PAUL’S FAMILY TODAYS GOSPEL Jesus said to the Twelve: "Fear no one. Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna. Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father's knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father. But whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my heavenly Father." PRAYER FOR THE REDEDICATION OF ST. JOHN’S CATHEDRAL ON JUNE 24th, 2017 IN PATERSON

To you, O Good and Gracious God, who built your holy Church upon the apostles with Jesus Christ its cornerstone, we come with thanksgiving for allowing us to rebuild our Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist. Listen graciously to our prayers that what we have made beautiful on earth may truly be your dwelling place where the faith is proclaimed, the sacraments celebrated and charity increased. As we rededicate our mother church, help us to grow into the temple of your glory, so that, constantly renewed by your grace, we may be gathered by your hand into the heavenly city, the New Jerusalem. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

GOSPEL REFLECTION

Throughout Jewish history it was traditional for Jews to demonstrate repentance through washing ceremonies. John the Baptist was preaching repentance for the coming of God's reign. His baptism may have been related to the purifying washings of the Essenes at Qumran near the

was God's anointed one. John answered that his baptism was only a preparation for "one mightier" who would aptize with "the Holy Spirit and fire" (v 16). Although Jesus had no need of repentance, he entered the murky

waters where the people had been baptized, thereby uniting himself with sinful humanity. The baptism of Jesus was another "epiphany," or manifestation of the divine presence. While Jesus was praying, the Spirit descended upon him, and God's voice was heard confirming Jesus as the "beloved Son" (v.22). On Calvary, Jesus would undergo a baptism of fire that would bring salvation to the whole world (Lk 12:49-50). This transforming fire would be poured out on the Church at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4).

PARISH MINISTRY “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” 1 Peter 4:10

Today’s reading is part of the instructions Jesus gives to his disciples after he has commissioned them to proclaim the approaching Kingdom of heaven (10:1-42). As we already know, Matthew addressed a predominantly Jewish-Christian community, for whom Jesus embodied the fulfillment of the Old Testament. His Gospel is divided into five long discourses that remind us of the Pentateuch, the five books of Moses. In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus is the new Moses, the new Lawgiver

Lawgiver, and the new Teacher. At the time this Gospel was written (c.85), the early Christian communities were suffering persecution and some were losing their faith in the face of opposition. In this brief text, the phrase, “Do not fear,” appears 3 times. With these words, Jesus encouraged the disciples and attacked the fears that could make them abandon their mission. Jesus assured them that their persecutors could destroy the body but never the soul. The coming of the Reign of God was inevitable and fear must not prevent the disciples from proclaiming it. Fear cannot prevent us from proclaiming the gospel and its demands. Jesus promises that we will never be alone in our efforts to do what is right. The final judgment before God will be based on the disciples’ faithfulness to Jesus during the controversies that are part of their mission. For Reflection: What fears keep me from sharing my faith in God? Ridicule, criticism, loss of job or status, rejection, etc.? Have I ever given in to unethical behavior because, “everyone else is doing it,” or, “No one will ever know?”

HER ESSENTIAL WISDOM—A CALL TO SERVE “Let us not be afraid to be humble, small, helpless to prove our love for God. The cup of water you give the sick, the way you lift a dying man, the way you feed a baby, the way you teach a dull child, the way you give medicine to a sufferer of leprosy, the joy with which you smile at your own at home—all this is God’s love in the world today.”—Mother Teresa’s words.

As always, our parish needs volunteer catechists for the coming school year. Would you like to be one of them? No experience necessary. Numerous catechists are needed for the various grade levels, as well as sacrament preparation programs. If you are interested in serving our Lord by sharing your time with our young parishioners, please contact Kathy Militello at the Parish Office (973)340-1300 and she will explain our program and answer any questions you may have. REMEMBERING THE PRESENCE OF JESUS CHRIST IN THE SANCTUARY

Our Lord Jesus Christ is always present in the sanctuary; let us remember in these summer months His presence in the Eucharist by being conscience of our attire. Please dress appropriately for Mass. Thank you for your cooperation.

MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR:

How quickly time passes by. It has now been six years since I have been appointed your Pastor here at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church. I don’t want to appear repetitive, but once more, it is a blessing and joy to see how St. Paul’s has grown into a vibrant and joy filled parish community, all due to parishioners like you. Because of you, our parish is strong, stable and alive.

So many accomplishments have taken place during the past six years, all too numerous to name, but most meaningfully, I am so ecstatic and delighted that the long awaited Elevator has finally been installed and put to use, thanks to all our much-loved parishioners support and generosity.

We, as a parish, continue to celebrate the diversity of our Catholic heritage of many cultures, many countries, and many languages in one body: St. Paul’s Family. Thank you all for your time and talents in helping make St. Paul’s one of the finest parishes in the Diocese of Paterson.

You have been so accepting, so generous, so kind, so understanding and so supportive to me during these six years I have been your Pastor. You have blessed my life so much since I came here in June, 2011. The years have been great and I appreciate all of you. I thank you all for your love, prayers and support. There are not enough words to express my heartfelt gratitude to all of you for allowing me to serve you. May God bless you.

Fr. Leonardo Jaramillo, Ph.D

Padre Leonardo Jaramillo, Ph.D
