A Loving Church, Making a Difference in the World
Letter from the Pastor
Well, as we’ve journeyed through Lent, at this point Easter is rapidly approaching. I don’t know
about you, but it seems like Lent flew by for me. It’s been a very busy season here at the church. Between
Bible study, the extra services, and everything else that was going on, it feels like it’s been a nonstop sprint.
However, I‘m thinking about Lent and Easter in particular. This is a season of renewal. A time where
we can part with the old ways and become closer to God. Many of us have already worked on giving up
things for Lent—or at least engaged in some sort of spiritual discipline that we’ve been working on. Well, in
this time of renewal, we can carry that one.
Just as Jesus resurrected from the tomb, we too can have a sort of resurrection ourselves. The church
can as well. We live in a time when we’re told that the church is dying—that people aren’t attending in
numbers like they used to, and that giving is down. While these things may be true, they also benefit us with
an opportunity: the chance to bring ourselves back from the dead. During this Easter season, I encourage
everyone to think of things that can grow the church. Think about what we can do to help the church grow
and expand.
And as we go through this process of renewal, both for the church and ourselves, keep in mind that
this doesn’t happen in a day. We know that any significant change takes time. Even when Jesus was
crucified, it wasn’t until 3 days after, that he rose from the dead. Growing the church takes time and
commitment. Enriching our spiritual lives takes focused energy and vigilance. So, as we embark on this
endeavor, let us remember that it isn’t a quick fix—that it takes a willingness and a dedication to become
what God wants.
So, as Easter comes about, let us remember what the resurrection is all about. Let us remember that
we are able to go through this as well, both personally and as a church. There is so much good we can do in
the world; we just must be willing to find and do it.
See you in the pews,
Pastor Jeff

Turning Point Mission (continued from page 2)
Turning Point was founded to provide shelter and services for
victims of domestic violence. Recently adding sexual assault victims,
Turning Point believes in the right of all people to live free from
violence. Turning Point seeks to reduce the incidents of domestic
violence and sexual assault and the devastating effect it has on the
lives of the victim and her children. Turning Point strives to provide
a safe haven and services for victims and educate the general public.
An 800 number is maintained 24 hours a day/7 days a week for
victims’ convenience and safety. This number does not appear on

We do not have all the final figures at this time; they will be relayed as soon as the information

Blue Squills
by Sara Teasdale, 1920
"How many million Aprils came
before I ever knew
how white a cherry bough could be
a bed of squills, how blue.
And many a dancing April
when life is done with me,
will lift the blue flame of the flower
and the white flame of the tree.
Oh, burn me with your beauty
then,
oh, hurt me tree and flower,
lest in the end death try to take
even this glistening hour...”

Pastor Jeff and Church Council— Gene and I would like to thank You and the Church
Council for your generous gift card to Applebee's!
We enjoyed a meal out and we appreciated your
kind words that accompanied the gift card
expressing your gratitude for Gene's service to the
community of Marthasville.
THANK YOU ALL!! Ann & Gene Jenkins
Carrie and I feel about the members of St. Paul’s the same way the Apostle Paul did about the Philippians when he wrote in 1:3, “I thank my God upon every remembrance of you.”
During my recovery from knee surgery, we certainly felt the love and support of St. Paul’s for your love, care, and kindness. We truly appreciate the gifts of the good food and the heartfelt wishes for my recovery expressed in your prayers, cards, visits, and phone calls.
The expression is “God’s love is ours to share.” Thank you so much for sharing God’s love with me. It has made a difference. May God richly bless you.

HELP WITH BICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION NEEDED
Cathie Schoppenhorst and I are co-chairs of the Marthasville Bicentennial
Committee. There are some big events coming up in which help is needed. The first is
the Marthasville to Peers on the Katy Trail event on May 21, 2017. The second
is a historical walk through St. Paul’s Cemetery on May 28, 2017.
The biggest event, for which the most help is needed, is the Heritage Festival
Bicentennial Celebration on June 17-18, 2017. Here are just a few areas in which
help is needed for this event: help setting up and putting away; moving tables and chairs;
guiding vendors to their assigned work areas; parking; working in the soda trailer;
hosting visitors to the Grabs house; supervising a pedal tractor pull; furnishing and
driving a golf cart; and many other jobs to be done.
If you would be willing to help make the bicentennial celebration a huge success by
volunteering to work in one of the areas, please call me at 433-5474. Thank you.

—A COMMITTEE CHAIR IS NEEDED—
St. Paul’s UCC is planning to have a Taco/Nacho Stand at the Bicentennial Celebration Festivities on June 17-18, 2017.

Food For Thought "In April, we cannot see sunflowers in France, so we might say the sunflowers do not exist. But the local farmers have already planted thousands of seeds, and when they look at the bare hills, they may be able to see the sunflowers already. The sunflowers are there. They lack only the conditions of sun, heat, rain and July. Just because we cannot see them does not mean that they do not exist." ––Thich Nhat Hanh
