O ne of the scribes came to Jesus and asked him, "Which is the first of all the commandments?" Jesus replied, "The first is this: Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these." The scribe said to him, "Well said, teacher. You are right in saying, 'He is One and there is no other than he.' And 'to love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself' is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices." And when Jesus saw that he answered with understanding, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." And no one dared to ask him any more questions.

E n aquel tiempo, uno de los escribas se acercó a Jesús y le preguntó: "¿Cuál es el primero de todos los mandamientos?" Jesús le respondió: "El primero es: Escucha, Israel: El Señor, nuestro Dios, es el único Señor; amarás al Señor, tu Dios, con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma, con toda tu mente y con todas tus fuerzas. El segundo es éste: Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo. No hay ningún man-damiento mayor que éstos". El escriba replicó: "Muy bien, Maestro. Tienes razón, cuando dices que el Señor es único y que no hay otro fuera de él, y amarlo con todo el corazón, con toda el alma, con todas las fuerzas, y amar al prójimo como a uno mismo, vale más que todos los holocaustos y sacrificios". Jesús, viendo que había hablado muy sensatamente, le dijo: "No estás lejos del Reino de Dios". Y ya nadie se atrevió a hacerle más preguntas.

The love of God produces love of our neighbor

As God created man to his own image and like-ness (Gn 1:26), so did he appoint for man a love after the image and resemblance of the love which is due to his own divinity. He said: "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart; this is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neigh-bor as yourself." Why do we love God? "The cause for which we love God," says S. Bernard, "is God Himself;" as though he had said: we love God because he is the most sovereign and infinite goodness. And why do we love ourselves in char-ity? Surely because we are the image and like-ness of God; and whereas all men are endowed with the same dignity, we love them also as our-selves, that is, as being holy and living images of the divinity. For it is on that account… that he makes no difficulty about calling himself our father and us his children; it is on that account that we are capable of being united to his divine essence by the fruition of his sover-eign goodness and felicity; it is on that account that we receive his grace, that our spirits are associated to his most Holy Spirit and made, after a fashion, a participant of his divine nature (2P 1:4)... And therefore the same charity which produces the acts of the love of God produces at the same time those of the love of our neighbour. And even as Jacob saw that one same ladder which touched heaven and earth serving the angels both for descending and ascending (Gn 28:12), so we know that one same charity extends itself to both the love of God and our neighbor.

El amor de Dios, fuente del amor al prójimo Así como Dios «creó al hombre a su imagen y semejanza» (Gn 1, 26), así también ha ordenado un amor para el hombre a imagen y semejanza del amor que se debe a su divinidad: «amarás, dice, al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón; es el primero y el más grande de los mandamientos. Ahora bien, el segundo es semejante a este: Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo» ¿Por qué amamos a Dios? «La causa por la cual amamos a Dios», dice San Bernardo, «es Dios mismo», como si dijera que amamos a Dios porque él es la soberanísima e infinita bondad. ¿Por qué nos amamos a nosotros mismos con caridad? Ciertamente, porque somos «imagen y semejanza de Dios». Y puesto que todos los hombres tienen esta misma dignidad, les amamos también como a nosotros mismos, es decir, en calidad de santísimas y vivientes imágenes de la divinidad. Es en esta calidad que Dios no tiene ninguna dificultad en que llamarse nuestro Padre ni en llamarnos sus hijos; es en esta calidad que somos capaces de estar unidos a su divina esencia por el gozo de su soberana bondad y felicidad; es en esta calidad que recibimos su gracia y que nuestros espíritus están asociados al santísimo espíritu suyo, «hechos partícipes de su naturaleza divina» (2P 1,4)... Es entonces así que la mis-ma caridad que produce los actos del amor a Dios produce, igualmente, los del amor al prójimo. Así como Jacob vio que la misma escalera tocaba el cielo y la tierra, sirviendo a los ángeles tanto para bajar como pa-ra subir (Gn 28,12), sabemos también que un mismo amor sale de nosotros para amar a Dios y al prójimo.
