Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Christ is Risen! "Alleluia!" At the Last Supper, Jesus took the bread and wine, declared them to be his Body and Blood, gave them to

his disciples, and instructed them to "do this in memory of me." (1 Cor. 11 :24). When together we celebrate Mass, we not only experience our unity as living members of the Body of Christ,

but we also receive Him--body and blood, soul and divinity--in the Holy Eucharist. This is so precisely because he is not to be found among the dead, but among the living, and that is our Easter joy.

The Catechism of our faith explains further, "When the Church celebrates the Eucharist, she commemorates

Christ's Passover, and it is made present: the sacrifice of Christ offered once for all on the Cross remains ever pre-sent." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 1364)

My prayer this Easter Season is for all the members of our Archdiocese to experience the love of Christ

through Sunday Mass. The Eucharistic Prayer speaks of this love, which summons us, in turn, to be loving, merciful and charitable toward others.

Communion with the Risen Christ at Mass is meant to guide every moment of our daily life. He calls us to

recognize Him in those who are sick, troubled, or spiritually lost; those in the grip of addiction or mental illness; or those who have wandered away from the practice of their Faith. Yes, we pray for them, but we must also look deeper within our hearts, asking God to guide us in finding more of ourselves to share, so together, we are truly present to hose who need us most. Thank you for all that you do for your parish and for our archdiocesan Church. May the peace of the Risen Christ be with you and your loved ones. Happy Easter! Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Leonard P. Blair

Archbishop of Hartford

SAINT FRANCIS AND THE CROSS OF CHRIST How can one look at the figure on the cross without asking: What is the nature of creative and redemp-tive love? What is truly creative power? What it means to talk about love is laid out for us on the cross. And it is this sense of divine love—made concrete in the Incarnation and completed in the suffering on the cross—that was so transformative in the saint’s own life. We must not forget how the legend of his initial conversion to religious life begins before the cross in the form of the now-famous San Damiano crucifix. Vorreux describes that experience of the saint before the cross and how the young would-be saint would understand what was depicted before him:God Waiting for him over the altar was a great Byzantine Je-sus that the poor man of Assisi particularly liked because it represented a redeemer at once friendly and triumphant. This savior did not seem to say to the faithful, “Look how I suffered for you!” but “Look how much I love you!” It was “a Christ of peace and persuasion.” It is not a God who is vindictive, vengeful, sadistic, or punish-ing that speaks to the heart of believers, but a God of love. It is a God who suffered on the cross precisely because of love, not despite it. And this love, this passion for humanity, touched the life of this Italian saint in a permanent, life-altering way. SO, HOW DO WE KNOW THAT JESUS IS RISEN FROM THE DEAD?

"There is an Easter hymn that says, “You ask me how I know He lives, He lives within my heart.” Now I think that on a personal level this answer is perfectly legiti-mate. But when it comes to engaging in a conversation in the public square, or in letters to the editor, or in conversa-tion with coworkers, then I think it is critical that Chris-tians be able to present objective evidence in support of our beliefs. Otherwise, our claims hold no more credibil-ity than the assertions of anyone else who claims to have a private religious experience. Fortunately, Christi-anity is peculiar in that it is a religion which is rooted in historical events. It makes claims which can therefore be investigated historically." -Dr. William Land Craig in his lecture on The Evidence of Jesus' Resurrec-tion (Southampton Civic Hall, UK)

He lays out 4 major points: 1. After His crucifixion, Jesus was buried in a tomb by

a member of the Jewish Sanhedrin named Joseph or Arimathea

2. On the Sunday morning following his crucifixion, Jesus’ tomb was found empty by a group of his women followers

3. On multiple occasions and under a variety of cir-cumstances, different individuals and groups of people experienced appearances of Jesus alive after his death.

4. The original disciples believed that Jesus was risen from the dead despite their having every predispo-sition to the contrary.

Meet our Brothers~on the path to sainthood! The Friar Martyrs of

Pariacoto, Peru, Blesseds Michal & Zbigniew

An evening with Friar Noel Danielewicz, OFM Conv.

Wednesday, April 11, 7 PM Saint Paul Church Hall

Invite your family & friends!

April 11 – Blesseds Michal & Zbigniew – We welcome the return of Fr. Noel, a native of New Britain, the son of the late John and Jennie Danielewicz, a member of Holy Cross Church, a graduate of Holy Cross School and St. Thomas Aquinas High School. A Conventual Franciscan Friar, Fr. No-el is a member of the Province of Our Lady of the Angels and the Friary of St. Stanislaus in Chicopee, Massachusetts. He presently ministers as the Chaplain for the Felician Sisters and the Franciscan Friars in Enfield, CT and as spiritual as-sistant to the Secular Franciscans. He is excited about the opportunity to share the life of two young Friar missionaries, martyrs, and recently named blesseds of the Church. Their story is a timely Easter witness to the Resurrection of the Lord, as they proclaimed the Gos-pel and gave their lives in building up the struggling Church Community of Pariacoto, Peru. April 25 – Autism – A Culture of Life presentation that ex-plores the spectrum of behaviors, characteristics, and treat-ments associated with Autism May TBD – Church History – Fr Charles will continue dis-cussing the events in church history following the Council of Trent in the latter half of the 16th century. (This event is being rescheduled after one of the March snow storms.)

UNSCRAMBLE TODAY’S GOSPEL WORDS:

Passover example served feet Love

What is the most important holiday on the Catholic calendar?

Holidays are days set aside to commemorate spe-cial occasions or celebrate feasts and anniversaries. Holiday comes from the words "holy day" which we

take from our life of faith. More than a significant day, it connects us with God in a unique way, allowing us not only to remember, but also share in the events which are part of God's plan of salva-tion. Our humanity is joined to the divine and we are made holy. The most important "holy day" is Easter. When Jesus died and rose again, he destroyed the ultimate weapon of sin, which is death, and made it possible for us to have eternal life. There is not another day of more im-portance. Without the Resurrection, St. Paul tells us, our faith is in vain. Easter is commemorated each time we cele-brate the Mass. It is the ritual-the making present again-that recalls to the present moment the paschal mystery. We pro-claim the mystery of faith: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. Some feasts may be celebrated with more fanfare or secular attention, such as Christmas. But Jesus was born for Easter. Without Easter, there would be no Christmas. Easter is at the very core of what it means to be Christian. ©2009 Liturgical Publications Inc
