Saturday 2:30-3:30pm
Dear friends in the Lord,
It’s just about here! In just
a few days, we will be celebrating
Ash Wednesday on March 1,
2017. We will have a Liturgy of
the Word with Distribution of
Ashes at 10:00 am. We will also
have Mass with Distribution of
Ashes at 5:15 pm and again at 7:00 pm. This year I
have a special Easter gift that I will be giving out early
at the Ash Wednesday celebrations.
As for Lent itself, Pope Francis recently wrote
that Lent “is a new beginning, a path leading to the
certain goal of Easter, Christ’s victory over death.
This season urgently calls us to conversion.
Christians are asked to return to God “with all their
hearts” (Joel 2:12), to refuse to settle for mediocrity
and to grow in friendship with the Lord. Jesus is the
faithful friend who never abandons us. Even when we
sin, he patiently awaits our return; by that patient
expectation, he shows us his readiness to forgive.”
Lent is a favorable season for deepening our
spiritual life through the means of sanctification
offered us by the Church: fasting, prayer and
almsgiving. At the basis of everything is the word of
God, which during this season we are invited to hear
and ponder more deeply.
Sometimes there are questions about fasting,
prayer, and almsgiving. In the Catholic Church, we
fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday wherein
those between the ages of 18 and 59 only eat one full
meal with two smaller meals that do not equal the
full one. That physical hunger acts as a reminder of
our spiritual hunger for Christ. As Catholics, anyone
14 and over also abstains from meat on Fridays
during Lent. We refrain from meat on these days as a
small sacrifice that we can unite to the suffering that
Christ Himself endured in His Passion and Death.
At the end of the day, Lent is the season for renewing
our encounter with Christ, living in his word, in the
sacraments and in our neighbor. The Lord, who
overcame the deceptions of the Tempter during the
forty days in the desert, shows us the path we must

take. May the Holy Spirit lead us on a true journey
of conversion, so that we can rediscover the gift of
God’s word, be purified of the sin that blinds us, and
serve Christ present in our brothers and sisters in
need. Let us pray for one another so that, by sharing
in the victory of Christ, we will be able to
experience and share the full joy of Easter.
Faithfully Yours in the Lord,
Fr. Chris

St. Teresa’s Tithing
As individuals we are called to be good and
generous stewards with God’s manifold gifts.
Tithing is the means whereby we have the
opportunity to give thanks to God; with that
in mind, the community of St. Teresa of Avila
tithes weekly.
The donation this week will go to the
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Donations to this society
go toward finding a cure for blood cancers. One of our
parishioners, Lisa Meyer, will celebrate 8 years cancer free this
year because of their lifesaving work.

Ash Wednesday
March 1, 2017
10:00am: Liturgy of
the Word/
Distribution of Ashes
5:15pm & 7:00pm:
Mass with
Distribution of Ashes
What is Ash Wednesday?
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of our Lenten
journey. Although not a Holy Day of Obligation,
we go to church to receive a sign of the cross on our
foreheads from ashes (ashes from the blessed palms
used on Palm Sunday). This mark is a reminder of
our mortality and a call for repentance. The priest
blesses the ashes and says, "Repent and believe in the
Gospel".
The message of Ash Wednesday Mass is, "Pray like
no one is watching you. Fast like no one is
watching you. Do good like no one is watching
you. God knows."
Something we strive for each and every day; but, it's
highlighted on Ash Wednesday to set the tone for
Lent.

With Saturday evening's Rite of Sending, and
Sunday afternoon's Rite of Election for Andrea, we
have cleared another milestone on our RCIA
journey. As Lent approaches and Easter draws
near, we will pause Tuesday evening to study one
of the great mysteries of our faith, as Fr. Jerry
Schweitzer will join the RCIA group to share his
insights on the Trinity. Please keep our candidates
and elect in your thoughts and prayers as we
continue to make our way to Easter. God bless!
Whoever is united to One of the Three Persons is thereby united to the whole
Blessed Trinity, for this Oneness is indivisible.
