THIRD SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY

Often when we come to the word of

God, we can be confronted by what

we find inside. Today in the reading

from Nehemiah, we find that when

the prophet Ezra read the scroll in the

presence of the people, they wept be-

cause of their disobedience. Similarly,

in the Gospel, we read how attentive

the people in the synagogue were to

Jesus as he went to preach in the

synagogue, but as we will hear next

Sunday, would turn on him later on.

We should learn to see the scriptures

as a great mercy from God through

which we are able to learn more about

his love for us. This love can be

confronting, but it is never a cause for

mourning or hopelessness.

Opening Hymn

I come with joy to meet my Lord,

Forgiven, loved, and free,

In awe and wonder to recall

His life laid down for me.

I come with Christians far and near

To find, as all are fed,

The new community of love

In Christ’s communion bread.

And thus with joy we meet our Lord,

His presence, always near,

Is in such friendship better known:

We see, and praise him here.

Together met, together bound,

We’ll go our different ways,

And as his people in the world

We’ll live and speak his praise. Brian Arthur Wren (b. 1936) alt.

St Saviour’s Cathedral Hymns 24th January 2016

Offertory Hymn:

O thou, who at thy eucharist didst pray

That all thy church might be for ever one,

Grant us at every eucharist to say

With longing heart and soul, “Thy will be

done.”

O may we all one bread, one body be,

Through this blest sacrament of unity.

For all thy church, O Lord, we intercede;

Make thou our sad divisions soon to cease;

Draw us the nearer each to each, we plead,

By drawing all to thee, O Prince of Peace:

Thus may we all one bread, one body be,

Through this blest sacrament of unity.

So, Lord, at length when sacraments shall

cease

May we be one with all thy church above,

One with thy saints in undivided peace,

One with thy saints in one unbounded love:

More blessèd still, in peace and love to be

One with the Trinity in Unity.

Gradual Hymn:

Christ is the King! O friends rejoice;

Brothers and sisters with one voice

Tell all the world he is your choice.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Christ through the ages is the same:

Place the same hope in his great name,

With the same faith his word proclaim.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Let love’s unconquerable might

Your scattered companies unite

In service to the Lord of light.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

So shall God’s will on earth be done,

New lamps be lit, new tasks begun,

And the whole church at last be one.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

St Saviour’s Cathedral Hymns 24th January 2016

Final Hymn

Jesus shall reign where’er the sun

Does its successive journeys run;

His kingdom stretch from shore to shore,

Till moons shall wax and wane no more.

For him shall endless prayer be made,

And praises throng to crown his head;

His name like sweet perfume shall rise

With every morning sacrifice.

Blessings abound where’er he reigns:

The prisoner leaps to lose his chains;

The weary find eternal rest;

And all who suffer want are blessed.

Where he displays his healing power

Death and the curse are known no more;

In him the tribes of Adam boast

More blessings than their father lost.

Let every creature rise and bring

The highest honours to our King,

Angels descend with songs again,

And earth repeat the long amen.

Isaac Watts (1674-1748) alt.

Psalm 19

1. The heavens declare the glory of God:

and the firmament proclaims his handiwork;

2. One day tells it to another:

and night to night communicates knowledge.

3. There is no speech or language:

nor are their voices heard;

4. Yet their sound has gone out through all the world:

and their words to the ends of the earth.

5. There he has pitched a tent for the sun:

which comes out as a bridegroom from his chamber,

and rejoices like a strong man to run his course.

6. Its rising is at one end of the heavens, and its circuit to their farthest bound:

and nothing is hidden from its heat.

7. The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul:

the command of the Lord is true, and makes wise the simple.

8. The precepts of the Lord are right, and rejoice the heart:

the commandment of the Lord is pure, and gives light to the eyes.

9. The fear of the Lord is clean, and endures for ever:

the judgements of the Lord are unchanging, and righteous every one.

10. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold:

sweeter also than honey, than the honey that drips from the comb.

11. Moreover, by them is your servant taught:

and in keeping them there is great reward.

12. Who can know their own unwitting sins?:

O cleanse me from my secret faults.

13. Keep your servant also from presumptuous sins, lest they get the mastery over me:

so I shall be clean, and innocent of great offence.

14. May the words of my mouth and the meditation

of my heart be acceptable in your sight:

O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.
