Seeking to Know, Grow In, and Show the Ways of Jesus
Summertime Thoughts from the Pastor
I’m sitting out on the back deck of my new house—
traffic noise in the background,
the city gearing up for a new day;
I’m wondering where the summer has gone?
We’ve been so busy it seems—
not just buying and selling a house (fingers crossed)
but busy at church—
a summer full of special services,
VBS,
reconnecting with our sister UCCers through the Heritage Cluster (six churches in all),
trying to work together for the good of all;
planning a weekend of service—wouldn’t you know the weekend of our Chicken Dinner.
Still, we have our part--collecting 300 boxes of mac and cheese.
I’ve recently counted—we’re not quite there yet. Will we make it?
So, in the blink of an eye summer has slipped by—
kids are in school already,
rally day just around the corner,
confirmation kicking off with an overnight event.
I can feel the seasons begin to shift, can you?
I know the summer sun still packs some punch, but I sense it weakening.
The daylight doesn’t seem to stretch quite as far as it used to;
Fall is just around the corner--my favorite season—
colorful, cooler, a true masterpiece of design--from heaven, of course.
I’m taking a sip of my morning tea.
I need to concentrate,
not get so far ahead of myself that I miss the blessing of this day—
wrapped up as it often comes in chores and grass mowing
and newsletter articles--overdue.
As you can tell, my mind struggles to wrap around it all,
but then as if by grace,
time opens up,
a break appears,
and all gets accomplished--a typical summer day.
To the congregation: I hope you are taking some time to enjoy these last days of summer; and not letting stress, frustration,
and anxiety get to your soul. I think of the words of Jesus in Matthew 6.25ff. Jesus was addressing a very anxious crowd.
He said, “Consider the lilies of the field, not even Solomon in all his glory was arrayed as one of them.” So enjoy the time
and let God’s blessings overtake you.
Much love,
Pastor Donna

AUTUMN TID BITS The Planet—On the first day of autumn, the sun is aligned with the center between the North and the South of the earth. On that day, the light and dark hours are exactly the same length. This is called ‘equinox’, derived from the Latin word ‘aequus’ which means ‘equal.’
Standing Eggs?—There are only two days of the year when you can stand an egg on its end, the autumn and spring equinox. To do this you will need an egg. (It does not have to be hard-boiled.) Place the egg on a hard, flat surface on its largest end. Carefully pull your hands away and it should remain upright.
What happens to plants?—Yellow, orange and variations thereof always reside in the pigmentation of tree leaves, but they are overpowered by the abundance of green from the chlorophyll in the leaves. Come autumn, when the sun weakens and days grow shorter, the amount of chlorophyll in leaves diminishes, allowing the other pigments in the leaves to show through. Red and purple leaves are actually caused by the presence of sugars from sap that is trapped inside of the leaves.
Autumn for animals—Squirrels do not hibernate, they collect and bury nuts the entire autumn! They rely on storing nuts to be able to eat during winter. When they do come out in winter, they are usually tunneling under snow to find the food they buried during the fall. The nuts they bury, but don’t retrieve, sprout into new trees.

“Early bird” suggestion: School supplies are
currently at unbeatable prices. In October, our “Extra
Step” is Operation Christmas Child. When the boxes
arrive, we scurry to find items to fill them. With school
supplies at such low costs right now, it might be worth
the savings to pick some of those items up to pack in
your boxes next month.
