It holds for us the noon of Gods inmate and surprising presence in the lives of those who least expect to receive Gods mercy. We saw a glimpse of this in last weeks Gospel [Luke 18:9-14], with the parable of the Pharisee and the Publican and how the laer when home jusfied aſter seeking Gods mercy for his sinfulness. He was exalted because of his humility. Todays gospel passage begins with Jesusentry into the city of Jericho, a well-posioned city in the Jordan Valley, which because of its locaon and trade brought an abundant amount of wealth to the Romanscoffers. Here in Jericho we meet Zacchaeus, a tax collector who had achieved a senior posion within his profession. He is a man of great wealth [v.2]. As a tax collector the audience would realise that his wealth came from his taxing the people more and so keeping the takings. Although a wealthy tax collector he is despised and socially on the outer. There is, however, a certain restlessness in Zacchaeus. Luke informs us that he tried to get a glimpse of Jesus, going to extreme means in order to see him [vv 3-4]. His efforts are rewarded when Jesus noces him in the tree and invites himself to go to the house of Zacchaeus [v. 5]. Perhaps Zacchaeus had heard of Jesuslove and associaon with tax collectors and he had a desire to meet him. Perhaps Zacchaeus had heard about Jesus by communicang with other tax officials. In his loneliness and isolaon, Zacchaeus is reaching out for God. And so, we find that God has discovered him. From this point the life of Zacchaeus is changed forever. Through this encounter with Jesus Zacchaeus begins his road to conversion. He goes to great lengths to show the community that he is genuinely a changed man. In finding Jesus and the mercy, acceptance and friendship that comes with this encounter he was willing to use half his property to give to the poor. The other half he would use to make good – four mes over – the money that he took unlawfully from others [v.8]. We can see something of the determinaon of the widow in the Gospel two Sundays ago [Luke 18:1-8], where her persistence and determinaon won her some jusce from the judge. What begins as a story about sinfulness, avarice and isolaon becomes a story of salvaon and redempon and a reminder of the mission of Jesus. Jesus himself announces today that he has come to seek out and save what is lost.It is a story that reminds us of the surprising ways in which God comes into our lives with his mercy, grace and call to conversion. Zacchaeuswillingness to see what kind of man Jesus was resulted in his conversion and salvaon. He risked everything in order to encounter Jesus. This episode reminds us of the process of conversion that is offered to us in Christ. If we truly seek Gods mercy and forgiveness, then it has to be lived out in a life that is truly converted. We cannot expect Gods forgiveness for our wrongdoing and then simply go back to our sinful past. Like Zacchaeus we need to live out our forgiveness by living a life closer to Gods ways. St Francis de Sales reminds us that we not only should seek forgiveness for our sins, but we should also give up our desire for our past sins. Its a difficult, but necessary road to conversion. Dear friends, This Sunday’s Gospel [Luke 19:1-10] contains another story of

God’s mercy and grace in the life of a sinner. It holds for us the

notion of God’s intimate and surprising presence in the lives of

those who least expect to receive God’s mercy. We saw a glimpse of this in last

week’s Gospel [Luke 18:9-14], with the parable of the Pharisee and the Publican and

how the latter when home justified after seeking God’s mercy for his sinfulness. He

was exalted because of his humility. Today’s gospel passage begins with Jesus’ entry

into the city of Jericho, a well-positioned city in the Jordan Valley, which because of

its location and trade brought an abundant amount of wealth to the Romans’ coffers.

Here in Jericho we meet Zacchaeus, a tax collector who had achieved a senior

position within his profession. He is a man of great wealth [v.2]. As a tax collector

the audience would realise that his wealth came from his taxing the people more and

so keeping the takings. Although a wealthy tax collector he is despised and socially

on the outer.

There is, however, a certain restlessness in Zacchaeus. Luke informs us that he tried

to get a glimpse of Jesus, going to extreme means in order to see him [vv 3-4]. His

efforts are rewarded when Jesus notices him in the tree and invites himself to go to

the house of Zacchaeus [v. 5]. Perhaps Zacchaeus had heard of Jesus’ love and

association with tax collectors and he had a desire to meet him. Perhaps Zacchaeus

had heard about Jesus by communicating with other tax officials. In his loneliness

and isolation, Zacchaeus is reaching out for God. And so, we find that God has

discovered him. From this point the life of Zacchaeus is changed forever. Through

this encounter with Jesus Zacchaeus begins his road to conversion. He goes to great

lengths to show the community that he is genuinely a changed man. In finding Jesus

and the mercy, acceptance and friendship that comes with this encounter he was

willing to use half his property to give to the poor. The other half he would use to

make good – four times over – the money that he took unlawfully from others [v.8].

We can see something of the determination of the widow in the Gospel two Sundays

ago [Luke 18:1-8], where her persistence and determination won her some justice

from the judge.

What begins as a story about sinfulness, avarice and isolation becomes a story of

salvation and redemption and a reminder of the mission of Jesus. Jesus himself

announces today that he has ‘come to seek out and save what is lost.’ It is a story

that reminds us of the surprising ways in which God comes into our lives with his

mercy, grace and call to conversion. Zacchaeus’ willingness to see what kind of man

Jesus was resulted in his conversion and salvation. He risked everything in order to

encounter Jesus. This episode reminds us of the process of conversion that is offered

to us in Christ. If we truly seek God’s mercy and forgiveness, then it has to be lived

out in a life that is truly converted. We cannot expect God’s forgiveness for our

wrongdoing and then simply go back to our sinful past. Like Zacchaeus we need to

live out our forgiveness by living a life closer to God’s ways. St Francis de Sales

reminds us that we not only should seek forgiveness for our sins, but we should also

give up our desire for our past sins. It’s a difficult, but necessary road to conversion.

Like Zacchaeus, do we in our times of difficulty and spiritual isolation seek the

company of Jesus? Perhaps in this coming week we can examine our lives and

identify anything that could be isolating me from God and others, and like

Zacchaeus have the determination to seek Jesus’ mercy and forgiveness and so be

restored to the community and God. God’s mercy is always available to us – we

only need to seek it and ask for it and live it.

Volunteer -Wardens Needed Wardens or collectors are required for 9.30am Mass and 11am

Mass. Two collectors at 9.30am are sadly, for us, returning to their

home country. If you would like to be a collector at the 9.30 am

Mass please contact David Pigott on 0411 297 581 or the

Cathedral Office on 8839 8411. Wardens have to be registered

members of the parish.

Why Do We Have Two Collections at Mass?

This is a question that is often asked . The two collections that are

taken up at Mass each week are equally important and are used

for two distinct purposes.

• The First Collection- The money the first collection raises goes

to the Clergy Support Foundation and is used to support the

daily living expenses of the priests in the Diocese.

• The 2nd collection, which includes the planned giving

program, is the main source of our parish income. The second

collection funds are used for the day to day running of our

parish.
