16th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

REST IN THE LORD

For several weeks we have listened to readings that have recounted just how arduous the work of prophets and disciples can be. In today's Gospel, the Lord Jesus listens to the reports of those he had sent out "two by two" to minister to the people. After the apostles re-ported what they had done, Jesus, recognizing their fatigue, says, "Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest awhile" (Mark 6:31). Perhaps this is what the Lord is telling his disciples in the year 2018 as well. We need to pause on our journey of discipleship and simply rest in the Lord. Sunday Mass provides many opportunities for quiet times, particularly during the periods of silence following the readings. Why not take the time today to allow the saving word of the Lord to penetrate your heart during those silent times? Ask the Lord to renew you in body, mind, and spirit for the ar-duous work of discipleship. — Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Vocationist Corner

Grant that I may die to self and to the world, and that Jesus may live in me, in

turn, I may live for You alone, O Divine Trinity, indwelling in my soul! Grant that all my thoughts may be di-

rected toward You, as are those of the Cherubim, and that all my affections

may become flames of love for You, as are the Seraphim. May all my senses be engaged in serving You like so many

Angels. Grant that every action of mine may truly be acts of the purest and most intense love for You.

Are you going on vacation?

Many of our families are planning to get away for some summer fun and relaxation in the next few months. We pray that your vacation time will be safe and a source of many happy memories. However, please do not take your parish offering with you. Each summer our parish struggles to juggle the bills as Sunday offerings decrease significantly. If you find that you tend to forget your envelope more often during the less structured weeks of summer, please consider our electronic giving program.

ARCHDIOCESAN MISSION COOPERATION APPEAL

DIOCESE OF GIKONGORO—RWANDA

The Diocese of Gikongoro is located in the Annuario Pontificio. It was opened in March 30th, 1992, and it is the youngest among the 9 Catho-lic Dioceses in Rwanda. It covers an area of 2,057 km2 (794.21 mile2 ). According to the statistics of 2016, the total population of the diocese is about 583,500 with a Catholic population of 222,467, about 38.12%. The diocese operates in its three deaneries and 14 parishes, with 56 chapels and 1,662 small Christian Communities. The diocese has 48 di-ocesan priests, 102 seminarians in minor seminary and 40 in major seminary, 75 religious (most of them work in the 10 small clinics and in the schools throughout the diocese), and 97 catechists. In 2016, we had 6,634 catechumens, 11,030 baptisms, 4,763 first Holy Communion, 6,610 Confirmations, and 1,237 marriages.

The diocese also has 49 nursery schools with 2,518 students, 100 primary schools with 85,031 students, and 44 high schools with 17,129 students. Of course, there are no school buses to transport the children to and from the schools, and in some areas children have to walk several miles to attend school. There are inadequate textbooks and classroom furniture. The diocese does all it can to help educate as many children as possible. We have built a number of schools to provide education for the rural poor children.

In this Missionary Cooperation Plan Program, our diocese would like to continue the project of developing Kibeho apparition’s site and to initiate the new projects. Our dio-cese is in charge of Kibeho, the only site of the Vatican approved Marian apparitions in Africa. Since the beginning of the apparitions in 1981, especially after being officially ap-proved in 2001, Kibeho became a place of prayer and pilgrimages from all over the world, and most of all, it became a place for reconciliation between individuals and com-munities especially among Rwandans after the genocide against the Tutsi in 1994.

Besides that, as the statistics show, there is much to be done in the area of evangeliza-tion. As the population grows we realize that we need more priests. Luckily, we have some seminarians but we have financial problems looking after them. We also need to build infrastructure for our own diocesan seminary to accommodate the many semi-narians, but the means are not there. Still, we rely heavily on catechists who are responsible for the spiritual forma-tion of people in the absence of priests. There is need for

financial assistance to afford their formation so they can in turn help in catechizing the thousands of people still to be evangelized. (excerpted from the letter of Most Rev. Célestin Hakizimana, Bishop of Gikongoro Diocese, Rwanda to Archbishop Joseph Cardinal Tobin).

Deacon Dominick will be speaking about this years’ Mission Appeal at all Masses next weekend.

Please donate generously. Your support will enable them to bring hope and the

Good News of Jesus Christ to their people.
