ST. TERESA OF AVILA CATHOLIC CHURCH AKRON, NEW YORK

New in our parish library are a few more books which I've mentioned during recent homilies:

• The Screwtape Letters - C.S. Lewis' clever classic about the spiritual struggle against temptation.

• Prayer Primer - Dr. Peter Kreeft says that he's no good at praying, so when he wants to learn how to do something new, he writes a book about it. This is the result.

• The Lamb's Supper - Dr. Scott Hahn's profound explanation of the Mass as the meeting point of Heaven and Earth, based on the Book of Revelation.

• Praying Scripture For A Change - Dr. Tim Grey shows us how to use the Bible for prayer, with a great analogy about wine-making.

I'm happy to see that our church's library has been getting a lot of circulation lately, and I invite you to browse some titles.

Thanks to all who responded to our first public appeal for Bishop Malone's Upon This Rock project. This week's bulletin insert explains how Upon This Rock will set up an endowment for Catholic Charities. This is different from the yearly appeal. This endowment will generate funds yearly based on investments without touching the principle. Once set up, the endowment should last forever with no additional input.

This year, as you've heard, we have no Catholic Charities appeal. Instead, the first $60,000 collected for Upon This Rock will be given directly to Catholic Charities. Then, from the additional funds collected over Upon This Rock's five-year pledge period, 10% of those funds will build the principle for this new Catholic Charities endowment, as explained above.

Next year, all will return to normal and you will receive Catholic Charities pledge cards in the mail. For this year, however, everything is bundled together under Upon This Rock. More information on how you can participate in the combined appeal will be forthcoming. The appeal should conclude at our parish by early May.

Meanwhile, we are entering the home stretch of Lent. Next weekend is Palm Sunday already, and soon follows the mysterious and powerful Triduum. Let's all keep one another in prayer and please the Lord by our mortifications.

May God bless us all,

~ Fr . Dave

Prayer for Vocations

Lord Jesus Christ, Savior of the world, show forth, we beseech You, in Your Church the Holy Spirit with whose power the apostles were so abundantly filled. We thank You for the blessings bestowed upon the work of priests and religious; and we pray that You will add to the number of those who now pray, labor, and sacrifice themselves for Your glory and the salvation of souls. Give them unselfish zeal for Your glory. O good Jesus, give us more priests and religious after Your own Heart! Amen.

THE FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT * APRIL 2, 2017

Religious Education: “See how He loved him” said some of the mourners at the home of Martha, Mary and their brother Lazarus. Today’s Gospel reading opens the door to share thoughts and feelings in the family. Young children may be eager to share what is going on in their lives. But as they grow older they tend to hide what they feel. They aren’t sure what feelings will be acceptable to peers or parents. So let’s offer one another words of encouragement and understanding, for the joyful times as wells as difficult times.

Mark your calendars for St. Teresa’s Annual A to Z Sale - Saturday, April 29th from 9 am - 2 pm in the Parish Hall. Your donations of old “stuff” can be dropped off on Saturday, April

A software engineer, a mechanical engineer, and an electrical engineer are carpooling to work, when suddenly the car stops

running and they pull over. The mechanical engineer says, "I think it's a problem with the engine. I'll have to get out and inspect." The electrical engineer says, "No, no. It's got to be an electrical issue. I will grab my meter and troubleshoot to find out what is going on." The software engineer says, "Nuts to all that. Let's just get out and get back in again."

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:

“Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your

God, for He is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and He relents from sending calamity.”
