FROM THE PASTOR…
Dear Parishioners, This Sunday begins the celebration of Catholic Schools Week. If you or someone you know is consider-ing Catholic School Education, take a copy of this week’s Tablet at the rear of the church and pass it on. This issue highlights various elemen-tary/junior high schools in Brooklyn and Queens and celebrates their giftedness. The Catholic School most physically proxi-mate to St. Raphael’s is St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Academy, just over the Green-point Avenue Bridge in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. It is just one mile away. I teach religion there on Wednesdays, and I can assure you that it is a top-notch place where the students, according to this year’s Catholic Schools Week theme, ―learn, serve, lead, succeed.‖ Formerly considered by some as a ―Polish ethnic school‖ when the neighbor-hood clustered around a big Polish core, the school now has the second-highest state test scores of all Catholic Schools in Brooklyn and Queens (the highest is St. Berna-dette’s in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn). In addition, a very competent Principal, along with very talented faculty and staff and Board of Directors, makes it a vibrant and dynamic place.
For more information, seethe full-page ad on an-other page in this bulletin, or peruse the current issue of the school’s newsletter, posted on the bulletin board of our church vestibule. Better still, take advantage of the invitation to schedule an on-site visit and see for yourself. -Father Jerry Jecewiz

MORE CHRISTMAS PHOTOS…
Usually after our Reyes Magos (Three Kings) celebration in Brennan Hall, the Kings proceed to visit ill or developmentally disabled children in their homes, re-membering them with Christmas gifts as well. This year, because of the large attendance at the January 6th event, the Kings had to postpone their home visits a day or two. The photos show some of the special children who received these loving ―house calls‖.

THIS ‘N THAT
1. After 25 years of ministry at the Apostolic Nunciature (Vatican Embassy) in Washington, DC, Msgr. Maks will make the move back to our diocese in a month or so, reside at Cathedral Prep in Elmhurst, and continue to offer us his services. His weekend assistance has been a great bless-ing to our parish.
2. Confirmation will be celebrated here, together with Queen of Angels parish, on Friday, May 17th, at 5:00 pm. Bishop Raymond Chappetto will officiate. Confirmation meeting (parents & candi-dates) Wed., Feb. 6, at 7:30 pm, in Brennan Hall.
3. In case you missed it, United States Post Office rates change today, January 27th. First-class letters (1 oz.) increase a nickel from 50 cents to 55 cents. However, FOREVER stamps are still valid. If your first-class letter goes over 1 ounce, each additional ounce actually goes down 6 cents —from 21 cents to 15 cents now! Who would have predicted that!
4. The Vino Nuevo Apostolate of our Hispanic community has just formed a Ministry of Consolation for persons who have lost loved ones. This ministry extends to the Latino tradition of the nove-nario (9-day novena), rosaries and/or wake services, and anniversary-of-death (or birthday) re-membrances for 3 years following the loss. In the Hispanic tradition, all ultimately serves the lift-ing or raising of the Holy Cross to enable those in grief to move forward in faith and trust. If you would like to contact this ministry, speak with one of our Pastoral Ministers: Paul Casiano, Maria Casiano or Bogar Casiano. As always, they are at your service.
5. Confirmation candidates are reminded about the upcoming Confirmation meeting (parent plus candidate) on Wednesday, Feb. 6th, 7:30 pm, in Michael Brennan Hall. The Enrollment Cere-mony will follow at the Family Mass on Sunday, February 10th, at 11 am.
6. The February Youth Group gathering will take place on Saturday, February 16th, 6 pm, in Bren-nan Hall. Spread the word!
7. Next Saturday and Sunday, February 2nd and 3rd, the customary occasion for the feast of St. Blase, the individual Blessing of Throats will be offered after the English and Spanish Masses.
NEXT FAMILY MASS: Sunday, February 10th

Refreshments downstairs after each liturgy. Remember, this Februrary, the Family Mass will be the second Sunday of the month, to coincide with World Marriage Day.
