(The following letter was sent to the priests of the diocese this past week)

Dear Brother Priests, Deacons, and Parish Staff,

As of this morning, two parishes within the Diocese of Harrisburg have reported a potential COVID-19 exposure occurring within the liturgical life of their parishes. These have been reported to the proper authorities and we are following their direction. As of now, we have no reason to believe that these two incidents pose a serious concern warranting severe restrictions to those parishes. They have both been following the protocol in place for sanitization and public safety.

This gives us the opportunity to reinforce the absolute necessity for every parish within the Diocese of Harrisburg to follow strictly the directives that have been issued for the restoration of public worship and the safe environments of our parish offices and buildings. We have received reports that not all parishes are consistent in following the protocol.

A few reminders:

Sanitization of public spaces must occur after every liturgical gathering in our churches.

Except in the case of children under 2 years of age and persons with health issues, masks are to be worn as face covering the entire time parishioners attend Mass or any other liturgical event in a parish, including sacramental Confession. They are not permitted to be lowered at any time while in the church except to receive Holy Communion. It is not acceptable for parishioners to lower their face masks while sitting in the pew.

Social distancing is to be strictly enforced. The measure of 6 feet between individuals and family groups is to be maintained while seated and moving. Groups are not to gather outside of our churches for social time. Face masks should be worn until a person has left the church property and distanced himself or herself from the other congregants. It should be underscored that this is an act of charity, above all, not an infringement upon a personal right.

Your diligence in adhering to these guidelines helps to prevent further safety concerns for your parishioners and those in attendance at weddings and funerals. The protocol and directives are not optional.

Next Saturday, we celebrate the Declaration of Independence, our nation’s birthday. The document proclaiming freedom from the British crown and King George III, makes clear in the second paragraph, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of happiness.”

How appropriate these words are today, 244 years later. They starkly remind us of the frailty and shortcomings of men, because “all” didn’t really mean “all” at the time of its writing, for much of its history, nor even in recent years. But the promise of those words are eternal. They are Divinely inspired, and we must continue the effort to form the “more perfect union” spelled out in the Preamble to the Constitution.

At the heart of the success of our nation is the recognition that the power entrusted to government is granted by the governed, and the rights given to the governed come from God. As we commemorate the founding of our country, let us celebrate together with our parish family. Saturday July 4th, whether at the 9:00 am service, or live stream, or outside at 5:00 pm on the grounds of the new school, we extend the invitation to gather in prayer for the unity and preservation of our nation. Peace and tranquility can be found when we recognize that all good things come from God. When we celebrate Mass, we celebrate the Eucharist. Eucharist translated from Greek means “Thanksgiving.” The Eucharist embodies a more perfect union with Him. We could use more of that right now.

ROAD TO KINDNESS As we travel on our journey through life, we are often challenged to change the way we are so that we “fit in.” It could be in the workplace, in school, or with our neighbors. We may be challenged to do something or take an action that does not make us feel right. Additionally, our lives have become more complicated with how we communicate – now over zoom or the many social media outlets. It takes a strong, confident person to stay focused on doing what is right and not change the way they act. God wants us to do the right things and to be ourselves – to be authentic in our actions and to be kind and caring! This is God’s Way – “The Road to Kindness!” A statement that was made during the past year is that it is important to be compassionate, caring, inclusive, and kind – because that is what matters! This statement came from Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson during an acceptance speech. He also went on to say that “it is nice to be important, but it is more important to be nice!” When we are challenged, it is time to be nice and kind to everyone we meet!
