Our God is coming. The time of exile the long separation of humankind from God due to sin is about to end. This is the good news proclaimed in today's liturgy. Isaiah in today's First Reading promises Israel's future release and return from captivity and exile. But as today's Gospel shows, Israel's historic deliverance was meant to herald an even greater saving act by God - the coming of Jesus to set Israel and all nations free from bondage to sin, to gather them up and carry them back to God. God sent an angel before Israel to lead them in their exodus towards the promised land (see Exodus 23:20). And He promised to send a messenger of the cove-nant, Elijah, to purify the people and turn their hearts to the Father before the day of the Lord (see Malachi 3:1, 23-24). John the Baptist quotes these, as well as Isaiah's prophecy, to show that all of Israel's history looks for-ward to the revelation of Jesus. In Jesus, God has filled in the valley that divided sinful humanity from himself. He has reached down from heaven and made His glory to dwell on earth, as we sing in today's Psalm. He has done all this, not for humanity in the abstract, but for each of us. The long history of salvation has led us to this Eucharist, in which our God again comes and our salvation is near. And each of us must hear in today's readings a personal call. Here is your God, Isaiah says. He has been patient with you, Peter says in today's Epistle. Like Jerusalem's inhabitants in the Gospel, we have to go out to Him, repenting our sins, all the laziness and self-indulgence that make our lives a spiritual waste-land. We have to straighten out our lives, so that eve-rything we do leads us to Him. Today, let us hear the beginning of the gospel and again commit ourselves to lives of holiness and devotion.

Meditación del Papa Francisco La primera cosa que ha hecho Juan, grande, es anun-ciar a Jesucristo. Otra cosa que ha hecho, es que no se ha apoderado de su autoridad moral. A Juan se le había dado la posibilidad de decir «Yo soy el Mesías», porque tenía mucha autoridad moral, todo el mundo iba donde él. Y el Evangelio narra que Juan le decía a todos que se convirtieran. Y los fariseos, los doctores veían esta co-mo su fuerza: «Era un hombre recto». Le preguntaban si era él el Mesías. Y, en el momento de la tentación, de la vanidad, podía poner una cara de circunstancia y decir: «Pero, no lo sé...» con una falsa humildad. Sin embargo ha sido claro: «¡No, yo no lo soy! Detrás de mí viene uno que es más fuerte que yo, del que no soy digno ni de atarle la correa de sus sandalias». Juan ha sido claro, no ha robado el título. No se ha apoderado del trabajo. Esta, por tanto, es la segunda cosa que ha hecho él, «hombre de verdad»: No robar la digni-dad. (Cf. Papa Francisco, homilía en santa Marta, 2/7/2014) Reflexión San Juan Bautista fue enviado al mundo para ser testi-go del hecho más extraordinario nunca antes pensado ni imaginado. Toda su vida fue predicar la conversión y el arrepentimiento de los pecados, gritándolo con sus palabras y obras. Y ejerció su labor con gran celo, ya que conocía la magnitud de su misión. Gracias a Dios, el papel de San Juan Bautista sigue estando vivo aun hoy en día. Varios hombres y mujeres continúan predicándonos con su vida que sí es posible arre-pentirnos y vivir totalmente dirigidos a Cristo. Escu-chémosles. Dios nos habla a través de ellos, pues ellos sólo son sus mensajeros. Y nosotros hagámonos también testigos, pues infinitas son las gracias inmere-cidas que hemos recibido, y ya que las hemos recibido gratis, démoslas gratis (Mt 10, 8). Propósito Predicaré con mi testimonio y con mis palabras a mis seres queridos que Jesús está cerca.
