in Elementary Education and Fine Arts from Rider University. We welcome her to St. Thomas Aquinas Parish and wish her many happy years here. Thirdly, I ask everyone to seriously consider attending our annual Forty Hours Devotion/Parish Mission on April 19, 20, and 21. I am disappointed but not surprised by the lack of participation in our parish Lenten activities. I hope that this will not be repeated in April. Fr. Bruce Lewandowski, Vicar for Cultural Ministries, is a Redemptorist and a dynamic speaker. We will have adoration all day Monday and Tuesday in chapel and services will be conducted all three nights in the Church. Please put it on your calendar and make it a high priority! Finally, we have had some thefts of rain spouts on the property. The police have been alerted. I am looking into replacing the stolen items with the help of diocesan insurance money. I ask you to please be vigilant—especially if you live in eye shot of the Church property. Please report any suspicious activity to the authorities, and feel free to drive through the property at night if you happen to be passing by the Church. May Our Lord bless your remaining days of Lenten preparation for the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead! God Bless Father David

World Meeting of Families Prayer

God and Father of us all, in Jesus, your Son and our Savior,

you have made us your sons and daughters,

in the family of the Church.

May your grace and love help our families

in every part of the world be united to one another in fidelity to the Gospel.

May the example of the Holy Family, with the aid of your Holy Spirit,

guide all families, especially those most troubled, to be homes of communion and prayer

and to always seek your truth and live in your love.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us!
