Liturgical Environment Ministry Corner Week One: Hope Sunday, Dec. 1 - Saturday, Dec. 7

Over the four weeks of Advent the Body of Christ is asked to

reflect on the virtues of Hope, Peace, Joy and Love. Your local

Environment Ministry invites you to reflect on these virtues

as represented by the candles on our Advent wreath/banners.

The color purple is used to represent spiritual awareness,

wisdom, tranquility. Thousands of years ago, the faithful held

fast to the prophecies that the Messiah would arrive, and

they ardently hoped that God would fulfill His promises to

them. The first week of Advent honors that longing and can

inspire us to contemplate His coming in our lives daily and at

the end of time.

THE GIVING TREE

Dear St. Patrick’s Parishioners,

This year, when choosing an ornament off The Giving Tree, please keep in mind the children ages 10-12 years old, which happens to be our largest group. Gift cards are a great idea for the older kids. Thank you to everyone for helping to brighten a child’s Christmas. We appreciate your generosity and kindness and could not do this without your support.

Sincerely, Kelly Matosich

Are you a divorced Catholic who is interested in knowing about the annulment process? There is hope! Pope Francis

has made the annulment time less lengthy because he wishes those in need to be able to be married in the church. We are

here to help you understand and navigate this process. Please call Jerri Fife @ 489-2680 for more information.

CHRISTMAS NOVENA MASSES! Christmas is in the air! All are invited to join in our first ever St. Patrick’s Simbang Gabi, or Misa de Gallo or Misa de Aguinaldo or Christmas Novena Masses. The theological thrust of Simbang Gabi is to cherish the spirit of Advent not only in our individual and personal preparation, but also in our preparation as a community, as a family of God united in worship, in prayer, and in sacrifice. It is a gift of sacrifice as we wake up early in the morning, alter our regular day’s rhythm, to bring our intentions to the altar of God together with our brothers and sisters. Within the ritual of Simbang Gabi, children will process to the altar bringing an offering of an empty manger, mantle, vigil candles, and flowers; advent song is sung simultaneously. We’ll create a home for Jesus; changing the face of refusal of the first Christmas. Simbang Gabi originated from the Missa Aurea (golden Mass) practiced by the Roman Catholic Church. Please bring you family and friends…

December 9 & 10, 2019 | Saint Patrick’s Church

ADVENT RETREAT GIVEN BY FR. MATT PENNINGTON

“Advent can be Hope, Peace, Joy & Love”

“Whenever I think of Advent, my mind immediately descends to the endless responsibilities required in preparation of Christmas. Presents need to be purchased, cards need to be addressed, there are social gatherings and parish responsibilities that must be attended to. For many years, Advent represented a towering stack of obligations and ‘to do’ lists. Recently, I have come to appreciate the fact that the weeks of Advent are intended to be a retreat preparing us to celebrate the birth of Jesus and preparing ourselves for the second coming. Advent actually means “coming.” It has taken me awhile to let go of the million and one pre-Christmas tasks and stop to pray, reflect, cultivate gratitude and consider the spiritual ramifications of this time of year. Consequently, I am inviting you to join me as the Saint Patrick’s Catholic Community enjoys a mini-retreat in Advent. I will be celebrating a daily Mass on Monday and Tuesday, December 9th and 10th. The Eucharistic liturgy will be followed by a short ‘Breaking Open the Word,’ in your parish hall. And on those same two evenings we will gather together in the church for an evening prayer. These days are meant to refresh the soul and re-orient the mind into the true meaning of Advent. Please join me, Father Matt Pennington as we sing together, pray together and reflect on the ordinary miracles of the God who lives amongst us.”

About Fr. Matt Pennington: Fr. Matt Pennington is the Pastor of Nativity of our Lady Catholic Community in San Luis Obispo, Ca. He is a graduate of Norte Dame University and is a contributing writer to Today’s Liturgy Magazine. Father Pennington published this year a book of reflections entitled Journal of a Country Priest.
