TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION “Ordinary Time” began for us this week. On the old calendar, the feast of the Presentation, still more than two weeks away, was the last day of the Christmas season. Sad-ly, Bethlehem is hardly a place of peace on earth these days. The ancient Christian community has been largely uprooted by political strife. The Church of the Nativity stands (barely) in remarkable disrepair and disorder in Manger Square. The roof is crumbling, the major doorways are blocked, the wir-ing is faulty, and the worship life is disrupted by quarrels among Eastern Christians. The church was founded by the Emperor Constantine in 325, destroyed in a Samaritan revolt in 539, and rebuilt by the Emperor Justinian. When the area came under Mus-lim control in 638, the holiness of the church was respect-ed, and in return Christians allowed Muslims to pray in the south aisle, a right still upheld. Earlier in that century, in-vading Persians were ordered to destroy all churches, but when they saw the magi carved over the doorway of the Church of the Nativity, they spared it out of respect for their ancestors who bore gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the same city. The Crusaders restored and redecorated the church by the twelfth century, and it is their plan that sur-vives. Down a few stone steps is a stone grotto with a sil-ver star marking the place of Christ’s birth: when the star was stolen in 1847 it triggered an international crisis that exploded into the Crimean War. Since 1852, the church has been shared by the Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, and Armenian Churches. The Greeks are in charge of the grotto, but don’t enjoy the best of friendships with the Armenians. Catholics have the care of the Chapel of the Manger, and avoid the squabbles by a separate entrance to the Franciscan monastery church of St. Catherine. Pray for peace in Bethlehem!

PASTOR’S CORNER: Baptism Although the Church celebrated the Baptism of the Lord this past Monday, this feast day that culminates the Christmas Season is worthy of our reflections as God says, “You are my beloved Son; with You my favor rests.” The journey to sainthood begins at baptism. Just as the Holy Spirit descends upon Jesus at His baptism, so baptism for each and every person is the gateway to life in the Spirit. The words of God the Father to Jesus are echoed to each person baptized. Each of us shares in this title God gives as we wear the white garment of baptism. Baptism is what marks our birth into the Church, the Body of Christ. We become adopted sons and daughters of God whose favor rests upon us; original sin is washed away; we are purified; we begin our journey into eternal life. Just as a newborn baby needs nourishment from mothers and fathers to grow and become strong, so Christians need spiritual nourishment to grow in faith At the beginning of this new year, it would be good to find out more about our own baptism. Do you know when you were baptized and the church where it took place? When you find out the date, put it on your calendar to celebrate the anniversary of your entry into Christianity and the Church. This year offers a new opportunity to deepen life in the Holy Spirit by becoming more attentive to God’s Word in prayer. As you travel, use apps like “Pray as you go” or “MassTimes.com”. God desires to speak into your heart. Let Him! Are you ready to listen? Are you ready to Come and See with eyes of faith?

Did You Know? What is Original Sin washed away at baptism? The doctrine of original sin is that “in” Adam all have sinned; and the doctrine of justification is that “in” Christ all are righteous. Namely, through the first Adam all have died and through the second Adam (Christ) all have life. Romans 5:12, “sin came into the world through one man and death through sin.” Romans 5:15-19, “Many died through one man’s trespass...for the judgement following one trespass brought condemnation...Because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man...Then as one man’s trespass led to condemna-tion for all men...By one man’s disobedience many were made sinners.” Verse 16 further explains, “for the judgement following one trespass brought con-demnation”, verse 18 says, “Then as one man’s tres-pass led to condemnation for all men…” These pas-sages explain biblically the Church’s doctrine of original sin; “first sin”. Therefore, every human being created by God has the “propensity” to sin. Let us be reminded that in order for some-thing to be considered a sin, there must be knowledge of sin, there must be intention to sin, and there must be the act of sin—all three must take place to be sin. The sin of Adam affected all human nature; to actual-ly use free will to say “NO” to God, to disobey God. As the Catechism says, “original sin is called ‘sin’ only in an analogical sense; it is a sin ‘contracted’ and not ‘committed’ - a state and not an act” (CCC 404). We are born with a fallen nature separated from God as a result of Adam’s sin. We have to be reborn in baptism to be “in” Christ, to become a member of the body of Christ, to be saved; born into Adam’s body into condemnation; born into Christ’s body to receive the invitation to salvation, God’s gift!

THE LAMB OF GOD “Behold the Lamb of God!” We hear this phrase eve-ry Sunday at Mass, but there’s a good chance that many Roman Catholics do not know who in the Bible originally spoke it. The phrase appears only in the Gospel of John, on the lips of John the Baptist, who utters it twice. In to-day’s Gospel reading, John proclaims Jesus as the Lamb of God, and two of John’s own disciples then follow Christ. A little bit later Andrew, who heard John and then followed Jesus, brings his brother Simon to be re-named Cephas, or Peter. A careful look at these Bible verses shows us the mission of everyone baptized into the Body of Christ: we must always proclaim our faith in Christ, so that others will follow him. We may not know how the will of God might work through those we bring to Christ; that is not the point. The point is that our ongoing mission as a church is to bring others to Christ, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.
