“Do not be amazed! You seek Jesus of Naza-reth, the crucified. He has been raised, He is not here.” These words still ring in our ears and hearts from the proclamation of the East-er Gospel from Mark, Chapter 16. What news for those women, the disciples and us. The mystery of this Resurrection event rumbles through the ages to our present moment. Christians like us called to embrace this powerful display of Life are challenged, yet energized as we share Christ’s risen presence. Our Triduum and Easter celebration remain fresh in our memory this week of Easters. I am so grate-ful to the hundreds of people who gave their time, treasures and talents for the Holy Week, Triduum and Easter celebrations. Thanks to all of you who came to pray these holy days. I and so many others were spirit filled because of your presence in shar-ing faith! We are still scraping wax, putting away booklets, rearranging chairs, washing towels and humming the Alleluia. Random acts of kindness were many: Lynne Mapes-Riordan and the Liturgy Committee for careful planning and execution of the liturgies; Donna Lee Floeter and the creative Art & Environ-ment group for the daily decorating and changing of the environment beginning with Palm Sunday in two worship spaces and outdoors, flower arrang-ing, ironing, hanging material, setting the stage; Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Altar Servers, Greeters, Ushers, Sacristans, Bread Bakers; Fire preparers, Foot washers and dryers, water and tow-el brigade, candle preparers, sound system set up twice in one week; liturgical folkloric dancers and banner wavers, prayer leaders; Ace Gangoso and the angelic choirs, cantors and musicians; Drama presenters of the Passion twice on Palm Sunday and at the outdoor Way of the Cross on Good Fri-day; The parish office staff for many extra hours of administrative support with Ordos, copies, lists, etc.; Our maintenance crew who were present when we needed them and when we did not even notice them; After Vigil midnight soiree: decora-tors, set up, food preparers and donors, shoppers, and clean up; So many of you who saw what need-ed to be done and quietly did it: door holding, helping with young children and the elderly, toilet unclogging, floor dryers, welcoming new people, chair set up and break down, sweeping, gathering books, car parkers, SMILING!

The list of names would fill this bulletin, and sorry if I missed any tasks not listed above. You are all most generous and joyful in your service to our community and our visitors especially during this Holy Week. I am humbled by your care, concern and generosity in making our celebrations spiritual-ly potent and meaningful. Today, the Octave and Second Sunday of Easter, we read the appearance of Jesus to the disciples that same night as they had locked themselves in a room for fear of their lives. They saw what happened to Jesus and were afraid the same may happen to them. So Jesus brings Peace to shake off their fear and open their hearts. “…he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.’” We see this giving of the Holy Spirit for the ministry of Mercy. This Divine Mercy Sunday is a moment for us to bathe in the tender mercy of God. Mercy is displayed as the for-giveness of sin and lead us to act merciful like God. The Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy flow from forgiveness of the Passion, Death and Resur-rection of Christ which we have celebrated in the Triduum. How appropriate it is then, that this Sun-day the church offers us a feast of the Divine Mercy as a full living out of the Resurrection event. As Pope Francis wrote “Mercy is the very foundation of the Church’s life. All of Her pastoral activity should be caught up in the tenderness she makes present to believers.” Jesus, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

We had a very successful action on March 11 with over 1200 residents from Cook, Lake, DuPage and Kane counties who packed Maine East High School to hear how the 10 candidates for Attorney General would respond to our concerns. We now know we have an ally in whoever is elected Attorney General in November and we look forward to continued support from those not on the November ballot. The next United Power meeting is Thursday April 12, 7:00 – 9:00 pm. This meeting will be a training ses-sion on how to conduct one-to-one meetings with members of our community. One-to-one meetings are a method for grass roots organizations to hone in on the interests of members of our community. Please join us for this important meeting as we continue to build a broader base of support and membership here at St. Nick’s. Please RSVP to Damian Barta at [email protected] or Yvonne Smith at [email protected].
