Page 4: ST. ROSE OF LIMA PARISH · become great avenues to love and follow Christ, but they can also become great obstacles to follow him. On the one hand, many saints grew in faith and love

Today Jesus invites us to sit down and calculate the cost of following him. Before beginning a significant project in our lives, we first sit down to consult someone with more experience than us. We speak about the project, lay down the plan, and ask for the advice of experienced people in that field. For instance, we plan the building of a house, the decision about a career, a long trip, the prac ce of a sport, etc. It is necessary to consult the right engineer, professor, travel agency, or doctor. This procedure is very similar in our voca on to the Chris an life. Before following the Lord Jesus, we must sit down to see whether we will be able to follow him to the cross or we may turn around and abandon him halfway through when the cross approaches. In teaching his disciples to calculate the cost of following him, Jesus speaks about two indispensable aspects of human life, namely, family and possessions. No one is exempt from these two strong es in life. Jesus uses the word ‘hate’ in referring to family and ‘renuncia on’ for the possessions. Jesus comes to bring division rather than peace, as we heard three Sundays ago. We may get very confused, if we do not understand Jesus’ inten on in speaking in these terms to his disciples. If one does not hate his family and renounce all his possessions, then he cannot be a disciple of Jesus Christ. Family and possessions can become great avenues to love and follow Christ, but they can also become great obstacles to follow him. On the one hand, many saints grew in faith and love following the Lord through some of their pious family members or rela ves. Some of these saints came from noble wealthy families. They used their wealth to serve Christ in the needy and poor. We can know about the lives of these holy people since the book of the Acts of the Apostles. However, there were also some saints whose family members, rela ves or possessions tried to pull them away from their love and zeal to follow Christ. These saints had to sit down to reflect on whom they wanted to follow, Christ or the plans and ideas of their loved ones. This was the case of St. Francis of Assisi, St. Rose of Lima, St. Thomas Aquinas, and others. At one point, they had to hate their family members to follow Christ above anyone or anything else. In loving the Lord with all their mind, soul, and strength, they purified themselves from anyone or anything else that will not lead them to Christ. Brothers and sisters, through bap sm, we are called to a holiness of life that does not get away with the challenges that the apostles and saints went through in following the Lord. If we are faithful to our bap smal call, we will arrive at a moment in which we will have to sit down and ask ourselves whom we must choose to follow. Shall we choose the plans and ideas that godless people want us to follow, or are we willing to hate those people and possessions that pull us away from the Lord? If we do not hate these obstacles to follow the Lord, then we may risk living with a divided heart. The cross may approach to die for Christ as the gospel of today encourages us to pick up our cross, but we may not have the faith to suffer for it because our heart is divided among family and possessions. Then, we may choose to run away and abandon our discipleship to Christ.
