PRAYER BEFORE DIVINE WORSHIP

Almighty God, You have given us this good land as our heritage. Grant that we remember Your generosity and constantly do Your will. Bless our land with honest industry, truthful education, and an honorable way of life. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion, from pride and arrogance, and from every evil course of action. Grant that we, who came from many nations with many different languages, may become a united people. Give those to whom we have entrusted the authority of government the spirit of wisdom, that there may be justice and peace in our land, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

ORDER OF DIVINE WORSHIP (Please silence your cell phones and mobile devices during our worship time.)

Welcome and Announcements

Opening Hymn, 966: “Before You, Lord, We Bow”

1. Before You, Lord we bow, Our God who reigns above And rules the world below, Boundless in pow’r and love. Our thanks we bring In joy and praise, Our hearts we raise To You, our King! 2. The nation You have blest May well Your love declare, From foes and fears at rest, Protected by Your care. For this bright day, For this fair land — Gifts of Your hand — Our thanks we pay. 3. May ev’ry mountain height, Each vale and forest green, Shine in Your World’s pure light, And it’s rich fruits be seen! May ev’ry tongue Be tuned to praise And join to raise A grateful song. 4. Earth, hear your Maker’s voice; Your great Redeemer own; Believe, obey, rejoice, And worship Him alone. Cast down your pride, Your sin deplore, And bow before The Crucified. 5. And when in pow’r He comes, Oh, may our native land From all its rendering tombs Send forth a glorious band, A countless throng, With joy to sing To heav’n’s high King Salvation’s song!

Invocation Pastor: In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Response: Amen. Confession and Absolution (based on Psalm 85, ESV) Pastor: Lord, you were favorable to your land; you restored the fortunes of Jacob. Response: You forgave the iniquity of your people; you covered all their sin. Pastor: You withdrew all your wrath; you turned from your hot anger. Response: Restore us again, O God of our salvation, and put away your indignation toward us! Pastor: Show us your steadfast love, O Lord, and grant us your salvation. Response: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We

have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

Pastor: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Response: Amen.

Litany of Response (based on Psalm 85, ESV) Pastor: Surely his salvation is near to those who fear him that glory may dwell in our land. Response: Faithfulness springs up from the ground, and righteousness looks down from the sky. Pastor: Yes, the Lord will give what is good, and our land will yield its increase. Response: Righteousness will go before him and make his footsteps a way. Hymn of Response: “God of Our Fathers”

1. God of our fathers, whose almighty hand Leads forth in beauty all the starry band Of shining worlds in splendor through the skies: Our grateful songs before your throne arise. 2. Your love divine has led us in the past; In this free land by you our lot is cast; Oh, be our ruler, guardian, guide, and stay; Your Word our law, your paths our chosen way. 3. From war’s alarms, from deadly pestilence Make your strong arm our ever sure defense. Your true religion in our hearts increase; Your bounteous goodness nourish us in peace. 4. Refresh your people on their toilsome way; Lead us from night to never ending day; Fill all our lives with heav’n born love and grace Until at last we meet before your face.

Prayer of the Day

Old Testament Reading: Zechariah 9:9-12 9Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 10I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the war horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow shall be cut off, and he shall speak peace to the nations; his rule shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. 11As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit. 12Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; today I declare that I will restore to you double.

Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord. Response: Thanks be to God.

Epistle Reading: Romans 7:14–25a 14

We know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin. 15

I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. 16Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. 17So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 18For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. 19For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. 20Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 21So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. 22For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, 23but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. 24Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!

Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord. Response: Thanks be to God.

Gospel Reading: Matthew 11:25–30 25At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; 26yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 27All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Response: Praise to you, O Christ! Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored, He has loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword His truth is marching on. Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on. He has sounded from the trumpet that shall never call retreat He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! Be jubilant, my feet! Lord’s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. O beautiful for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain, For purple mountain majesties Above the fruited plain! America! America! God shed His grace on thee, And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea! O beautiful for heroes proved in liberating strife, Who more than self their country loved, And mercy more than life! America! America! May God thy gold refine Till all success be nobleness, And ev'ry gain divine! O Beautiful for patriot dream That sees beyond the years Thine alabaster cities gleam, Undimmed by human tears! America! America! God shed His grace on thee, And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea!

MEETING AND ACTIVITY NOTICES FOR THE WEEK OF JULY 5-12, 2020

LIVE STREAMING OF WORSHIP SERVICES: Our 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service is streamed live on the Internet. To view the 10:30 a.m. service, go to the church Web site at www.splcwaco.com, click on the link “LIVE STREAMING” on the home page, and select which service you would like to view (current or archived). You may also view the livestream via the church Facebook page: www.Facebook.com/StPaulWaco. The Sunday worship folder for this Sunday can also be found on the church Web site (www.splcwaco.com). NEXT PHASE OF ON-SITE WORSHIP BEGINS JULY 5, 2020

Beginning Sunday, July 5, 2020, we will begin the next phase of on-site worship at St. Paul Lutheran Church. This has been a calculated process with the safety of attendees in mind each step of the way, especially our seniors and others in the high risk category. During the month of June, primarily surveying those attending our Senior’s Service with concerns for their safety in mind, we asked if they would feel safe with a self-distancing practice without the use of the PVC guides. With their affirmative response, the next phase was set for July, namely to remove the PVC guides that had been put in place as a safety measure when we began the initial phase process. So, July 5 begins the next phase as the PVC guides have been removed and safe self-distancing without the guides becomes the practice. We ask that everyone please continue to register on-line for on-site worship attendance. This registration process serves several purposes. It assures that we can accommodate on-site worship attendees. It helps us plan for ample worship folders for the services. And, finally, if we were to have a case of COVID-19 reported by one of our on-site worshippers, the registrations will help us contact all attendees at that service in an expedient manner. Thanks again to all of you for your patience in this process. Our goal remains to maintain a safe worship environment for those attending on-site worship. Admittedly, we have been overly cautious, not wanting to find ourselves in a situation as has been reported with other churches who did not establish safe practices and suddenly had large numbers of coronavirus outbreaks among their ranks. As we all know, dealing with a pandemic is uncharted territory. Please know we are trying to do the best we can to provide a safe on-site worship environment each step of the way. Also, please continue to pray that the Lord will bring this COVID-19 pandemic to an end sooner rather than later.
