From Father Johnson HOLY MASS, cont.

The Lord’s Own Prayer: Taught by our Savior’s command (“Jesus said to his disciples, when you pray, say this: Our Fa-ther,” etc.) and formed by divine teaching in Sacred Scripture, we now stand and pray as Jesus himself taught us. How many times in our lives have we said the Our Father? Countless times. And yet saying it at Mass has special meaning, because of the peti-tions it contains. “Give us this day our daily bread” refers first, of course, to bread as the symbol of all the food we need to survive. But here it also refers to the Bread of Heaven, the Holy Eucha-rist, which is the food of everlasting life. We can never demand this of God: we can only ask for it. Asking God for our daily bread is the central petition of the Our Father, exactly midway among the seven petitions. The first three are about divine things: that God’s name be hallowed, that his Kingdom come, that his will be done. The last three are about things human: Forgive us our trespasses, lead us not into temptation, and deliver us from evil. The middle one, sharing both human and divine things, is our petition for our daily bread, both what we need to survive on this earth, and what we need to gain eternal life in heaven, the Eucharist. We then end the Our Father with our request for the grace to be forgiving, and also forgiven our trespasses. We must be at peace with our brothers and sisters if we are to receive Holy Communion worthily. That is the reason why we are about to offer each other the sign of peace. Next Week: Getting Ready for the Great Banquet.

3 November ~ Saint Martin de Porres: Born in 1579 in Li-ma, Peru, the illegitimate son of a Spanish father and a devout mother of African and possibly Native American descent, he was quiet, even as a boy spending hours of the night in prayer. At the age of 15, he entered the Dominican Priory in Lima, eventually professing vows as a lay brother in 1603. Having been trained as a barber and medical assistant, he joyfully accepted the lowliest jobs in the friary; he is usually depicted as holding a broom . He was finally assigned to the infirmary, where he spent his life car-ing for both the friars and the local poor, to whom he was greatly devoted and by whom he was deeply loved. He ministered alike to Spanish nobles and to slaves recently brought from Africa. When an epidemic struck Lima, there were in his house 60 friars who were sick out of the total 300, many of them novices in a distant and locked section of the friary . Martin passed through the locked doors to care for them, a phenomenon which was reported in the residence more than once. Along with his daily work in the kitchen and infirmary, Martin’s life reflected extraordinary gifts: ecstasies that lifted him into the air, light filling the room where he prayed, miraculous knowledge, instantaneous cures, and a re-markable rapport with animals. His humility and kindness, espe-cially to those who mocked him, were legendary. He died on this date in 1639 at the age of 59, worn out by his work and penances. He was canonized by Saint John XXIII in 1962. Saint Martin de Porres, pray for us!

DID YOU KNOW? During pregnancy, a woman’s heart physically grows larger in order to accommodate the growing child within her.

Be sure to look at the bulletin board in the narthex for updates on the Spiritual Adoption Program and to see how your baby is growing each month.

THAT SPECIAL POWER OF LOVING THAT BELONGS TO A WOMAN is seen most clearly when she becomes a mother. Motherhood is the gift of God to women. How grateful we must be to God for this wonderful gift that brings such joy to the whole world, women and men alike! Yet we can destroy this gift of motherhood, especially by the evil of abortion, but also by thinking that other things like jobs or positions are more important than loving, than giving oneself to others. No job, no plans, no possessions, no idea of “freedom” can take the place of love. So anything that destroys God’s gift of motherhood destroys His most precious gift to women – the ability to love as a woman. ~ Blessed Moth-er Teresa, Letter to the Fourth World Conference on Women, Beijing, 1995

WE NEED ADVERTISERS FOR OUR BULLETIN! We are switching to a local printer as of January 1, 2015, and will again be responsible for securing advertisements to cover the cost of printing. Ad rates will be greatly reduced and surprisingly affordable. We need to fill every block to cover costs and generate income for the parish. Can you help? Does your company advertise? Do you know someone who does? Please contact Paul Cyr, the Parish Secretary, at 508-672-0423 or [email protected]. Thank you!

Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord, and let perpetu-al light shine upon them. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
