FROM THE PASTOR… Dear Parishioners,

Last weekend’s visiting summer missionary, Piarist Father Andrew Berinyuy (from Cameroon, Africa) was a delightful guest. He radiated a genuine gospel joy and a palpable missionary spirit. He ―connected‖ easily with the English-speaking, Korean-speaking and Spanish-speaking parishioners at Masses. He didn’t speak Spanish (his home-country languages are English and French), but he insisted on trying to say a few words at the Spanish Mass (aided by English-to-Spanish translation help from one or two of our parishion-ers). He deeply touched one and all at that Mass with his deliberate and heartfelt words. Thank you for your responsiveness to the missions. You contributed $3924 in that second collection, and we have sent it on to the Propagation of the Faith to forward to the Piarist Fathers. Father Andrew is pictured below with Monsignor Maks and Delia Dela Cruz and Ellie Alcantara in front of the Lord of Pardon shrine set up for last Sunday afternoon’s annual Filipino celebration. We are grateful to the Dela Cruz family for all the prep work and to our Sunnyside neighbor, Monsignor Jonas Achacoso for celebrating that liturgy with grace. You may not know that Msgr. Jonas recently won an award from the Na-tional Catholic Press Association for his regular column in Nuestra Voz, the Spanish counterpart of our di-ocesan newspaper, The Tablet. Congratulations! Below is also a photo of some of the participants at the Lord of Pardon pot-luck that followed the Mass. We’ll print more pictures next weekend. Also, thanks to all at the Lord of Pardon event for the generous $1600 donation to St. Raphael’s. This past week, we had a hall rental (holding/catering) for the TV show, The Blacklist. They had to air-condition Michael Brennan Hall by bringing in a huge generator, large compressor and flexible tubing. It’s ap-parently a ―union‖ privilege the cast and crew have won. Another hall rental, a TV show called Tiara, is possi-ble this coming week. This summer income for the parish is welcome. Our façade restoration on the 37th Street Pastoral Center continues, at a cost hovering around a quar-ter-million-dollars. Depending on the weather, the work should be completed by the start of the school year. This week, we treat the young ministers (Altar Servers and Family Mass Choir) to a mystery outing, in gratitude for their service. We cherish their presence and dedication! -Fr. Jerry Jecewiz

EL RINCON HISPANO

"¿Cuál es el significado e importancia de la transfiguración?"

Respuesta: Como una semana después que Jesús les había dicho claramente a Sus discípulos que Él iba a sufrir, a ser muerto, y resucitado a la vida (Lucas 9:22). ―Jesús tomó consigo a Pedro, a Juan y a Jacobo, y

subió al monte a orar. Mientras oraba, la apariencia de su rostro se hizo otra, y su ropa se hizo blanca y resplandeciente….‖ Aparecieron Moisés y Elías y hablaban con Jesús acerca de Su muerte que pronto ten-dría lugar. Pedro, no sabiendo lo que decía y estando muy asustado, ofreció armar tres enramadas para el-los. Esto es indudablemente una referencia a las enramadas que se utilizaban para celebrar la Fiesta de los Tabernáculos, cuando los israelitas habitaron en tiendas durante 7 días (Levítico 23:34-42). Pedro estaba expresando su deseo de quedarse en ese lugar. Cuando una nube los envolvió y una voz dijo, ―Este es mi

Hijo, mi Escogido; a Él oíd.‖ La nube se levantó, Moisés y Elías desaparecieron y Jesús estaba solo con Sus discípulos, quienes aún estaban muy atemorizados. Jesús les advirtió que no dijeran nada a nadie de lo que

habían visto, hasta después de Su resurrección. Las tres narraciones de este evento se encuentran en Mateo 17:1-8; Marcos 9:2-8, y Lucas 9:28-36.

Indudablemente, el propósito de la transfiguración de Cristo en al menos una parte de Su gloria celestial, fue para que el ―círculo íntimo‖ de Sus discípulos, pudieran tener una mayor comprensión de quien era Jesús.

Cristo experimentó un cambio dramático en Su apariencia, con el fin de que los discípulos pudieran percibir Su gloria. Los discípulos, quienes solo lo habían conocido en Su cuerpo humano, ahora tenían una mayor conciencia de la divinidad de Cristo, aunque no podían comprenderla plenamente. Eso les dio la seguridad

que necesitaban después de escuchar las terribles noticias de Su inminente muerte.

Simbólicamente, la aparición de Moisés y Elías representaba la Ley y los Profetas. Pero la voz de Dios desde el cielo – ―¡A Él oíd!‖ – muestra claramente que la Ley y los Profetas deben cederle el paso a Jesús. Aquel que es el nuevo camino vivo que reemplaza el antiguo; Él es el cumplimiento de la Ley y las incon-tables profecías en el Antiguo Testamento. También, en Su forma glorificada, ellos vieron un atisbo de Su

futura glorificación y entronización como Rey de reyes y Señor de señores.

Los discípulos nunca olvidaron lo que sucedió ese día en el monte y sin duda este fue el propósito. Juan es-cribió en su evangelio, ―Y vimos su gloria, gloria como del unigénito del Padre, lleno de gracia y de ver-

dad.‖ (Juan 1:14). Pedro también escribió sobre ello, ―No se-guimos fábulas ingeniosamente inventadas, sino que fuimos

testigos oculares de su majestad. Pues cuando El recibió honor y gloria de Dios Padre, la majestuosa Gloria le hizo esta

declaración: Este es mi Hijo amado en quien me he com-placido; y nosotros mismos escuchamos esta declaración,

hecha desde el cielo cuando estábamos con El en el monte santo.‖ (2 Pedro 1:16-18). Aquellos que fueron testigos de la transfiguración, testificaron de ello a los otros discípulos y a

incontables millones a través de los siglos.
