FROM THE PASTOR… Dear Parishioners,
Months ago, here at St. Raphael’s, we conducted a diocesan program entitled CALLED BY NAME. The goal was to surface the names of young people whom we felt should, in discerning their life-calling, hear about the possibility of a church vocation, such as becoming a priest or sister or brother. We thank those parishioners who responded by recommending names.
Last Sunday, six young men of those proposed by our parishioners joined a few dozen other young men from our parish-deanery area for an event at Queen of Angels Church called Project An-drew. After praying Vespers together, we were addressed by the regional vocations representative, Father Jun Hee Lee of St. Mel’s Church. He spoke about the diocesan priesthood and told the story of his own vocation. I noticed some eyes open more widely when he recounted his younger years: skateboarding obsession, martial arts black belt in taekwondo and some graffiti tagging (of which he was not proud!)
Bishop Paul Sanchez then shared his own vocation story, and the half-dozen priests present (including yours truly) then followed suit. The details differed, but a common thread seemed to be God “writing straight with crooked lines” and leading individuals in surprising ways towards priestly ordination. Motivation from priests they knew to “give it a shot” was another recurrent leitmotif.
Questions from the young men present were then welcomed. In the larger group, the inquiries ranged from “Who are the Franciscans?” to “How do you know if and when you are called? Is there a moment when bells and whistles go off?”. In the smaller groups downstairs afterwards, I heard (at my table) questions like “Can a priest have tattoos?” and “If someone has kids, can he become a priest?”. The event ended with all sharing a tasty meal.
The day ignited a spark of discussion, with the further aim of creating a culture actively favor-ing vocations in our parishes. Some of the young men from St. Raphael’s with whom I chatted after-wards said they enjoyed taking part.
Let’s all pray that some hopeful seeds have been sown! - Father Jerry Jecewiz

THIS ‘N THAT
1. We usually do not have the opportunity, in this church bulletin (which goes to press Thursday mornings), to inform you about upcoming funeral ar-rangements for parishioners. However, this time, we can let you know that Abby Margolis will be waked this Sunday afternoon and evening at Lynch’s, and her Funeral Mass will be here this Monday at 11 am. Abby, who lived in Jackson Heights but affiliated here, served in many ways: catechist in our Religious Education program, lector, Communion minister, Food Pantry volunteer (at Corpus Christi Church), and collection counter. Rest in peace, faithful parishioner!
2. A word of thanks to our parishioners who engaged in Operation Rice Bowl during Lent. We forwarded $2712 to Catholic Relief Services to help the neediest folks on planet earth.
