St. Paul’s Episcopal Church All are welcome, no exceptions!
St. Paul's is an affirming and inclusive Christian community striving through worship, love and service to welcome all people just as God created you. No matter where you are on your journey of faith, and whether you are
single, married, divorced, separated, or partnered, our welcome knows no boundaries of age, race, ethnicity, culture, gender expression, sexual
orientation, economic condition, physical or mental ability. We believe that God delights in the diversity of creation and so do we!
All are welcome, no exceptions!
Third Sunday after Epiphany January 22, 2017, 10:30 A.M.

Welcome to worship this morning!
The Holy Eucharist Rite I
The Liturgy of the Word Processional Hymn # 304 I come with joy to meet my Lord
Priest Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit .
People And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.
Priest Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith:
Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. Glory to God: Gloria in excelsis S 278

The Collect of the Day Third Sunday after Epiphany
Priest The Lord be with you.
People And with thy spirit.
Priest Let us pray. Give us grace, O Lord, to answer readily the call of our Savior Jesus Christ and proclaim to all people the Good News of his salvation, that we and all the whole world may perceive the glory of his marvelous works; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
The First Lesson Isaiah 9:1-4 But there will be no gloom for those who were in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he will make glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness on them light has shined. You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.
Lector The Word of the Lord.
People Thanks be to God. Psalm 27:1, 5-13 27:1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom then shall I fear?* the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom then shall I be afraid? 27:5 One thing I asked of the LORD; one thing I seek;* that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life;
5
27:6 To behold the fair beauty of the LORD* and to seek him in his temple. 27:7 For in the day of trouble he shall keep me safe in his shelter;* he shall hide me in the secrecy of his dwelling and set me high upon a rock. 27:8 Even now he lifts up my head* above my enemies round about me. 27:9 Therefore I will offer in his dwelling an oblation with shouts of great gladness;* I will sing and make music to the Lord. 27:10 Hearken to my voice, O LORD, when I call;* have mercy on me and answer me. 27:11 You speak in my heart and say “Seek my face."* Your face, LORD, will I seek. 27:12 Hide not your face from me,* nor turn away your servant in displeasure. 27:13 You have been my helper; cast me not away;* do not forsake me, O God of my salvation. The Second Lesson 1 Corinthians 1:10-18 Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in agreement and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same purpose. For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there are quarrels among you, my brothers and sisters. What I mean is that each of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ." Has Christ been divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, so that no one can say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.)
6
For Christ did not send me to baptize but to proclaim the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its power. For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Gradual Hymn # 661 They cast their nets in Galilee The Gospel Matthew 4:12-23 Priest The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew People Glory be to thee, Lord Christ. Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: "Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned." From that time Jesus began to proclaim, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near." As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea for they were fishermen. And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fish for people." Immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him. Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness among the people.

Priest The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise be to thee, Lord Christ.
The Sermon
The Reverend Andrew Bro
Silence for meditation
We stand to affirm our faith by praying the Nicene Creed.
The Nicene Creed
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen
and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of
the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of
one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he
became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified
under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in
accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the
Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will
have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the
Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the
Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism
for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to
come. Amen.

*Every week we will pray for a different international church in the Anglican Communion as part of the Anglican Cycle of Prayer. We also will pray weekly for churches and ministries in the Diocese of Chicago and our Companion Dioceses as
part of the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer. The Confession Priest Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God.
Silence (kneel or stand) In unison Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against thee in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved thee with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in thy will, and walk in thy ways, to the glory of thy Name. Amen. Priest Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer II
Sursum Corda
Priest The Lord be with you.
People And with thy sprit.
Priest Lift up your hearts.
People We lift them up unto the Lord.
Priest Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People It is meet and right so to do.
Priest
It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God.
Because in the mystery of the Word made flesh, thou hast caused a new light to shine in our hearts, to give the knowledge of thy glory in the face of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying,
Sanctus: S 114 Holy, holy, holy
13
Priest
All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, for that thou didst create heaven and earth, and didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until coming again.
For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took bread; and when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me."
Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, "Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me."
Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.
And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the Body and Blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ.
And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our souls and bodies.
14
Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this Holy Communion may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost all honor and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. AMEN. Priest And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, In Unison
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be
done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our
trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever
and ever. Amen.
The Breaking of the Bread
Silence is observed after the bread is broken Priest Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; People Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. Agnus Dei: S 158 Fraction Anthem: O Lamb of God

The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.
The Episcopal Church invites all Christians to receive communion. The host is placed in your open hands; please assist in guiding the chalice to your lips, or dip the host in the wine. We have gluten free hosts available, ask the priest at the rail. It is acceptable to receive only the bread or the wine. If you would rather not
receive communion, you are invited to come to the rail for a blessing. Simply cross your arms over your chest and the priest will say a prayer for you.
Communion Hymn # 321 My God, thy table now is spread
16
When all have received Communion, the Priest leads the following prayer:
In Unison
Almighty and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of thy everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.
The Blessing Priest
May Christ, the Son of God, be manifest in you, that your lives may be a light to the world; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always. Amen. The Procession into the World Hymn # 530 spread, O spread, thou mighty word
Dismissal

They lived for many years in Ames, Iowa, where she was on the faculty at Iowa State University and he was dean of a private Episcopal school and earned a master’s degree in playwriting. Father Bro is a man of many talents who remains active in his retirement, and he has the second longest continuous priestly tenure in the Diocese of Chicago. Grace Place Outreach Opportunity
One of the ways St. Paul’s supports Grace Place Campus Ministry at NIU is by providing a few Wednesday suppers for their fellowship time which is followed by a worship service. This consists of making food at home and dropping it off at Grace Place on Wednesday where they are able to re-heat, dish up and serve themselves when they are ready.
If you would like to be part of a team that will provide a meal (dividing the meal courses make it manageable), please contact Jocelyn Prall at [email protected] or call 815-762-0886.
The goal will be to provide two meals this semester. Rev. Amy Fallon of Grace Place needs to know soon if we are able to participate this semester. She says the students enjoy having a homemade meal from St. Paul’s.
